I am a building engineer with specialisation in the field of architecture: my studies and my work experiences are focused on a range of activities that goes from the projects of private houses to the renovation of large public spaces. I also developed high competences in the field of building physics and energetical analisys of building components and plants; finally I also worked in the field of building sites safety and health, quality management (referring to the international standard EN ISO 9001), and also graphic and visual

representation of architecture and products Thanks to my work experience I have developed very good skills as far as team-work is concerned and the fact that I began to work on my master degree thesis abroad (in Portugal) gave me a quite good attitude for working

in multicultural environments.During these first years of work I also have had the possibility to improve my capacity to manage many kinds of relationships in a professional working

context, such as dealing with clients or colleagues.Through my work in professional firms I have acquired good skills in managing

time and resources. Then I am improving these skills day by day in my activitiy as free-lance engineer. This is also due by the fact that I have been dealing with increasingly

large amounts of responsibilities. The participation to some architectural competitions as team-leader also helped me to develop a good at titude for the leadership and for team

management.I have high competences in using a lot of software in the fields of architecture, building engineering, building physics and graphic visualisation, with a very

professional proficiency. In addiction I own an excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Operative Systems,

of “Microsoft Office” Suite and “Open Office” Suite.I am now searching for new professional experiences abroad because at the present time here in my country there are very low possibilities to reach an high professional target. I really hope that through this PORTFOLIO my skills will be pointed out and will be taken into account for a possible employment.

urban renewal of a dismissed suburban area01Sarpiriqualificazione urbana di un’area periferica dismessa requalificação urbana de uma area periférica demitida

site: Padova, Italyyear: 2007

The main purpose of the project is the reconstruction of a huge area dislocated at

the borders of the historical city. This area has a strong relationship on the one hand with the inner city centre and on the other hand with the suburbs. Finally a number of infrastructures marks the northern edge of this site, causing a deep fragmentation of the public space.

The project is based on a radial geometric plan orientated toward the historical walls of

the Renaissance. The presence of new buildings and the renewal of the public spaces are aimed to create a new order throughout the area and to give a new identity to this fragmented place. Moreover this point will be enhanced by the building’s functional mix and by many natural element with remarkable landscape value, such as water canals and many different kind of trees.

new plan for the area This particular project required a precise analysis of the place under an historical point of view. This was due to its closeness to a significant masterpiece in the history of the city of Padova: its old walls of the Renaissance age.The relationship between this strong shape and the disorder around it that during centuries developed, had to be taken into account when thinking of a new arrangement for the entire area. Therefore the new plan for the area was a direct consequence of the urban shape and tries to introduce new geometries and new public spaces for the city. The new asset for the area also considers the introduction of road infrastructures along the north edge of the site.

Historical map of the quarter - Extract (G.Valle)

site: Padova, Italyyear: 2007

This work aimed to underline the structure of an medieval quarter and the relationships between

different kind of spaces, through a tridimensional geometrical analysis. The neighbour building development was studied even comparing the actual situation with historical maps.

All of the streets into the neighbour are characterized by arcades, venetian styled

palaces and some row houses that filled the empty spaces during the centuries. Some interesting effetcs of lights and shadows are caused by the overhanged building that emerges from the regular frontsides of the streets.

The volumetric analysis of this historical piece of Padova’s downtown permitted to put out the

development of the builded spaces through times and at the same time to compare many architectural features that characterize the neighbour nowadays.

After the volumetric exterior analysis, another focus point of this work was to defining and comparing the different positions of floors into the buildings’ volumes. The purpose of this analysis was to stress both the evolution of buildings constructional codes and the urban regulations that rule them. To

reach these results the buildings’ envelopes were represented as transparent parts, just to let understand the inner arregement of floors; in these images even differences in the elevation are put out in a very pregnant way.

This project is focused on the study of all the technological features of a medium-sized

office building. Functional, energy and bio-climatic aspects have also been taken into account, trying to reach a balance among all this parts of the project.

All options for the technological solutions were also considered in tight relationship with the

exterior envelop and the general settlement of the building, included in a greater uban plan.

Some basic bio-climatic principles were applied in this construction: for example a

natural cross-ventilation flow is set up through the entrance hall; all glass surfaces are shaded to reach the best internal comfort, in particular in the summer season, and to filter natural light; finally a wide covering of photovoltaic panels is set up over the roof and satisfy the eletric consumption of the entire building.

The same attention used for the internal comfort is also applied to the exterior environment,

where green spaces, a water channel and terraces create a perfect setting for the building’s users, and allow them to live the building not only as a workplace facility.

Music and dance school04LisboaScuola di musica e danza Escola da música e dança site: Lisbon, Portugal

year: 2008-2009

Alcântara is one of the most important neighbour in Lisbon and appears now as an unorganized

sequence of industrial buildings, huge road, river and railway infrastructures and some historical buildings that were saved from the XIX industrialization.

My project is an attempt to re-construct urban relationships that were lost during centuries;

the theme of the project is designing a new “Music and Dance School” that not only would provide spaces for education and training, but also would create liveable open-air spaces, such as little squares and green areas. Keeping in mind this principle, new pedestrian ways were set up to link all the new complex’s blocks and great importance was given to urban equipment. Moreover a flight of steps was designed to connect two different levels of the street and to create a prosecution of the street that slopes down from the hill.

The school complex is formed of five separate buildings, each of whom is designed for different

uses: music education, dance education, offices and related facilities, a music auditorium and finally a dance theatre. The general layout of the building follows the natural shape of this site, whilst the envelopes take into account the traditional shapes of portuguese architecture and emphasize the internal use of buildings.

The complex is indeed a new important public place with great buffering qualities, that enables

with its strategic location to re-create significant social relationships that were lost during centuries.

passivehouse standard semi-detached house05PassiveHausabitazione bifamigliare a standard passivehouse vila em schiera á estandard “passivehouse”

site: Padova, Italyyear: 2009 - 2011

This building was inspired by the best principles of bioclimatic and passivehouse standard design. First of all the orientation of the building follows perfectly the heliothermic axis having the longest façades oriented towards north and south.

One of the primary design aspects considered in the project was the termal insulation: all the external walls and other part in direct touch with the external environment (air and ground) are enclosed into a 16 cm thick insulation layer. This fact enables to maintain a permanent value of thermal trasmitance all around

the house’s envelope. Furthermore a great attention was paid about the insulation of thermal bridges: the structural joints between floors and walls, and between floors and balconies, are characterized by the presence of EPS blocks with iron rods passing through that connect the strucutural parts without interrupting the continuity of thermal insulation layers.

As far as the summer climatic behaviour of the building is concerned, the solar overheating can be avoided by a wide porch that covers a big part of the south façade and by a glazed overhang with integrated sunshade; moreover all the windows and glazed parts of the house can partially filter or totally screen the solar

radiation through venetians blinds. Finally both thermal layers and structural part are composed by high thermal inertial materials, that permit an high phase thermal displacement, improving the internal comfort and reducing significantly the energetical consumption for heating and coling.

Another fundamental aspect that was considered in the design project is that relationship between the house and surrounding environment. The peripheral location of the building permits to maintain wide green spaces all around it: thus all living rooms are provided with wide openings that put them into imediate relationship

with the external green spaces.

site: Vó - Padova, Italyyear: 2010 - present date

The themes focused on this project are the landscape and the local building

tradition. Both buildings are characterized by compact volumes that set up a smooth relationship with the surroundings green and rural environment.

There are many living spaces that prosecute outside the buildings with the

presence of verandas, porches and balconies. These spaces create a sort of filtering areas that contributes to enhance the bio-climatic and energetical aspects of the project.

Finally I chose for the constructions many materials that have a strong relationship

with the context and also respect the economic requirements given by the clients.

urban renewal and riqualification of an ex-industrial area07Pil l i Masterplanriqualificazione e rinnovamento urbani di un’ex area industriale requalificação e renovação urbanas de uma ex área industrial

site: Padova, Italyyear: 2009 - 2011

The project aimed to renovate and riqualificate a huge dismissed industrial area bounded to be demolished. The area will be converted into a new multi-functional urban district, where many human activities will be joined, such residential, commercial, business, all of them surrounded by a large amounts of public areas. In

fact new pedestrian squares, a large new park and a civic center are considered in the masterplan: in particular this last new spaces give the entire area a new urban meaning and stimulate the development of new connections with the surrounding suburban areas.

The urban strategy that was carried on in this masterplan provides a appreciable increase of building density, thus promoting the introduction of extensive green areas and important cycle and pedestrian ways that allow this site to preserve a fundamental urban dimension. In a certain way this masterplan permits it to

rediscover its urban dimension and its close connection with the rest of the city.

The entire urban geometry has been rethought and in particular the green areas introduce into the site new environmental values that are totally absent at the present time. Indeed these green spaces contribute to give the site a proper identity with an high public target. The important extension of public spaces permits

to convert the site from an abandoned industrial area into a point where urban features can gather and join together.

urban planning for the rehabilitation of an ex-industrial area08Ex-Dialcos Urban Planpiano urbanistico per il recupero di un ex area industriale plano urbano para a recuperação de um sitio industrial demitido

site: Padova, Italyyear: 2010 - 2011

This urban planning focused on the best way to rehabilitate an abandoned industrial area at the margins of the city and located

along a riverside.

It is just this environmental element that gives the building site a special attractivness. The project took into account the relationship

between the river and the external spaces by using green areas and one repared inner court, around whom the three blocks of residential buildings receive value and a new urban contextualization.

At the present time all the area is characterized by the presence of an irregular and disordered building texture, which doesn’t permit

to preceive the river and at the same time create an isolated plot.

The facades of the building are conceived to let the ground floors permeable by the presence of porches where are concentrated all

the entrances at the blocks. The upper floors are planned to be protected from the solar rays by a wooden sunshade over a metallic structure.

The inner court determines on one side an intimate place for the resident repared from the traffic, and on the other side keeps in

touch the external private spaces with the public riverside esplanade.

A further value for the building is given by the presence of photovoltaic roofs which determine an high electrical supply and permit to

improve the environmental sustainability of the project.

competition for the lakeside paysagistical, environmental and urban renewal09Brenzone - Lake of Gardaconcorso di idee per la riqualificazione urbana, paesaggistica ed ambientale del lungo-lago

site: Brenzone (Verona), Italyyear: 2010result: finalist projectwatch at http://europaconcorsi.com/authors/2144638518

The competition aimed to requalificate eight kilometers of lake coast; because of the

huge extension of this area the plan involves all territorial aspects, from landscaping matters to urban contexts.

The planned area will appear like an eight- kilometers long square where many activities

can be developed: a continuous strip containing pedestrian and cycle paths, quays, small ports, solarium and floor-integrated ducts that hold all the technological, water and sanitary plants.

Along the lakeside there are also some urban centre that will be renewed and gathered

into a single planning idea. Therefore the lakeside will display a new coherent and vivid image, and also will be removed all the discontinuity points that nowadays don’t permit a comfortable and safe access to the lake. Touristic activities will be stimulated and above all the environmental and paysagistical qualities of the area will be greatly improve.

Many of the proposed interventions aimed to establish reversible, ecological and indeed

sustainable urban and infrastructural equipments, setting a long period program that will allow this

territory to develop into a new perspective. For example the major works to protect the coast from wave erosion are formed by mixed structure (steel, concrete and wood) totally removable. Moreover all green spaces are conceived to contain only local trees and the finishes are realized with local building material, such as Prun stone, marbles and wood: in this way all CO2 emissions will be reduced since the beginning of building phase. Finally it is remarkable the extensive use of renewable energies along the lakeside: wind turbine and photovoltaic panels mark all focusing point of the lakeside and in particular will allow local communities to be independent from carbon energy resources.

renovation of the square “Ferdinando di Savoia”10Peschiera - Garda Lakeconcorso di idee per la riqualificazione urbana, paesaggistica ed ambientale del lungo-lago

site: Peschiera del Garda (Verona), Italyyear: 2011result: finalist projectwatch at http://europaconcorsi.com/authors/2144638518

The square “Ferdinando di Savoia” appears nowadays like an inchoerent amount of fragments with no order e no real public function, except for a large parking area that doesn’t allow local inhabitants and tourists to perceive it as an historical point of the city centre. The plan tries to establish a new order and geometries,

inspired by many traces taken from the historical context that plays as a theatre scene around the square.

architecture + urban planning

The overall principles that lead the project have been the attention to the sorrounding historical

context and the attempt to transform the existing space into a functional, attractive and more friendly place. A new green and sloped “parterre” determines a new pedestrian square that will connect all sorrounding buildings and roads. Moreover the square will become a new important infrastructure, distributing car traffic in a organized way and revitalising the importance of the near “Voltoni” bridge and of the pedestrian roads that converge into the square. The project provides for this square both new unexperienced architectural elements, like flights of steps, green areas, urban equipment, and the reminescence of historical elements, like water channels, that unveil the antique use of this square with the presence of a large dock. Another focusing point in this project was also the study of artificial illumination, that should improve the funcionality and attraction of this square at night time. Finally the urban equipment and the use of local materials (especially stones and marble) used for the project enhance the historical square and the surrounding buildings.

european competition for urban renewal of Saint Kjelds Plads and Saint Kjelds Kvarter11Europan 11 - Urban Paradigmconcorso europeo per la riqualificazione urbana di Saint Kjelds Plads e Saint Kjelds Kvarter

site: Copenhagen , Denmarkyear: 2011result: finalist projectwatch at http://europaconcorsi.com/authors/2144638518

The urban plan developed for this competition concerns a substantial change to Saint Kjelds Plads’ actual function: this place will be transformed from a traffic way into a pedestrian and more attractive square, giving the entire district a new large public place where people can spend their spare time and where social

relationships can be stimulated and improved: in other words here will be established a new urban attraction.

The new pedestrian square will substitute the existing roundabout, it will redefine public space’s structure not only in the map but also at eye level and particularly it will be considered as the real district’s centre. The square’s shape is developed by considering the importance of maintaining the perception of radial street’s

drawing and in the same way by enhancing the overall principle of “urban paradigm”. This principle leads the entire proposal at each scales, and helps the project to find a well defined and vivid character both on the map and at eye level. Saint Kjelds Plads will become a new epicentre in Osterbro’s district and will develop a great appeal for new cultural, recreational and also commercial activities. This type of activities reflects the goal of giving local inhabitants more friendly public spaces, but also to create a new urban polarity that may attract people from other quarters to join a modern and interesting place.

scheme explaining waterain reuse project

The requalification of the four radial streets converging at Saint Kjelds Plads passes through the revitalisation of all of

the triangular squares that lie on the numerous crossroads and that produce little appendixes of buildings facing the corners.

Today these squares have not a clear use or function, and seem only to be cut-out places with no importance for the

daily life of the district. Therefore the first thought was to give them a new function, relating to the needs of the different areas into the quarter and to the dimension of the same squares The project points out three different functions to these squares: green areas, cultural and recreational spaces are set up and distributed in Saint Kjelds Kvarter: their presence aims to promote a more continuous use of the streets for the quarter’s inhabitants and to create a greater appeal even for those people who use these roads to reach train or metro stations at the four corners of the district.

These functions can develop and improve the entire quality of life of the district and also the uses of buildings facing the

streets, such as shops, offices and houses.

In order to minimize the flooding problem in Saint Kjelds Kvarter, this urban plan includes an increase of permeable

surfaces and in addition some plants for rainwater reuse.

The basic plant for rainwater reuse consists of one filter that lies under the pavement and receive water directly from

downpipes, a tank for water storage and a system of pipes that connect the plant with the public sewer under the street.

thermal calculation on windows details and thermal behaviour of wall-window’s joints12FEM Thermal Analysisanalisi termiche agli elementi finiti su nodi costruttivi di serramenti e comportamento termico dei nodi muratura-serramento

year: 2010 - 2012

During two years I experienced a great number of FEM thermal analysis about

window systems and window details. The work focused on wooden framed window and included in particular two dfferent study levels.

The first phase was the analysis of window’s constructive joints, referring

at different models of products and distinguishing them by thickness. These parts of calculation were aimed to define the U-values (Thermal Transmittance) of each joint, following the instructions contained in the international standard ISO 10077-2.

Another important result of this first part of the study was the definition of

surfaces’ temperature along the outside and inside part of wooden profiles: this values allowed to define the temperature’s trend into the single sections and to predict which parts of profiles were weaker to thermal differences.

Finally this study led to improve each product by substituting some

components and by enhancing those elements that already had good performances.

Wall w

architecture + engineering

The second part of my work consisted in studying the thermal behaviour of wooden windows

installed in different typologies of insulated walls.

In particular the attention was focused on two kind of walls: one with external insulation and

one with running insulation between two brick layers.

Windows have been placed in different positions to compare the variation of

temperatures' flow due to this changes. The joints are always composed by a counterframe that links insulation layers and windows' profiles.

From this analysis emerged that the best performances have been found when the

plane of window is more aligned with that one of insulation: in this case the temperature's flow is subjected to lower bend and the internal surface of the structure can maitain an higher value of temperature. As this alignment is lost the temperature's flow appears more and more bended and the internal surface's temperatures lowers: this fact reduces the performances of the joint between wall and window and, in certain cases when the insulation layer isn't in direct touch with window, can cause moisture and moulds, with all relating problems of air quality inside the buildings.
