Arcing devices

GENERAL Requirements for arcing devices:

Distribution of voltage • This protective device has the job of effecting an even distribution ofvoltage along the string, which can be accomplished by using a ring in-stead of a horn in some instances.

Stress distribution • Along with the tower and the cantilever, the device should produce a stressdistribution which will carry away the arc as fast as possible from the in-sulators.

Stability • Arcing devices are also responsible for keeping stable the burning arc soas to protect the insulators while at the same time preventing the arc frombeing deflected to the conductor.

Base point • The base point of the arc should be located in a manner that direct radia-tion onto the insulator is avoided thus preventing damage to the insulatorand the arc should also burn as far away from the insulator as possible.

Single path system • The arc should be fed on one side so that it may be safely displaced to thenominal burning point.

Contamination • Even dirt flash-over between the insulator discs must be handled by the arcing device.

Corona • The stress distribution caused by the protective device should be such that itor any other fitting may not form a corona at the voltage level at which it isused.

Interchangeability • The arcing device should be interchangeable without having to dismant-le the string.

Insulator types • The arcing device which is used must be suitable for use with the various insulator types.

Installation Contrary to the standard execution of the arcing accessories it is not possibleto state a firm rule for the installation arrangement of the accessories on the in-sulator string.The installation depends on the type of strings, single or double strings, in linedirection or perpendicular, suspension, tension strings or V-strings and also onthe shape of the tower and the possible movement of the strings in case of windloads.In each case a review of the installation arrangement of the accessories is use-ful and the decision should be made with special regard to the conditions ofdistribution system and line as well as to the type of tower construction.

Short circuit current The short circuit capability depends on the material section, but with forked ty-pes the short circuit current parts into two branches allowing for smaller sec-tions than normal.

Connection Connections to the hardware acc. to DIN 48068 and ÖNORM E4199. Other connections are available.

Fixing device Fixing device is included.

Hot dip galvanising Steel hardware is hot dip galvanised in Mosdorfer’s own plant.Galvanising can be done in accordance to national and international stan-dards.

Arcing ringsfor composite insulators.

Various types of arcing device are available for composite insulators. Accordingto requirements they will be adapted with regard to the voltage level, fixing possibilities, etc.In addition to the normal fixing at ball and socket eyes or double eyes a fixing on-to the end-fitting of the insulators is also possible in certain cases.
