Next Technical Meeting:

TUNNEL LIGHTING Determinant factors in the access zone Presenter: Patrick Rident-Tiercelet Date: 18th of September 2012 Location: AIA – 70 Merivale Street

South Brisbane Time: 12:00pm – 12:30pm

RSVP: IES QLD Chapter by September 14th [email protected] Abstract: There has been an increased number of tunnels being built in Australia over the last decade and now in Brisbane. This has generated a lot of interest for Tunnel lighting and Patrick has participated in several projects mostly in Sydney but also in Brisbane, he was also involved in the preparation the Tunnel Standard released in 2007. Tunnel lighting is based on the concept that you need more lighting during the day than at night to avoid the “black hole effect” at the entrance of the tunnel. Whistle luminance adaptation is the main reason there are a few other factors in the access zone of the tunnel which will determine how much light is needed at the entrance of the tunnel.  President’s Message The Olympic Games is always a great display of lighting effects and I always look forward to see the creative ideas of the lighting designers. This year was particularly challenging for a project of this scale because the designers had to address the issue of sustainability. They minimised the use of incandescent lamps and used LED wherever they could. All awards program are well on their way and will be finalised at the end of this month. The annual dinner is next month, it’s looking very good again this year and you will find an announcement from Darrin Schreier in this newsletter. Note that we postponed the Parklight until next year and we are now looking for expression of interest for the “Made in Queensland” meeting in October, there is an announcement from Glen Stevens in this issue. I will be talking about Tunnel Lighting at the next technical meeting. I was interested to talk about access zone luminance because in most tunnel lighting design projects it is usually given in the specification, I mean the threshold zone luminance value. This is not always an easy number to determine due to the variable factors that I will be talking about. Please come and listen to my talk on the 18th of September. Patrick Rident-Tiercelet IES QLD Chapter President

Student Lighting Design Competition 2012 CLIENT LIGHTING BRIEF

The Queensland Chapter of the IESANZ (Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand) would like to invite students to submit a creative lighting design for Wonderland in the Children’s Hospital. This is an opportunity for students to exhibit creative flair and experience the appeal of the lighting design industry. The brief provides guidance to the lighting designer in regards to the client’s expectations and criteria to Wonderland. It is not a lighting design, but is a brief to enable students to produce a design worthy for the hospital’s children to play within the spaces for the Play Areas (Computer and Craft Areas), Theatre / Stage Area and the Teenage Retreat. Students are to refer to both the floor plan and ceiling plan for their designs.

All of the areas in Wonderland are suitable for both day and night play time for the Hospital Children and Visitors. All perimeter windows have black curtains to allow for nil sunlight during stage performances during both the day and night. The theatre stage is small and is raised 100mm from the finished floor level. The stage is manufactured from a donated recycled timber stage. The Hospital has organised regular stage performances for the Sick Children such as ‘The Wiggles’ and Humphrey Bear. The following areas are covered in the brief to help with the students to design.

Combined Play Areas The entry in the combined play area has a double door entrance. The double doors are covered in a very shiny aluminium smooth finish that allows for reflected light. All wall surfaces within the Play Areas are dark blue and the ceiling is near white. There is a bulkhead shown on the ceiling plans to allow for a difference in ceiling height (refer to the ceiling drawing). The large column near the door entry is an opportunity to create around or bring into play with the design.

As you enter on the right side is a wall that has computer games built into the wall. These are placed close to the floor for the Children to sit on their cushions and play computer games. The lighting for the game area requires to be low ambience and have nil glare allowing clear visibility around the computer screens.

The craft area has child height tables and chairs (stackable) that can allow flexibility to moving around to suit the group activities. The Lighting brief in this area requires the lighting to be suitable for task lighting to play and make craft.

IESANZ – QLD CHAPTER Page 4 of 16

Theatre and stage area Theatre and stage area allows for creative lighting and opportunity for students to design a stage area in a very small compact area. The back wall is covered in black fabric and is free of any imagery.

Teenage Retreat Teenage Retreat has fantastic photographic imagery covering all the walls. The image is a city back street alley with art graffiti from floor to ceiling, all in dark colours and dark brick work on the alley street buildings. It is a great space for the Teenagers to escape and play. A large red sofa is placed on the back wall and many bean bags scattered around the curved wall. A video screen is placed high on the column near the windows.

Competition Submission The competition submission will consist of the students presenting their conceptual ideas of a lighting design onto the selected spaces. You will be able to present their ideas across a number of platforms; from hand sketches, digital mark-ups, word content and other multi-media applications. Students who submit for Stage 1 will have the benefit of their design being reviewed by industry renowned lighting designers, who will provide feedback on entrants lighting designs. This will allow the entrant to use the judges’ comments to help refine their final submission for the final Stage 2 competition deadline.

Eligibility All tertiary students enrolled in a Queensland tertiary program are eligible to enter – it is not necessary that the course covers a component of lighting. Prizes

But we still do. The QLD chapter of the IES are giving our current corporate members the opportunity of presenting to our members an overview on their manufacturing processes in Queensland. This is NOT a product presentation, this is opportunity to highlight and present any key production procedures or processes involved in your manufacturing facility in Queensland. Some key features of a product come from such manufacturing processes. If you are interested in presenting to our members please contact Glen Stevens on 0403 249634 for more discussions Expressions of interest close September Friday 14th 5pm.

2012 Annual Dinner Announcement The IESANZ Queensland Chapter are proud to announce that 3S Lighting are Platinum Sponsors and Clevertronics, GM Poles,, Lumen 8, LSI Hamilton Lighting, Sylvania Lighting, Pierlite and Eagle Lighting are Gold Sponsors for the 2012 Annual Dinner. There are plenty of sponsorship opportunities available, don’t miss out on what will surely be the biggest Annual Dinner in Queensland IESANZ history. For Sponsorship opportunities contact Darrin Schreier at [email protected] or 3173 8558 Lighting History The Seagram Building, Richard Kelly, 1957

Richard Kelly’s lighting design for the Seagram Building required a balance of interior and exterior brightness. Kelly knew that to make the lobby visible from the outside the interior building core had to glow. A perimeter lighting system was developed which washed the light stone walls, accentuating their height. On both sides of the window wall and under the entrance canopy, Kelly located rows of down lights which set the building in a pool of light and allowed the eye to visually penetrate the glass. In the offices a luminous ceiling forms a continuous band around the buildings glass walled perimeter. Kelly specified warm white fluorescent lamps to match the colour qualities of the incandescent lamps used in the lobby. The system uses two circuits so that the night lighting could be set at one quarter of the output of the daytime lighting. Kelly summarized hi powerful lighting concept for the Seagram Building as, “a tower of light, but the lobby predominates”. Reference: Richard Kelly Selected Works IESNY 1993

The Anglepoise Lamp – George Carwardien, 1932

The Angle poise lamp is a balanced-arm lamp designed in 1932 by British designer George Carwardine. Carwardine was a car designer and was, at the time he invented the Angle poise lamp, a freelance design consultant specializing in vehicle suspension systems. While developing new concepts for vehicle suspensions, he created a mechanism which he recognized had applications in other fields. He particularly saw its benefits for a task lamp. Despite many claims to the contrary, his concept had nothing whatsoever to do with mimicking the actions of the human arm. The joints and spring tension allow the lamp to be moved into a wide range of positions which it will maintain without being clamped. Carwardine applied for a patent, number 404,615, for a lamp design using the mechanism on 4 July 1932, and manufactured the lamp himself in the workshops of his own company, Cardine Accessories, in Bath, England. He soon found the interest and demand so great that he needed a major expansion or partner and, on 22 February 1934, entered into a licensing agreement with the Terry Spring Company in Redditch, England. Terry's manufactured and marketed the lamp, while Carwardine continued to develop the concept, producing a number of other versions and applications (for example, for supporting microphones). The original four-spring design was made for working environments, such as workshops and doctors' and dentists' surgeries, but he also designed a three-spring version for use in the home (patented on 10 February 1934, patent number 433,617). A key feature of the Angle poise design and patent is the placement of all springs (either three or four) near the base. The design was extensively copied by other companies, usually in simplified form, and is still in use. Some derivatives use a heavy balance weight instead of the springs. The most common version replaces the arm linkages with two independent parallelogram linkages, with a pair of light tension springs on each half of the arm. The arm has been employed in other devices where it is necessary to hold an object stationary at a convenient point in space, notably the copy holder for typists and in some applications, the computer display screen.

George Carwardine was born in 1887 and died in 1947, at the age of 60.
