welcometoarcola theatre’s 10th year

Over the last 10 years Arcola Theatre has takenthousands of theatregoers on a theatrical journeyby producing and presenting some of the mostdiverse and challenging work for the London stage.We have presented plays that have rarely seen thelight of day as well as revisit more contemporaryplaywrights and present the finest Internationalwork. Arcola has championed new writers and

emerging directors and offered a continuing platform with which tocontinue their journey. During the next five months we continue whatwe started and finish the year with a bang.

This season’s journey includes two British premieres: The ambitiousnew play Pieces of Vincent by David Watson, one of the youngesttalents I’ve come across in years; and a new play set in Vienna, fromone of the most individual voices in British theatre; Snoo Wilson:Reclining Nude with Stockings.

There are also two revivals from major dramatists: Martin Crimp’s TheCountry and Joe Penhall’s Blue/Orange.Wewelcome back the directorsAmelia Nicholson (The Shawl, Victory) and Femi Elufowoju, jr (Gods AreNot to Blame) both previous Arcola successes.

Our International commitment continues as we welcome the KaliTheatre with a new play set in London and India and, a Merchantof Venice in Japanese. Also in the international repertoire CanadianJudith Thompson’s incredible new play about Iraq: Palace of the End

In addition to plays, music has always played a significant role at theArcola, and this season we are pushing the boat out further than before.After two successful years, Grimeborn is back for two weeks oftheatrical innovation with a mix of new and revived operatic worksfrom emerging artists. In Studio two we are presenting Arcola’s firstever dance company C-12 who will be exploring the collision of danceand physical theatre.

Finally, to finish the year, I will be directing two musicals – Harold Rome’sPins and Needles, the 1937 Broadway musical review that will featureArcola Street garment workers and my first full production of MarcBlitzstein’s controversial The Cradle Will Rock.

The journey will continue in 2011 as the theatre relocates to a newspace with a full new season of work. You’ll find more details inside.

Spoofing everything from fascist European dictators to bigots in theDaughters of the American Revolution organisation, Pins and Needles isthe hit 1937Broadwaymusical reviewwith a decidedly pro-union standpoint.

Originally conceived as a small scale production for the then strikingInternational Ladies GarmentWorkers Union, in a basement of a clothesfactory in New York, Pins and Needles went on to be the first and onlysuccessful Broadwaymusical review by non-professionals. To celebratethe production’s 25th anniversary, a studio recording was releasedfeaturing the then unknown Barbra Streisand.

future arcola: 2011 and beyond

This December Arcola reaches two historic milestones; our 10th birthdayand ironically, the final performances in our current home. Whilst it’s beenon the cards for a while; the redevelopment of the Arcola building has forcedus to make a move. Yet we see this as a real opportunity to secure Arcola’sfuture in Hackney for the next ten years and beyond.

So, in January 2011 Arcola will be leasing another disused factory, theColourworks building at 24 Ashwin Street, and converting it into newtheatre spaces and studios. True to our ethic of sustainability and DIY, we’llbuild the spaces with recycled materials, and at a fraction of the cost ofmany recent theatre developments. Our move to the centre of Dalston willalso place us right across the street from both the Dalston Kingsland and thenew Dalston Junction Overground stations, as well as on nine bus routes.

We’ve got stuck in, but we’ve done as much as we can with the aid of ourdedicated volunteers. Now the real building work must begin, and in order to make this dream a reality we will be looking for the first time to you, our Arcola audience for support.

We will be launching an appeal in September to raise the £320,000conversion costs in just one month. Our appeal will bring together art,fashion and theatre and set a challenge for us all.
