The strategic location of this historical wool factory in Macaulay which is close to the Macaulay station is a great opportunity to develop a residential building. The site which is within the circle of North Melbourne Community Centre area leads to the idea of introducing youth and culture facilities that is lacking in the existing facilities. Furthermore, a proposed park on the east side of the building enhances the opportunity to connect directly with public realm. Being particularly interested in relationships in different scale, the concept of this project promotes the variety of interactions and facilities shared within a neighbourhood.

Based on the study of demographics, they are expecting students, perseverance of young professionals, and desires to appeal to families. Therefore, this project is seen as a series of segments. The lowest two levels serve as public realm and amenity while the next three floors are apartments and the last two levels are lofts with a roof terrace shared among the residents. The two cores act as a buffer space that connect three distinct neighbourhoods, which are families, students, and young professionals respectively from the north. Each neighbourhood is treated with different apartment and shared spaces based on the level of interaction of each neighbourhood. For young professionals, the shared space focuses on dining while families are designated space for kids. In the case of students, they are oriented around cooking and living. Different type of apartments are provided to appeal to diversity of residents. Dual acesss of duplex and single access simplex are available for students and a semi-detached self-maintained studio is available for family apartments in the forms of triplexes.

The ground floors are seen as the extension of the proposed park, drawing people by allowing access both sides with changing levels. This permeability is framed by a series of pods housing community and amenity programs. The programs on public realm is spread across the building, creating activation to the building as a whole during the day and night. Selections are based on the activity hour of the programs. This leads to the use of polycarbonate and glazing as its finishing to create activation on the ground floors using light.

With the theme of parasitic architecture, this studio challenges the relationship of the old and the new with its climate and surrounding context. Round House, which is considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Australia used to be a prison made out of local limesotnes. Despite the history, this building is open to public as museum. The surrounding area is often used for special events such as wedding as well. These usage encourage the idea of developing this Round House into a better museum such as creating access and more spaces that is currently lacking. As the focal point of Fremantle, a motel would be suitable as it is required in the project. The main idea is to feature its panopticon idea to create new access and view points. Minimal structure and translucent facade contrasts the existing Round House. These glasses are fritted to reduce the heat from the harsh sun. The attachable eaves on the windows are installed with PV cell to produce electricity independently. Making use of the high rain rate, unused well is utilized to to water the park next to the building, cooling, and water usage.

The concept of this urban planning is to let the owner of the house design their own building with a cheaper option while still maintaining the culturistic value of Cut Paw Paw area, in hope to create a new character in the area that people are proud of with many people of a low socio-economic demographic.Looking at the relationship between the parks and housing in particular is one of the approaches taken to improve the housing development and environment. Making connection to the public park is one of the top priority. As most of these parks are former quarries, they have no prior intention of becoming a public facility. Therefore, this project provides solutions of the existing residential lots to connect with the park which eventually may have a ‘knock-on’ effect to the houses surround it. These growing access are hoped to help increase the density within the area.Taking the unique and historical designs around this particular area in Australia, molds are mass-produced using local materials such as concrete, brick, and timber. It is important to collaborate with the local manufacturers to provide the residents with cheaper parts they can use to built their houses. Based on the research, 80% of the manufacturers focus on concrete. The strategy is to provide booklets as guidance and promotion of this ideas. An incentive can help to promote this idea to the people, together with the council. The target lies on the old buildings and empty lots that are potentially will be built in the near future as the first step to spore this long time process.

The parks are quite random in shape and often having houses surrounds it. Therefore variety of relationship of the park to the house occurs. The relationships are categorized into 3 types as shown above and 6 different approaches are on the right.

This carpet factory requires an extension of spaces in eating, meeting, and greeting as the number of workers are growing. On the ground of Interface’s campaign of environmentally friendly production, it is desired to establish the same image to the factory itself. Therefore, the new spaces aims for a better working environment along with lighting, heating-cooling, and recyclibilty. This additional spaces house not only cafetaria and meeting spaces but also lobby and display for both workers and visitors. Its close to nature atmosphere is created by open ceiling with growing plantation. The timber-like finish imitates the trees, as nature is proven to multiplies the effectivity of human acitivities. The whole design process is through physical model making.

Located right in front of South Yarra station, this triangular public park is bound by railways on two sides and residential area on the other side. It is found to be a perfect extension of the existing community centre as it is located in the central of its suburban area. Weaving alternation of the space aims for a more delicate programmatic changes in the park. It produces a firm yet natural segmentation of spaces. The issue of access is eased by bridges that allows changes in view points with smooth transition of height. The main entrance particularly making used of the existing tram stop to invite more people onto this park. The boundary of the park to existing neighbourhood is improved by landscaping along the existing fence to limit the view points of the park visitors towards the existing house.

This project revolves around the issue Edith Fransworth having with her house. Without moving away from the atmospheric idea of Fransworth House that is surrounded by nature, an alternative house for Edith Fransworth on a typical suburban block in Melbourne is erected with the idea of arrayment of woods. These ‘sticks’ circulates around the program inside the house itself, allowing the client to feel nature to its fullest without any explicit exposure.

CARD DISPLAY SPACEMonash University, Caulfield East, MelbourneFoundation Studio, 2012
In a group of two, bodies and structure are explored through models. The ‘chair’ made from cardboard (8mm thick) is required to withstand different positions of a human body. Lying, standing, and sitting are tried upon the model. Shape and structure depend heavily on body positions. The shape implies where and how the body may rest upon, while the structure is considered on where the body weighs according to different positions taken.
Bodies and Structure
To design an occupiable display space, ideas are explored with models in 1:20 scale. The idea is to exhibit the work during the trimester with framing as the structural requirement. A passage is built to direct the building occupants as they pass walk onto the lobby from escalator and elevators. Continual framing creates an atmospheric nest as the existing lighting is changed by the roof strands.

The final piece is constructed based on the development of 5 students in the studio. Within the limited amount of cardboards (8 and 12mm thick), the studio challenge the 1:1 construction on the site. A story-telling passage is then created with 5 main parts. The first one is the minotaur that serves the last prototype before the construction. Afterwards, the threshold welcomes the visitor, showing two paths to choose from. The open and hidden displays are paralled to each other right behind the threshold, which ends with the oracle and the exit.

The StuffThe following selection of ‘objects’ largely taken from the collection of the National Museum of Australia (NMA2) could generally be considered as part of Australia’s ‘National’ identity.
» Phar Lap’s Heart (NMA)
» A windmill in the West (Peter Carey3)
» Convict Love Token (NMA)
» Faith Bandler’s Gloves (NMA)
» Pie Floater
» Azaria Chamberlain’s Dress (NMA)
The significance or importance of these objects is defined by the events and people they are associated with, and that have ‘shaped’ Australia’s culture. Our aim is to liberate these objects from the bounds of the NMA, and to investigate what new narrative might appear if they are inserted into a different or more local context; a context that might not be understood as a traditional museum or gallery space.

3 A WINDMILL IN THE WEST
‘But this is not a caravan, not a real caravan. It resembles an aluminium coffin with a peculiar swivelling base constructed like the base of a heavy gun. The
soldier has no idea why anyone would design it that way, but he has taken advantage of it, changing the direction of the caravan so that the front door
faces away from the wind. Changing the view, is what he calls it, changing the view.
No matter which way you point that door the view doesn’t alter. All that changes is the amount of fence you see. Because there is nothing else - no
mountains, no grass, nothing but a windmill on the western side of the line.’

SUPERSTUDIO 2015 : MIND THE GAP
THE AUSTRALIAN COLLECTIVE MEMORYMelbourne, AustraliaCompetition Entry, 2015
“Gaps are purposely created in order to invite the visitor to play a game and become the interpreter. Rather than give you the story, you are given clues and invited to co-produce the story.”- Andrea Witcomb
“This desire to activate the audience in participatory art is at the same time a drive to emancipate it from a state of alienation induced by the dominant ideological order— participatory art aims to restore and realize a communal, collective space of shared social engagement... the work seeks to forge a collective, co-authoring, participatory social body.”- Claire Bishop
The quotes represents the direction taken based on the competition brief to exhibit 6 selected objects. The locations are chosen as they are the part of Australia’s heart that is sited side by side.
