supplement the water needs of her children's two young calves. They collect rainwater off the calves' shed in a 50 gallon barrel. They fill itwith well water when they are not expecting rain and use a float valve tokeep the water tank at a constant level. They use a foam gutter insertas a filter. Eventually, they will add a larger barrel, and may extend theirshed area to allow for more catchment surface area. It's great to seerainwater catchment being used in this capacity!
Ocean Beach Women's Club RWH Design
ARCSA Member, Greg Chick, describes his latest RWH project at theOcean Beach Women's Club: Rainwater catchment system, one 300 gallontank, just under 1,000 sq. ft. roof area. Fogdew, will be captured, as well as rainfall that isabout 10" per yr. Only one side of the roof willbe guttered, as visible in picture, a leaf eaterand over flow are installed. The tank was seton a raised foundation and a hose bib wasinstalled for a drip system to be hooked to. Atthis point the gutters are scheduled, as isanother tank. At that time if budget allows afirst flush can be installed. This system isinstalled on a 90 yr. old building moved fromanother location in past. 2160 Bacon St.,Ocean Beach Ca. This location will use all thewater for a vegetable garden on site. A classwas held for volunteers who worked on thesystem and facts about design and water"realities" were presented. Materials and laborwere donated as a local community project. Contact Greg for more info on the project
