6. System block diagram
OS-214/314:
The printer consists of:
Mainboard:A four-layer PCBA, consisting of a micro-controller, memory and EPROMs (componentsrequired for printing functions).
Panel board:A one-layer PCBA, consisting of a push button switch and two LED indicators for useraccess, power and error indication.
Ribbon sensor:A one-layer PCBA, consisting of a reflective object sensor which is designated for ribbonsensing.
-
Paper sensorA one-layer PCBA, which consists of a reflective object sensor designated for paper/gapsensing.
Thermal print head (TPH)The OS-214 has 832 heat elements designed for the TPH of OS-214. The OS-314 has 1248heat elements. Each heat element can be driven individually.
Motor:A bipolar stepping motor is used for carrying the label and ribbon during printing.
Peeler (option) A mechanism that is designated for the automatic separation of the label and backing.
Peeler sensor (option)A one-layer PCBA, which consists of a reflective object sensor, designated to detect whetherthe printed label is removed or still existent.
Cutter assembly (option)A mechanism, which consists of a DC motor, a switch, some gears and a rotary cutter. It isused for cutting the printed label automatically.
Power adapter:The power adapter converts the input voltage (120VAC or 230VAC) to 19VAC. A 4-Amp fuse isalso included in the adapter for over current protection.
Controller:Equipment that can send the printing command to the printer through the RS-232 serial port or theCentronics parallel port. Normally it is a PC.

7. Mainboard block diagram and descriptions
-
1. Micro-controller (U6)A HITACHI 16 bit micro-controller is used with this printer. The micro-controllersmany onboard features such as integrated timer, DMA controller, A/D convert, serialcommunication interface, pattern generator and I/O ports ensure the printer is of highperformance and compact in size.
2. Flash memory (U8, U9)There are two 256KB flash memory chips on the mainboard to store the program, fontsand barcodes.
3. DRAM (U10)In OS-214, a 4MB DRAM is used as the medium of storage for the printing images. InOS-314, a 16MB DRAM is used. In order to have fast access to memory, a 16-bit widedata bus is installed.
4. EEPROM (U7)Some parameters are stored in EEPROM for printing, communication and specialcontrols.
5. TPH driver (U1, U2)Through these drivers, the control and data signals are fed to the TPH for image printing.
6. Motor driver (U16, U17)In order to have enough torque and speed, two motor drivers are used on the mainboard, each one drives one phase of the bipolar stepper motor.
7. RS-232 driver/receiver (U4)To convert the serial port signal to/from the micro-controller to RS-232 voltage level, anRS-232 driver/receiver with integral charge pump circuit is used.
8. CENTRONICS driver (U11, U13)
9. Rectifier (D1)To convert the input 19VAC from power adapter to 24VDC.
-
10. DC/DC converter (U20, L1, D2)To convert the 24V output from rectifier to 5V, to be used as the power supply formicro-controller, Flash memory, or DRAM.
11. Relay (RY2)1) RY2 disconnects the power supply (24V) from the TPH when the printer is turned on
to prevent the TPH from being burnt by electric current.2) RY2 has to be activated before printing.
12. Power switch (SW1)
To switch on or off the power supply from the power adapter.
8. Communication specifications

9. Calibration:
Under the following conditions the paper sensor should be calibrated:1). After replacing the mainboard, paper sensor board or print mechanism.2). The label gap can not be detected properly.
9.1 Calibration Procedure:
1. Turn off the printer and open the top cover.2. Remove the TPH module and clean the paper sensor with cotton cloth dampened with
alcohol.3. Replace the TPH and close the printer.
4. Press and hold the FEED button on the front panel.5. Turn on the printer.6. After the motor starts rotating, release the FEED button.7. Print a test file.
-
10. Clearance
The following components need to be cleaned regularly:
10.1 Thermal print head:
Thermal paper or ribbon debris will degrade printing quality, thus the thermal print headshould be cleaned with a cotton swab or a cloth dampened with methanol. Do not touch theheat elements with bare hands while cleaning.
10.2 Platen roller:
Debris or dirt on the roller should be cleaned with alcohol.
10.3 Paper sensor:
Dirt on the paper sensor will cause erroneous or unstable detection of the label gap. Clean thepaper sensor with alcohol regularly.
Caution: Switch off the power before cleaning.
-
11. Trouble shooting and Maintenance:
11.1 Error indication:
LED action DescriptionPOWER and READY LEDs both ON OS-214TT is ready for printingPOWER and READY LEDs blinksimultaneously
One of following conditions may occur Out of label Label gap detection problem Label stuck or jammed Paper sensor problem
POWER and READY LEDs blinkalternatively
One of following conditions may occur Out of ribbon Ribbon stuck or jammed Ribbon sensor problem
POWER LED blinks One of following conditions may occur Power voltage is too high TPH temperature is too high Memory overflow Mainboard out of work
POWER and READY LEDs both OFF One of following conditions may occur No power supply Power adapter fuse broken Mainboard out of work Panel board out of work
-
11.2 Trouble shooting:
POWER and READY LEDs blink simultaneously:
-
POWER and READY LEDs blink alternatively:
-
POWER LED blinks:
There are two main reasons for this error indication:1. An inconsistency of speed and protocol between the host and the printer in serial
communication.2. Memory full
POWER and READY LEDs both OFF:
-
11.3 To resume the printer after error:
Press the FEED buttonor
Reset the printer by turning the power off, then turning it on again.
Note: Because the printers power capacitor is big, it reflects power consumption slowly. Therefore, wait five seconds (until both LEDs go off) before turning on the power again.
-
11.4 Power adapter fuse replacement:
1) Remove the four screws from the bottom of the power adapter.2) Remove the top cover.3) Replace the 4-amp fuse.4) Replace the cover and screws.
)86(
-
11.5 TPH (thermal print head) replacement
1. Switch off the power and wait for both LEDs to go off.2. Open the top cover.3. Unlatch the print head module and swing it to the opposite.4. Remove the ribbon.5. Push the TPH firmly into the mounting bracket (see figure 11.5.1) then slide it to the left to
release it from the module (see figure 11.5.2).6. Disconnect the TPH cable.7. Disassemble the TPH and the metal plate by removing the screws.8. Replace the TPH.
