URBAN HOUSING

My building, situated in the middle of the site, faces directly onto two larger urban pockets. The portion facing onto the northern urban pocket has commercial and retail space. The portion facing onto the southern ur-ban pocket has access to live/work spaces, and an entry ramp onto the raised green courtyard within the apartment complex. My design strat-egy is centered around creating the feeling of a woodland within Berlin’s urban context, alluding to Germany’s own southern forests.

There are several aspects of my sus-tainable strategy, however the largest is the use of massive timber construc-tion. The building, which is five stories tall in the front, and four stories tall in the back, is made entirely out of environmentally friendly wood. The large courtyard between these two apartment blocks is filled with plant-ings and trees. The two roof surfaces are topped with a solar panels and a community garden for apartment residents. There is also a bike storage room situated on the ground level beneath the entrance ramp into the courtyard. The building overall has a social sustainability aspect, with en-trances to all apartments facing out onto an exterior circulation system. The elevator, not regularly used, is a platform which when added to the floor’s circulation creates an outdoor gathering space

VISUAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOL

My Visual Arts School reveals the art school program-ming to the inside of the site, and within the building itself. It presents a cellular casing to the exterior edges of the site. The arts programing, in contrast to the compart-mentalized outside, is read as individual floating volumes within the school. The volumes create subsequent spaces beneath their mass, and also usable space on their tops. The volumes break out of the implied grid created on the buildings boundaries, making them a prominent feature. This hierarchy creates an environment where creativity and distinct character are valued.

This site, located within the flood zone of the French Broad river, is being developed into an outdoor activities center. This building, originally part of a larger industrial complex, also lays directly over an active tributary. The main electrical and plumbing systems are built within a seal able portion of the building, to withstand flood damage. The remainder or the building is light partition walls attached to the trusses, which can be relocated, removed, or replaced due to the current demands of the building..

Massachusetts Avenue is a defining feature of the Boston urban area. It is a major transpor-tation road and is used as a way finding de-vice within the city. Because of its prominent state, and its passage through many different areas, the road takes on several different personalities along its extensive route. This can be seen and observed most visibly in the materiality shift from the 1960’s work done by I.M.Pei to the historic back bay. Even the larger urban street scape reflects the varying spaces and experiences held within it. In my analysis I focused on the differing aspects of Mass Ave and their evolution through time.
