harambee sustainability project Langa Township is located about 15 miles outside of Cape Town and is one of the oldest shanty towns in South Africa.In Langa, the people inhabit makeshift homes out of scrap material found around the area. The sanitation of the community is a great concern, especially when it comes to nutrition. Soil in Langa is far too brittle and dry and fresh water Soil in Langa is far too brittle and dry and fresh water is too sparse for fruits and vegetables to grow, so community members resort to unhealthy processed food and drink.The eating habits people of Langa Township, and many other surrounding townships, have become the community's biggest threat. Harambee Sustainability Project organized 20 students from Tulane University and 8 women in students from Tulane University and 8 women in Langa Township to come together to strategize and build a communal vegetable garden that would succeed in the harsh environments. Raised wooden garden beds covered with netting was the proper solution for creating a comfortable environment for fruits and vegetables to grow.
