MUSEUM OF PUBLIC ART

This studio assignment was to design a multi-purpose museum on the currently empty site on the west side of Factors Walk in Savannah. The outcome of this studio was a Multi-Cultural Museum of Public Art. The programming included a gateway to River Street, along with a gallery space primary for guerilla art. The idea was to bring the community of Savannah into the site, and create an interactive space for all users.

This project utilized the importance of creating a formally designed space focused on traditional site analysis. Successful areas of this project include understanding of site, urban context, plan to section relationship, analysis of construction and detailed model and process.

This studio assignment was to design a multi-purpose market that fit within the vacant lot on Broughton Street. We were instructed to analyse the needs of downtown Savannah residents. Much of those needs were addressed in the program of this market, which is a self-serve bulk foods store. Much of the resulting design focused on programmatic needs, complete with a stage on the roof and an interior atrium to allow for natural light.

This project was successful in the analysis of circulation, and the materials were heavily examined to create human comfort. The other success was its focus on timber construction.

Many SCAD students live a nocturnal lifestyle, where they get hungry and tired. Few stores in the area operate past 9 pm, bringing to light a essential demand for a 24/7 market. This market would cater to SCAD student’s and their needs

This studio assignment was to create a Chapel on the historic rice plantation near Riceboro, GA. Research was done on historic religious building, and slavery at the plantation. The resulting form contains linear movement through the space based on the golden ratio. The entire concept is a metaphor for the fulfilment of time in its divinity. Intentional placement of light guides users through a personally spiritual moment.

This project was successful in research and site analysis, urban context, natural environment, user response, detailed construction theory, and craft. It has provided inspiration for even the most recent projects, because it utilizes human talent and behavior.

This is a Wedding Chapel at Graceland, inspired by the outrageous performance costumes of Elvis, and the creation of a spectacle in his performance. This project is about the transition of 2D to 3D using self-same replication of a primitive module. The metamorphosis begins with stacking scales that mutate into a volumetric unit. This module then pulls and swells into volumes that define the interior. The end result is an excessive and crustaceous volume that envelops the site and arranges a spectacle out of the replicating surface.

This project was successful in research and site analysis, urban context, analysis of construction techniques, and quality of craft. Although the process and outcome became something that stands out in the overall portfolio, it forced following projects to consider digital discourse.

This is a Tesla Automotive Dealership. The concept for this design follows Tesla’s mission, to have no secrets. This building will stand out amongst the ruins of Detroit because it will employ sleek lines devoted to appeal to the viewer and also reference site adjacencies. This project emphasizes curves and motion found in the design practices of Tesla, while maintaining theories specific to the program and site.

Located on the Seine in Paris, this Winery embraces French culture with its program. Its design is driven by climatic forces. This project addresses the gradient forces of the temperature by analysing immediate climatic forces and utilizing them to intrinsically deform mass. Chilled air from the river begins to crystallize the waterfront façade, while heated air from man-made structures and sun heat deliquesces the street-side elevation. Secondary forces, such as topology, river flow and adjacent buildings start to direct both crystallization paths as well as the liquefied globulflows. The resulting movements of form are melded and moulded because of the immediate environment, creating a smoothness; adapting human and aquatic environments to the built form via temperature.

SECTION 3

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind”Dr. Suess

Page 46: Architecture Portfolio

46

The ground hardens with every step. It does not crunch, and the wind does not even attempt to sweep me. Everything feels solid, except my breath. I gulp for whatever water particles endure, but the air remains wavy with rays of heat. The only movement is the sun across flat land, and I walk towards an abyss that is frightening and spellbinding all at once. My eyes see vastness, a slate where every color can be seen, any mountain peak seems to represent small hopes of life and horizontality overwhelms any height I may have. My fingers swelter, my face burns, and yet my body feels free. My nose searches for life, but only comes up with dust. Faith for spiritual life comes easily, because the physical presence of it lacks. I open my mouth to speak, but any mumble or song will be eaten by this heavy air. The heat waves will replace sound, and the lack of moisture stops my voice. There will not be a resonance that can’t be ceased by this desert, and since this surreal world allows me to see for miles, sounds become irrelevant. Silence is deafening, and I am forced to accept the nature of the remainder of my senses.

Page 47: Architecture Portfolio

47

This project addresses the border between Iran and Iraq and will embrace gracefulness of steel parallel to the minimalism of structure, minimalism of the desert, and maximizes the potential for peace. The building will absorb the surreal environment that only the surrounding context of the desert can provide. The emphasis of the horizon line in this geographical context is the most influential factor to one’s vision and hearing. It allows for our sight to be expanded, to pick up on details in the far away distance, and for colors to be absolutely vibrant. The only part of the structure that will be immediately visible will be the roof line, a reflection of the vista. The rest of the design can be left to cracking ground, crawling sagebrush, distant foothills and the constant changing of the sun.

Supply and Return

Steel is the perfect material choice for the project because it displays slenderness and grace where bulk would only interrupt the landscape. It creates efficiency in structure where other materials would increase cost, and decrease sustainability. This, in turn will create an “architecture of silence”parallel to the deafening silence when walking flat and dry grounds.

Charitable organizations have provided shelter for a majority of those in need, however, 600 people have resorted to creating tent cities. The homeless of Savannah, Georgia occupy government and privately owned land. The local government has created resources to assist them, but does not have a clear resolution to accommodate them with housing. The police force has regulated their occupation, pushing them out of the historic downtown district to hazardous flood lands east and west of town. Being exiled to these lands creates an even lower standard of living being among the swamps with alligators, snakes, and other low country wildlife. Despite their lack of resources, seven homeless camps have been established on either side of the historic city. The goal of this project is to develop a prototype for a organized homeless campground, where residents can take ownership of improved land.
