Community Manager’s Corner: Jamie HarperPicking up after your pets? Many of us have those special four-legged family members that require a walk around the community frequently. Although we all love our special family members, we must also remember to pick up after them. Some may have noticed a few “surprises” throughout the community that our four legged friends have left behind. Please be courteous to your neighbors, and make sure that your special family member isn’t leaving their own gifts behind. Not picking up after your pets is a violation of the rules of Ardiente, and can result in a fine. If you have any questions you can always contact the Onsite office at 702-643-0226. EmailsPlease be advised: RMI Management, LLC on behalf of the Ardiente HOA will periodically send out blast emails to all Ardiente  Residents, owners and tenants.  If you are not currently  receiving these emails it is most likely  because RMI does not have your email  address on file. January 11th at 5.30pm – Happy HourJust a note to be aware! The second Friday of every month is our monthly Happy Hour. As in the past this event is truly “happy”, and will continue this year. It provides a great time to share some great hors oeuvres and various libations. It also affords residents the opportunity to meet all the “newbies”, and even the “oldies” in our community. There is always a (to some people “annoying”) trivia game which finishes with lots of laughter.

January 12th : Railroad Tunnels Trail HikeThis pleasant 4.4-mile walk (round trip) follows an old railroad bed through five 300-foot-long, 25-ft-diameter tunnels cut through volcanic ridges high above Lake Mead. The "railroad tunnels" part of the hike starts near the Visitor Center and runs east to just beyond the fifth tunnel, which runs, literally, underneath the Lakeview Scenic Overlook, but it does not actually connect to the Overlook. The trail now extends from there all the way to Hoover Dam, adding another 3 miles to the round-trip hike. We will stop for lunch at Boulder Brewery in Boulder City.

Wednesday, January 9th Inquiry Club meeting We will be meeting in the Clubhouse here at Ardiente at 7:00 pm. Several of us will be meeting at 5:30 pm at the PT's Restaurant on Centennial Parkway west of Losee Road for dinner and conversation before going to the meeting. The topic will be, "Red Flag," a video on the annual exercise at Nellis AFB. A guest, Bernie Zager who retired from the base and is very familiar with the "Red Flag" activities will tell us about the events and help explain what occurs. The presentation is being put on by Jack Klag. Ice cream and cake will be provided after the meeting.

Please join us for dinner (at the restaurant) and for the presentation. All men who reside or own homes here in Ardiente are invited. If you need further information you can call the President Alan Welch at 478-6249 or Vice President Ray Stokes at 655-1270.

Martin Luther King, Jr. DayFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia  Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the

birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday

of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15.

The floating holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday

Holiday Act, though the act predated the establishment of Martin Luther King,

Jr. Day by 15 years.

King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights

movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and

state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon

after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in

1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. At first, some states

resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or

combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for

the first time in 2000.

Meet your Neighbors: Kevin & Ileene Shanahan

Ileene and Kevin Shanahan have lived on Inverness Grove now for two months. They came to see Ardientealmost by accident, as they had been looking to buy in Aliante!

Kevin Patrick Shanahan (yes, he is of Irish descent!) grew up just outside of Boston, the middle child of seven. He went into the Air Force right out of high school where he spent the next 22 years at bases all over the U.S. and Europe, but spent his Air Force career working with explosives and munitions.

When he had been in the military about 4 years, he met a lovely young woman who worked just down the hall from him. That was Ileene, and they have been married now for 33 years! Ileene was an only child who grew up in a tiny town in Delaware. She first worked for the government as a secretary, then attended college to study biology. After graduating at age 40 she worked in science and R & D.

Kevin and Ileene really enjoyed the lifestyle and the travel the military afforded them. They have lived in Turkey and Italy (near Pisa), and in the US in Tucson, Delaware, Massachusetts, and even formerly in Las Vegas. They were living in New Jersey until last summer.

After they retired, the Shanahans visited Ireland where Kevin became intensely interested in geneology and finding out more about his grandparents, who emigrated in 1913. He visited the Joyce House in Dublin where many records are kept.

Kevin loves planes, and is a civilian pilot. He also loves gadgets, short wave radio, and anything electronic. He resisted computers for many years until he was “dragged, kicking and screaming by his boss in the military” into the hi tech world, and now is thoroughly addicted to computers. He is still looking to continue working if he can find an interesting job in logistics.

Ileene has been having fun in the Baking Club, has attended the Ladies Lunch, and exercised with Zumba and Aquasize. She loves to cruise and to take care of animals and plants. She also may work if something comes along that piques her interest, but in the meantime she is enjoying not working.

Welcome to Ardiente!

DECEMBER 2012 LADIES LUNCH

Here’s a riddle for you: How many Ardiente ladies can you fit into the Bellagio Café for lunch? Answer: 30 lovely ladies having a very festive lunch. That’s what happened for the last Ladies Lunch of the year.

What a great turn out, and what a wonderful time was had by all! The day included admiring the beautiful decorations at the Bellagio Conservatory, and even Christmas “favors” on the luncheon tables for each attendee (nicely made by Diana Eden -- big thank you). From the conversations and the clinking of the forks on the plate it was a happy celebration of the season. Especially nice was the inclusion of several of our very newest residents.

With the unusually large attendance for our holiday lunch, we were unable to get separate checks, so apologies to anyone who felt they paid more than their fair share. We are working on a system to avoid this in the future.

Hike December 8th

Once again, blessed with sunny skies and mild temperatures, 18 Ardiente Hiking Enthusiasts (A.C.H.E) set off to explore the Las Vegas Wetlands Park, where we had heard there were over 200 species of birds and other wildlife to be seen. The Wetlands Park trails in the 2,900 acre park are mostly concrete pathways, with side paths of gravel. Along the way we saw rapids, ponds, and rivers, in which resided all manner of birds, ducks, herons and egrets. Paul Oldale, an experienced birder, was able to identify the species and gender of birds so tiny and far away they were barely visible to the rest of us! We spotted five turtles sunbathing on a couple of rocks, which we were told were red-eared turtles. Who knew turtles had ears! Designed by Carl Herrman

Hike December16th

Even though only a few hikers (6) braved the chilly morning temperatures for the Red Rock Canyon hike  on Sunday it was a beautiful hike.. A dusting of snow on the mountains and  clear blue skies added to the  beautiful scenery and sunshine warming  the temperatures  made for an enjoyable hike.  Dale's Trail, a scenic and colorful trail follows the escarpment along the base of Bridge and Rainbow Mountains meandering thru Manzanita, Pinyon & Ponderosa Pines. After losing the trail a few times we did make it almost to the end before turning back and heading to the "Three Angry Wives" in Boca Park for lunch.

TRAVEL NEWS

One of the purposes of our monthly feature “Travel News” is to share with the community at large the adventures and experiences of our fellow travelers to all parts of the globe. One of our most intrepid voyagers is Ginny Sprinkle, to whom a 25 hour plane flight is worth it if a new experience awaits at the other end! She traveled with her sister, daughter, and friends.

These six brave and hardy souls went to the Cambodia to explore the fascinating ancient temples and climb through tropical jungles so they can ultimately have their spa massages and marathon shopping in local markets for silk scarves, purses, silver jewelry, and local relics.

Cambodia is a land of color. The green of lush trees and plants covers endless miles of flat land, small farms, and jungle. The rest of the colors are saved for the flowers and the people. Locals wear a mix of every color of the rainbow in the clothes and head covers. There are no rules; everything is worn together, like bright checkered or striped head covers with flowered print or plaid skirts. Anything and everything goes!

The population of Phnom Penh is 2.5 million people. There is no public bus system in this city -- only tuk-tuks or motorcycles with passenger space. All these are decorated individually. We see absolutely no “stop signs”. There are also very few signal lights, yet everyone seems to get where they are going. Sometimes we travel by “cyclo” - a bicycle driven carriage. Each of us picks our vehicle and the men, who are half our weight, navigate the heavy traffic, stay in a line, and get us to our destination without mishap. Scratch that one off our “bucket list”.

Our city tour includes a drive past the famous French designed Independence Monument, built in 1958 to commemorate Cambodia’s war dead and celebrate independence from foreign rule. We visit Psar Thmei, the central market, an Art Deco masterpiece built in 1927 and spend an hour shopping. Other stops are to the somber Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the Chatomuk Mongkul, (Royal Palace), The Silver Pagoda, the National Museum. The late afternoon is spent cruising on the Mekong River where we see many boat families, traditional stilt homes, a few multi million dollar homes owned by rich Cambodians, and marketplaces, where we uphold our sacred duty to support the local economy and we buy, buy, BUY!

Travel News, continued

Alas, the six hours of driving to Siem Reap on a bumpy road is not a full day, so we are off to see the floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake. We sail past all sorts of water craft, floating boat markets, restaurants, and schools on stilts. Many of the people live without electricity, or provide it for short periods of time from a car battery.

There are an estimated 1080 temples in the country with 40 active temples in the vicinity of Siem Reap. We begin our next day with a visit to the magnificent Angkor Thom. We are overcome by the size and scope of this first temple. This giant temple is surrounded by a wide moat, part of the continuous network of canals that run throughout the Angkor Wat area, which are necessary to preserve the temples, which built on sand foundations. We visit Preah Khan, whhih has been left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing amont the ruins.

After lunch we visit the famous Ankhor Wat, a Hindu temple that faces west. It is composed of five temples 65 meters high, three levels and three libraries, and 4 pools which symbolize the Ganges River. Next day we visited the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed and gladly pose for a photo with the famous tree.

We came to Cambodia to learn about the place and thepeople. Thanks to our warmhearted guides and drivers we saw so many interesting things in seven days. The people here are survivors. They are a beautiful people; while small in stature they are big in spirit.

ARDIENTE COOKIE EXCHANGE!

On December 12th ten of Ardiente’s residents gathered at the club house to exchange 3 dozen cookies each. The affair was put together by Thyra Zager as a Baking Club Event.. There were several kinds of hot chocolate and wine and we all brought extra cookies to snack on. All of us bakers enjoyed eating cookies and having great conversations.

This year the Adopt a Family program was organized by the Veterans Club and the Veterans Auxiliary Club. We adopted the Williams family from Nellis AFB. TSgt Shantay Williams recently returned from deployment to Kuwait. While away her husband took care of the house and their six children – Christaleah, age 3, Christopher, age 4, Christierra, age 10, Tiara, age 11, Christamari, age 13, and Christianna, age 16. They were most appreciative of what the community did for them. There will be a potluck lunch to meet the family on Saturday, Jan 5, at 11:30am.

TSgt Williams said, “God bless you all! I cannot thank you all enough for the joy that you keep giving us. We are so thankful for all that you have done for our family. I'm filled with tears of joy!! God is an awesome God and I pray that he will bless you and your community tenfold!! God knows it has been a struggle for us this year. Every time we get one step ahead there is something else that brings us back down. I just prayed for us to have peace and joy in the midst of our struggle. We now not only have peace about the van and gifts being under the tree for the kids but joy in knowing that he answers prays and that there are still wonderful, caring people in the world to lend a helping hand. Thank you soooo much!! With love and thanks, Chris and Shantay Williams”

The Adopt a Family Program

Each child received five gifts from generous folks in the community and the monetary donations were used for gifts to both Chris and Shantay, get repair work on their van and to help buy their Christmas dinner. And it was not only the Community that helped—while Purrfect Auto was fixing their oil leak they noticed the water pump was bad; they replaced the water pump free of charge. What a great world we live in!

HOLIDAY POTLUCK PARTY!

ARDIENTE HOLIDAY POTLUCK

How do you celebrate the holidays in the “desert climate” of Las Vegas? With chilly weather that clarifies the fact Santa can come to Las Vegas in a sleigh. The weather cooperated on Saturday December 22nd and put the attendees in the mood to celebrate.

What a great turn out for our Holiday Potluck! We had 60 Ardiente residents, and tons of delicious potluck dishes which ran from healthy veggies, turkey and stuffing, casseroles to over-the-top decadent desserts. If you asked the attendees you can be assured they would roundly applaud the Ardiente potlucks as scrumptious!

The evening also included a 20 question game to get to know your neighbors (provided by the wonderful ladies of the Nimblefingers Club). The questions were all holiday oriented, i.e.: “find someone who has seen a reindeer” and only one guest’s name for each question was accepted. The winner was Wrenn Malecki!

The winners of the house decorating party were announced, and it was Marcus Warner and Ray Stokes! Runners up were the Ernst Residence, and the Calandra Home.

The evening was concluded with a rounding rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas led by Marty Puzio and Jo Ann Ernst. Much laughter ensued and made the evening perfect for fun, food and good friends.

ARDIENTE LIBRARY CORNER

The Mitford Series

By

Jan Karon

Reviewed by Nancy Tradup

It all started when I borrowed the book “At Home in Mitford” from our library. I enjoyed the book and it’s characters so well, I went on line and purchased the rest of the set of 10 books used from Amazon.com. The whole series is now in our Ardiente Library for all who wish to enjoy. Thank you to who ever donated the book to our library.

“Come away to Mitford, the small town that takes care of its own. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Mitford is a crazy quilt of saints and sinners, lovable eccentrics all. Seen through the eyes of Father Tim, the long-suffering village rector, Mitford abounds in mysteries and miracles, compelling readers to return again and again to this beloved series.”

Father Tim is an Episcopal minister and through out the books he quotes scripture. I found the books enlightening as well as funny and truly enjoyable because of the many different characters. After I read each book I couldn’t wait to read the next. (If you are not a religious person you may not like the religious part of these books.)
