chad driskellChair

It has been an honor to serve as Chairman of the Area Development Partnership in 2019. I am proud of the successes and accomplishments this year has brought the ADP and Greater Hattiesburg. We have hosted a plethora of successful events such as the Kohler Engines announcement, HUBFEST, Corporate Golf Challenge, and Leadership Exchange, and I am grateful to have had a front row seat to all of them. I have enjoyed getting to know the ADP staff, board of directors, and members of this talented organization over the course of this year. Thank you all for your partnership, membership, and making our community stronger and enhancing the quality of life in Greater Hattiesburg. I am confident the ADP will continue to build and strengthen this community for several years to come.

As John Maxwell says, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” Leadership is a differentiating factor between mediocre organizations and thriving organizations. As leaders, we often try to move people down a path that they never considered embarking upon. Leaders understand the importance of vision, mission, culture, strategy, and execution. Leaders know the importance of hiring right-fit talent, providing proper training, and enabling staff to grow and prosper. Everything that we do at the ADP revolves around our mission of enhancing the quality of life through economic progress.

We want our members to grow personally so that they can flourish professionally. Leadership is learned and developed over time as individuals take risks, understand their “why,” and then move forward passionately pursuing their goals, dreams, and aspirations. At the ADP, we believe in our mission and have an unrelenting desire to see this community get better and stronger and to see lives changed as people have opportunities to gain new skills, newfound confidence, and a belief that great things lie ahead. It’s not a false panacea, but rather a daily drive that is, for me, a faith-based grit. We expect great things to occur and when obstacles arise and failures come, we dust each other off, lift one another up, and move forward together. That’s how we continue to move the needle here in the Burg.

As you can tell, this issue of The Navigator revolves around leadership! You’ll read about Leadership Pinebelt, Pine Belt Young Professionals, and our upcoming 2019 ADP Annual Meeting that always centers on leadership. Carey Nieuwhof, a gifted pastor and leadership guru based north of Toronto, will keynote our Annual Meeting. I read Carey’s blogs often, and they offer leadership nuggets that are so pertinent to our daily lives. I recently finished Carey’s book entitled Didn’t See it Coming: Overcoming the 7 Greatest Challenges That No One Expects and Everyone Experiences. Carey will deliver a thoughtful, challenging, and freeing message December 6th that will help elevate you and your business.

Our team is always available for you. Consider us a major resource and get involved to make the most of your membership. If you’re reading this, you’re a member of our team; so, you’ve taken the first step and now a crucial second step is needed. Jump in, get involved, find your place, and I promise that you’ll experience personal fulfillment and professional growth. Thanks for walking alongside us as we stretch the community to compete and win.

Each year the ADP celebrates the region’s achievements in and celebrates its leadership at the annual meeting, the organization’s highly anticipated end-of-the-year event held annually in December at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Thad Cochran Center. The Annual Meeting has featured national keynote speakers such as bestselling authors and leadership coaches Jon Gordon and John O’Leary, and executive search consultant and author Bob Beaudine, each of whom shared messages with a common thread – leadership. At our region’s core, the ultimate catalyst for growth is the ability to identify, engage and groom talent, and as part of our role to strengthen the power of business in Greater Hattiesburg, the ADP creates opportunities and provides resources to help members grow both personally and professionally.

Since enhancing the format of the Annual Meeting in 2014, this signature event has become a platform for broad, high-level professional development training that our members can incorporate into business plans, daily operations, and leadership development strategies. Although a significant portion of the program is spent recapping the year’s successes and electing new officers and board members, the overarching goal of the Annual Meeting is to help groom talent and hone the leadership skills of community leaders. Now more than ever, Chambers of Commerce have the charge of developing dynamic leaders as a strategy to spur economic activity and encouraging entrepreneurship for opportunities in business innovation, redevelopment, and expansion. Our vision at the ADP is to cultivate leaders who will become innovators and change agents – thus collectively building a framework for sustainable business growth and success for the community.

This year’s keynote speaker, Carey Nieuwhof, teaching and founding pastor of Connexus Church in Barrie, Ontario (just outside of Toronto), has been serving in ministry since 1995 and is the author of several books, including his latest, Didn’t See It Coming: Overcoming the 7 Greatest Challenges That No One Expects and Everyone Experiences. Today, Carey speaks to church and business leaders around the world about leadership, change, and personal growth. He writes one of today’s most widely read leadership blogs and hosts the top-rated Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast where he interviews some of today’s best leaders. Didn’t See It Coming illustrates life’s curveballs and how everyone has to deal with them as well as how we can overcome them. Through personal knowledge and biblical wisdom, Nieuwhof teaches readers how to reverse these significant challenges by closing the gap between who you are and who you’ve always longed to be and provides practical steps to get (and stay) ahead.

5 Ways to Increase Online Exposure – Without Paying!

chamber chatterAn exposure venue that’s here to stay: social media. These days, it has the potential to be incredibly lucrative and helpful to your business, if you have a proper social media strategy in place. Our most recent Rise Up Professional Development Series included insight on best practices and tools for taking full advantage of online media and connecting fully with your audience and customers. Our team has compiled a list of our top 5 tips for utilizing social media for maximum exposure - without paying social media avenues for promotions.

1Use the Right Keywords. Social pages like Facebook have great potential to increase your visibility, if used correctly. However, because of the algorithm designed to allow users to see their most relevant content, your post could be hidden if it appears “too ad heavy.” Avoid words such as “free,” “sale,” “like,” and “share” in your posts. However, using a word like “anniversary” or “big news” has been proven to get a little more traffic. Try to stay authentic instead of sounding like an ad, and your post will be more widely received.

5Hot Deals. On top of sharing your promotions on social media - share them with us! If you’re offering a deal, log in to your member account and click the “Hot Deals” section of your home page. This allows you to customize your deal with graphics and information. Once you submit your deal, it will be featured in our weekly e-blast, The Rundown, that goes out to all of our member business representatives (over 2,500 emails!) each Tuesday afternoon. Happy posting!

4Stay Consistent. A big part of creating an effective social media strategy is creating a consistent social media posting schedule. Sticking to a schedule is important in maintaining your brand. Use helper hashtags like “#MotivationalMonday” or “#ThrowbackThursday” to aid in this.

2Tag Us in Posts. A great way to utilize the ADP in your social media strategy is by tagging us in your posts. By following and tagging all of our social media pages, we can see and share your events, sales, and promotions. We love to support our members through interacting on social media!

3Engage with Your Audience. A great way to build an audience is to engage with them. Replying to comments, positive or negative, and answering direct messages as soon as possible is imperative in gaining and retaining customers. People appreciate great customer service, and that includes social media.

LEADERSHIP EXCHANGENew Orleans, LAThe ADP hosted its annual Leadership Exchange September 25th-27th in New Orleans, LA. The purpose of the visit was to exchange ideas and success stories in the areas of business innovation, commercial redevelopment through public-private partnerships, leadership development, healthcare talent attraction, and workforce training. As one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas for millennials, Greater New Orleans offers exceptional schools, a cost of living comparable to the national average, and is home to numerous economic drivers such as Ochsner Health System, Tulane University, Port of New Orleans, Audubon Nature Institute, and pro sports franchises including the New Orleans Saints.

Homes.com named New Orleans the “#6 Most “Family-Friendly” Major City in America. Numerous other sources like online magazine OZY, real estate firm CBRE, and SmartAsset listed New Orleans high on their rankings of “Rising Tech Hub,” “Top 10 Tech Market to Watch,” and “#3 for Women in Tech.” Greater New Orleans boasts a population of almost 1.3M residents and has an average household income of $72,042. In the past decade, Greater New Orleans, Inc. has announced $30B in capital investment and the creation of over 16,000 jobs. In 2018, Global Trade magazine ranked the Port of New Orleans #4 on their “Top 50 Power Ports” in America.

As part of the ADP’s efforts to cross-promote programs and provide a platform for members to foster relationships that will impact their personal and professional growth, the organization hosted its annual Big Night Out event with Pinebelt Young Professionals (PBYP) along with current and former class members of Leadership Pinebelt (LEADERS). The two groups are similar in that both have missions to identify emerging leaders in the region and groom them for future leadership opportunities. Additionally, to participate in both PBYP and LEADERS, one must be between the ages of 21-45, and live or work in Greater Hattiesburg (Forrest, Lamar and Perry counties). The lifeblood of any community is identifying and grooming talent, and through these programs we’re developing a strong pipeline of community leaders who will serve and lead for years to come.
