ACADEMIC COSTUMES Academic costumes are worn to lend a touch of ancient

pageantry to our · Commencement activities. The wearing of the cap and gown marks the formal admission of the candidate to the degree. The significance of the costume is determined especially by the sleeves and the hoods. Doctors wear the round bell sleeves and a gold tassel on the cap. Masters wear the long, closed sleeves with a slit near the upper part of the arm. Bachelors wear the long, pointed sleeves. Hoods are lined with the colors of the institution from which the wearer received his degree and are trimmed with velvet of the color indicative of the degree. The color code is as follows: arts and letters, white; philosophy, blue; science, golden yellow; fine arts, brown; music, pink; physical education, sage green; engineering, orange; pharmacy, olive green; veterinary science, gray; agriculture, maize; economics, copper; honored guests, crimson lined with gray.
