WORK EXPERIENCE

During  a  week  spent  at  a  local  architects  firm,  I  was  given  a  design  brief.  The  initial  brief  read,  ‘Design  a  small  living  space  for  a  famous  person,  alive  or  dead.  What  the  structure  is  made  from,  where  it  goes  and  and  what's  inside  it  is  totally  up  to  you,  money  is  no  object’.  The  specification  for  the  design  stated  that  the  Living  space  should  be  made  of  3  cubes.  Each  cube  was  3m  x  3m  x  3m  to  begin  with.  The  cubes  could  then  be  split  up. The  Famous  person  that  I  chose  was  Bear  Grylls,  a  celebrity  explorer  known  for  teaching  survival  skills  on  the  television.  I  aimed  to  design  a  small  space  for  explorers  to  stay  in  the  Scottish  highlands  during  expeditions.

STILL LIFE

I  am  inspired  by  still  life  artists  such  as  Ambrosius  Bosschaert  and  Paul  Cezanne.  I  think  that  its  important  that  the  chosen  objects  in  a  still  life  have  meaning  and  connection  to  the  artist.

The  Dutch  Vanitas  paintings  of  16th  and  17th  century  are  particularly  inspiring  as  they  have  analogies  that  symbolize  themes  such  as  the  vanity,  decay  and  the  brevity  of  life.  In  my  work  I  wanted  to  produce  modern  vanitas.    I  looked  at  the  themes  of  gluttony,  substance  abuse  and  mental  health  in  my  work.  I  feel  that  the  objects  I  chose  have  deeper  meanings  and  are  symbolic  of  the  brevity  of  life.

DISTRESS AND DECAY

The  main  theme  in  the  following  work  is  distress  and  decay.  I  think  that  there  is  beautiful  quality  to  objects  and  buildings  that  have  surfaces  that  are  distressed  and  show  visual  texture.  

Textural  study  of  a  distressed  window  –  Acrylic  paint

This  painting  is  an  observational  study  of    a  window  from  a  local  building  in  disrepair.  I  was  inspired  by  Anselm  Kiefer  to  add  filler  and  PVA  glue  to  the  paint  to  replicate  the  decaying  textures  of  the  window.
