The initial site study of Kentville proved to be very influential in the design of this library. Crutial patterns and issues were referenced with the proposed design including most importantly a re-established relationship with the Cornwallis River. The srategy consisted of an elongated plan that proposed a walk along the river. The lower level consisted of the more social spaces which was then blanketed with an urban greenspace, something that was also absent in the town. The plan was then punctured with reading towers which provide quite space for individual or group study.

The high level of resolution in the project was only reached through the collaborative efforts of the group members. The opportunity to work in groups for design work in academia can be a contentious issue depending on how a group will interact. In this instance we all complemented each other. We had simi-lar ideas about what the library should be and worked towards those goals for the entire term with only short, but meaningful debates along the way. Thanks to Michael and Marcos for the experience.

TOWER VENTILATION

The three reading towers are crutial compo-nents to the buildings environmental perfor-mance. They are glazed on the southern facade which allows them to scoop light down into the lower social spaces. As well via the stack affect they provide natural ventilation through operable panels on their ceilings.

This idea of the primitive hut was examined in this project to show what that might mean today. In this scheme the fire is central and the two ends of the building flex up reducing the buildings impact on its site. The program consists of a place for sleep, fire, reading and gazing. The structural system was of timber with rigid steel joints to keep the building lite. As the brief dictated no site, the design is meant to be universal, able to be used for emergency shelter or small rental cottages.

This group design-build project was about drawing attention to an existing film school in Halifax. The final design manipu-lated the idea of a projection booth. Usually isolated from the eyes of the viewer the projectionist and his equipment remain a magical mystery. In this small cinema a 16mm projector rests at the feet of the viewers just below the screen, images are projected over the viewer’s heads off a mirror and then back to the screen. This gives a tactile relationship between the source and the final image, educating viewers in the process.

The strict nature of the dance studios described in the project brief lead to a building that was about the dynamics between them. A spatially dynamic relationship was created between the studios within the building both sectionally and in plan. The program is then wrapped with a fabric skin, which creates a luminous beacon at night while also performing important en-vironmental tasks such as, UV protection. Some of the studios as well as the main performance hall reach outside the super-structure and press against the skin marking their importance.

While working at KPMB I worked on this pavilion-tower addition to Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. This 1982 performance hall by Arthur Erick-son rests in the heart of the entertainment district and represents an important landmark and social venue for the entire city. The additions consisted of a renovation to the King St. plaza, with new furnishing and a photovoltaic double glazed-glass canopy. The other, a Tower on the south side of the site which will house a new jazz performance space as well as offices. A series of study models were produced to to help refine the shape of the tower and show the proposed strategy in its context.

This winning competition entry for the new Toronto Transit Commission headquarters consisted of a low sleek sculptural design that opened up to reveal a glazed courtyard oriented towards a river. All images used to present the concept were created during my time there. I also produced elevation studies that played with how light entered the space on the south side. Two models were also produced one digital and one physical to show the conceptual idea and the overall concept.

This awarded proposal to design the new Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa was a project that I worked on solely with KPMB principal Tom Payne. I was given freedom to produce study models of what the project might be as well as diagrammatic renderings that showed how some spaces might develop. The level of responsibility that I was given with this project was very motivating and allowed me to hone my design skills.

The concept of this project is two lower service boxes that support an upper sleeping box. A high level of refinement was reached through studying the project at the three scales of city, building and detail. Each level of refinement was designed to strengthen the concept, for example the details between the upper and lower boxes, which enhance the idea of stacking. The procession through the building was orchestrated to with-hold and reveal views of the Atlantic Ocean.

MARITIMEpavilion

Located on the Halifax waterfront this pavilion was to be an an-nex exhibition space for the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. The program consisted of a exhibition hall, boat building shed and a viewing platform for the Bluenose II. The intent was to play off the vernacular buildings of Nova Scotia both in terms of siting and construction while presenting a new contemporary form to frame and enhance this important public space.

Taking quos from Laugier’s primitive hut a clear and simple es-say using the elements of floor, wall and roof was the outcome of this early design project. Consisting of an elongated plan that steps up to elevate the act of sleeping. As well, the ceiling height gets progressively lower to intensify the feeling of inti-macy in the more private spaces. The plan is hung off a central fire which provides a place for heat, cooking and gathering. The light frame construction is ancored by the stone fireplace.
