Second year architecture portfolio, University of Waterloo

TRANSCRIPT

Page 1: Architecture Portfolio 2014
Page 2: Architecture Portfolio 2014

Hello, my name is Fiona and I am currently a second year student studying architecture at the University of Waterloo. This portfolio contains work that I have done in and outside of school.

In the first two year of my architectural studies, I have developed the skills in innovative designs that combine form and function in a creative and rational way. My childhood in China has given me a first hand experience of the effects of poor urban planning and architecture in high density areas. As a result, I am inspired to explore innovative designs that provide a better living space for its residents.

I hope you enjoy this portfolio

1B STUDIO PROJECTCOMPLETED: Mar 2013LOCATED: Hood Street, Cambridge, ONIN COLLABORATION WITH:Sonja Berg, Christopher Moran, Ming Zeng

This was a challenge to convert “junk spaces” such as empty parking lots or back alleys into low to medium density residential complex. Due to their undesirable location, these spaces often become unused, and wasted space that could become valuable in a growing city. Our solution was to stack and stagger small units around a courtyard to create a community.

2A STUDIO PROJECTCOMPLETED: Dec 2013LOCATED: Hood Street, Cambridge, ON

Site Plan

This is the design of a community centre located in downtown Cambridge, Ontario. The glass facade plays with the temporal aspect of the building; during the day, the glass is reflective, thus creating an opaque surface when viewed from the exterior. At night, the effect is reversed, such that one can only see reflects of the interior when looking out from the building, but the building becomes transparent for the exterior.

Two boxes were extruded from the site.

The facade of the larger box was pushed and pulled

Courtyards and skatepark were raised and depressed

The back of the building was lowered to create a terrace
