porte urbane IIThe aim of the project is to create two new central district for business with intermodal stations in the areas where the city plan (DPP of Bari) locates urban gates. The starting point for the project is the connection between these two points of convergence, obtained by the middle streets that cross the built-up areas, over the railway. The project is composed by a complex system of punctual elements which keep together and mark the edges of the empty spaces: this idea begins by reading the character of the areas as they were heads of rural zone which, by insi-

nuating in the city, seem to be sorts of green “wedges” and change from wild to agricultural field. Those wedges are part of a wider open spaces reorganization which creates an ecological network composed of the only green spaces in the city and of the project sites. The purpose is to establish a new order in the areas, trying to include infrastructures as parts of the operation, both adaptive and complex urban organisms, natural landscape artificialized with a slow delicate transformation, valuing the old shapes of an agricultural and craft past.

univerCity in the Jesuit monasteryThe University “Federico II” in the historic city of Naples stans on a hill along the ancient greek-roman wall; it is composed of a series of monasteries with courtyards on several terra-ces and at it is abandoned, even though there are historical museums and libraries in the upper floors. In order to give back the importance the building had, the aim is to establish a spread campus in the historic city, of whom the building will be the head, a hub and a student center. To obtain it, the different operations are thought to reorga-nize both internal and external connections, modifying parts of the structure, introducing new pedestrian bridges and re-storating the back street “via Paladino”, as it was designed to enter directly in the courtyards, overpassing the problem of the gaps of levels. This is possible by restorating the di-srepaired Ramps “del Salvatore”.Finally modifying the facades of the low courtyard, opening the arches to create a continuous loggia and furnishing the groundfloor, it is possible to generate a square that beco-mes the foyer to the museums of the upper levels.

The project is composed of four independent halls both from structural and functional point of view, following a swastika composition. So doing different functions are de-clared to be practiced: theatre, auditorium, convention hall and two cinemas are connected each other through the

central hall, the real nucleus of the project. The outer layer is all panelled in corten iron in order to re-veal a unique building shell threatened by vertical shapes: those full-height windows correspond, in terms of functio-nality, with the internal distribution system.

Page 54: Architecture portfolio_ eng

Working on the edges of the built-up areas in Foggia, the project needs an urban design able to seem mimetic, but at the same time correspond with a significant material mark in the landscape. The hypogeal system is justified by the necessity for integration with the stark horizontality of the

landscape. The arena visual impact is almost nullified as the roof pat-tern is managed as a great square/ cretto, whose blocks perform as seats and skylight for the gym below.

mediterranean center for TarantaA great vertical garden on platforms which recall Mediter-ranean vegetation and colours of the Salento land: whe-at and gold. Internal spaces can host one after the other farms, dance classes for “pizzica” or “taranta”; gold ramps allow to create a continuum between vegetable gardens and working and studying spaces.

The shingle is a veil, the hem of skirts used in taranta ballet, which permits light to enter inside the hall through small holes. Internal enlightenment and ventilation for spaces are assured by great air openings without fixtures, while the outer layout reminds a stone monolith, almost a dere-lict, that is watching the nearby church.

citadel athletics departmentcommercial activities in order to vivify the way to sporting facilities. The latter are hidden in the underground so as to convert the shingle surface in green roof connected with natural trails between edible garden and local plants.Residences are thought in a modern way, located in social housing which guarantee good habitability presupposi-tions for athletes who will live into.

The city of Foggia needs new constructions able to integra-te with the context, but at the same time to stand as une-quivocal landmarks for the contemporary, so that people could meet and recognize themselves. The theme afford to orientate architecture following two straight lines which, as they were shapes in the rural landscape, mark a new space where all interests and attentions flow into. Two twin blocks stand next to the central paved street and host

link ribbonThe old Donauwörth barrack needs an operation to recon-nect the wide military zone with the old town, as at the moment it represent only a satellite. The sinuous red ribbon aspire to be a direct link to the city centre, working as a bicycle path and specializing in polyva-

lent hall when it intercept in the project site. Refunctionalization of existent warehouse starts from reinterpretation of classic pitched roofs of the Bavarian area so as to create an homogeneous but distinguishable row houses system.

regenerate edgesStarting from the mobility and from the geometrical rules which govern the context composition, it was possible to create a grid to educate the landscape. The result is a homogeneous settlement, well insert in the built-up area; the project axes, born from the paralle-lism between street ones, generate a route in two directions which flow into a final space where a square is designed with orthogonal

patterns. Eco-sustainability is the key of the project using pallets, strong and cheap materials. Polyvalent functions goes from sporting facilities, to performing arts and market stands: so doing the park will be accessi-ble to different types of target, revitalizing the whole area.

church restaurationThis little building in the old town of Molfetta had been frequently injured during its whole life but the most significant alteration has been done with the last restoration in 2003, which ruined it instead of curing. This new operation has several intentions: first of all giving back di-gnity it had, trying to beautify the context where it is located, now de-

signed in relation with the solemnity of the place; secondly recreating the same perception the hall had when there was the stone barrel vault introducing a wood one; then curing the environment healthful-ness, damaged by damp walls because of the location, nearby to the sea; finally introducing a natural ventilation system in structural walls in order to allow air flows.

tower renewalCountryside in Puglia is spangled with medieval towers, currently abandoned. In this case d’Aconto tower restora-tion is thought as a renewal to generate living function. The rising of two floors over the existing ruin generate an exi-stenzminimum house between stone walls. Inside the nu-cleus a wood box shows its independency as it never touch

the structure; the unique roofing is a concrete shingle, a sort of stopper to avoid any “swinging” problems, with a central oculus that allows the continuous passage of the solar luminous; the external free-standing stair is in white concrete.

row houses with patioThe building is reinforced in concrete to allow a free internal design, so that spaces are wide and ventilated. All rooms are thought in relation with patio that allows good enlightenment both in ground and first floors.

Antithetical theme to open spaces is the screening operation, obtai-ned with a wood batten system, in order to have a filter for sunlight permeability in the outside and elegant separation between rooms in the inside.
