INTRODUCTION

This annotated guide to printed resource materials for crime prevention willhelp to fill a need long recognized by those working in the field of crimeprevention. Most of those who work in this area, be they police, non-policeprofessionals, or citizens, find themselves with few guides to available resourcesfor program development. This publication has been designed to provide such aguide by annotating selected printed holdings in crime prevention available fromthe Ministry of Attorney General, the Ministry of the Solicitor General of Canada,and the Justice Institute of British Columbia. This list has been organized intocategories which will help users focus on their particular interest more readily.

The list of materials, and the annotations, were researched and written byLynn Clarke, formerly of the Research and Evaluation Division, Ministry ofAttorney General. Sincere thanks is due to her and also to Janice Vickers whoprepared this material for publication.

It is hoped that this bibliography will be a valuable tool in helping thoseworking in or interested in crime prevention to develop and further their knowledgeand expertise.

Although this is an American publication, many of the items in the appendices could serve as samples. Included are youth needs assessment survey instruments, a' delinquency prevention planning model, youth services directory data-gathering instruments, sample pages of youth services directories, descriptions of available public presentation aids and guidelines on using the media.

A short booklet which briefly describes American community crime prevention programs in the areas of public education campaigns, home and neighbourhood security, environmentally-related anti-crime programs, prevention of specific crimes such as theft of farm equipment, programs aimed at the elderly, youth and children, the handicapped and ex-offenders, drug and alcohol abuse, and victim/witness service programs. Useful for those unfamiliar with the kinds of crime prevention programs that can be initiated in communities.
