honoring traditions. inspiring imaginations. At Architectural Traditions, we’re not simply building a
window or door, we’re embracing time-honored architectural
traditions. We’re not merely forging a door knob, we’re
enhancing the authenticity of your home. Our heritage goes
back to the early ’80s, when our founders began building
estates and custom homes that authentically reflected our
community’s Southwestern architectural heritage—down to
the last detail.
Today, we’ve grown into one of the largest nationally-
recognized custom millwork and hardware manufacturers in
the country. And our award-winning designs remain true to
every regional architectural style—whether it’s Country,
Tudor, Tuscan, Southwestern, Mediterranean, or Craftsman.
By capturing that timeless, crafted Old World feel, your home
not only reflects your imagination, it evokes a feeling of
quality and authenticity that is rare and unparalleled in
today’s modern world.
At Architectural Traditions our materials are classic, natural,
premium quality: wood, bronze and iron. Every element—
from windows and doors to hardware—is created with a
consistently beautiful look that only a single-source supplier
like Architectural Traditions can offer. Though our wood
comes from all across the country, every piece is processed
in-house because our dry Southwest climate is perfectly
suited for millwork operations, creating a look that none
can match.
Whether you’re building a small cabin in the woods or a
spacious estate by the ocean, Architectural Traditions has the
resources, expertise and commitment to quality that will
bring your ideas to life; now, and long into the future.
Take a look through our brochure. Choose, create and use it
not merely as a guide, but as an inspiration as well!
sophisticated, strong, sensible wood
At Architectural Traditions, we realize every piece of natural wood is as beautiful as it is practical, which is exactly why it’s our choice in
creating the most distinctive homes. From Mahogany and Alder to Fir, Rustic Oak, Cedar, Walnut and Cherry, every species has a distinct
feel and wonderful personality. Like a fingerprint, you will never find two pieces of wood that are exactly the same, and no other material
that captures its special texture, elegance and charm. Wood’s artful form is matched by its superb functionality. Capable of being shaped,
molded and textured to fit a variety of architectural needs, wood is highly versatile. What’s more, wood is a natural insulator, protecting
your home from outside elements. And it’s exceptionally durable, growing even more beautiful over time, in varying weather conditions.
Perhaps most importantly, wood is a naturally renewable resource, making it an environmentally aware choice. And Architectural
Traditions’ commitment to our environment means we obtain wood only from responsibly managed forests. Whether your project requires
an exterior or an interior application, we can help you select the right species and finish for your doors and window that are stunning in
the present, and grow even more distinctive over time.

Doors A door can exude feelings of the time-worn, rustic American West; it can capture the
magnificent elegance and sophistication of a Southern estate; or it can evoke the mystery
and grandeur of an opulent Chinese Palace. Whether it’s an interior, exterior or side door,
every door opens up a world of possibilities. At Architectural Traditions, we help you
create a quality, crafted door that reflects your personal style and taste, and that fulfills
practical requirements of privacy, security and comfort as well. Cross the threshold and
discover the door that says ‘you’.
Door Form meets FUNct IoN
Exterior doors and entry systems can make a bold and
impactful first impression that reflects your tastes and
compliments your architectural environment. What’s more,
these doors fulfill an important functional role by protecting
your home from the environment, providing privacy and
insuring security. Whether it’s an entrance door and a transom,
or paired with sidelites, French or ‘patio’ doors offer wonderful
flexibility and versatility as well.
Feature door systems, such as Operating Sidelite Systems,
Surround Systems and Sliding Door Systems allow you to tailor
the door configurations dependent upon your practical needs
and design preferences.
Because they’re not exposed to the elements, interior doors
are available in virtually every species, texture and finish–in
a variety of styles—to compliment your exterior doors and color
palette as well as the architecture of your interior space.
All-Panel and All-Glass Combinations allow you to experiment
with various glass and panel combinations to create a more
open or more private feeling door. Door tops allow you to create
the door shape that suits your unique style and compliments
your environment, whether you prefer the simple lines of
a square top, or the graceful elegance of an arch. Our custom
door top shapes such as flat arch, true arch, and elliptical arch,
invite you to play with possibilities and lines of your space.
Many of our doors feature a wide spectrum of glass options
to create a more refreshing, bright feel.

Choose the panel profile and sticking option that suits your style by determining
the lines and dimensions of your door, and giving it a truly customized look.
A Mission sticking with a raised panel offers a more elegant Southwest feel;
while a classic sticking with a plank panel can exude a more rustic, simple
tone; glass, in place of wood panels, or a combination of wood and glass creates
a completely different feel that invites the outside in, while still insuring privacy.

the wooD that works
At Architectural Traditions, we offer a selection of more than nine spectacular
wood species from around the world. Each one is individual, with no other
one like it on earth, able to capture an equally distinctive look: from the
refined Classic elegance of a deep mahogany, or a more rustic Country feel of
a knotty Alder. Extreme heat, constant moisture, fluctuations in snow and
sun, and ocean breezes will impact your wood choice as well. While virtually
all wood species are appropriate for interior applications, we recommend
our ‘exposure protected’ application for long-term durability and minimal
maintenance of all our exterior doors. Cedar and Mahogany are some lovely
wood species that are most appropriate in the most severe climates.

FINIsh w Ith style
At Architectural Traditions, we offer a spectrum of standard and
customized finishes to enhance the patina and grain patterns, and bring
your door to life. Using traditional Old World methods, our skilled
artisans can also create a rubbed oil finish that unleashes the radiant
luster of the wood, creating a wonderfully authentic look and protecting
it from long-term environmental effects. Unique to Architectural
Traditions, any of our finishes can have a “glaze” added to add
dimension and highlights to your door. Create a weathered, rugged,
antique or refined look with our selection of 14 distress textures.

A charming speakeasy, a sparkling glass inset or an
Old World wood inlay can emphasize the rich character
and history of your door. They are the accents that
make your statement truly unique.

When it comes to creating a weather-tight seal and maximizing security, nothing compares to our multi-point lock, which is why we recommend it for all French doors. With coast rated stainless steel mechanisms, this lock features ‘one motion’ operation, so doors unlock and open from inside—with one simple downward push on the lever. Beveled hook latches pull the door closed and interlock it to the jamb for a tight, firm seal. Backsets are available in standard 60 mm (2⅜") and optional 45 mm and 35 mm. Features an adjustable strike plate, and a variety of trim options (see p. 83).

single / paired radius top doors
Any of our door designs
can be manufactured with
a radius top. Choose from
standard flat or true-arch
tops or more custom Gothic
or elliptical-arch tops.
top -ra Il arch pa Ir (commoN -arch )
When the doors are to be paired together, many individuals actually want a common arch—one that incorporates both doors into one arch rather than featuring a separate arch on each door. Please note doors will come without a common arch unless you specifically request one. (Note: on most door designs only top rail will be arched.)
top -ra Il arch top
A top rail with a squared top edge and an inside radius bottom edge. The radius of a top-rail arch varies depending upon the width of the door, but the distance between the high point of the radius and the top edge of the rail will always be the same width as the stile.
goth Ic -arch top
A narrow, pointed opening is the hallmark of a Gothic arch. The Gothic arch developed as a more sinuous and elegant successor to the Roman arch and was widely used in cathedrals of the Middle Ages such as Notre Dame in Paris.
two IND Iv IDUal top -ra Il arches
If two top-rail arch doors are ordered, each will come with a standard single door top rail arch as shown above.
Flat-arch top
An arch that begins at the top of the door and is considerably less rounded than a true-arch top. The top is curved in a radius equal to the width of the door; for example, a Flat-Arch Top door having a width of 3 feet would have a top rail outside radius of 36 inches. Elliptical arches have two distinct radii; a gentle radius in the center with a tighter radius in the corners. This style of arch is often associated with bringing an elegant and lavish feel to a home.
trUe -arch top
An arch that is truly rounded on top, with no angles. The top is curved in a radius equal to half the width of the door; for example, a true-arch top door having a width of 3 feet would have a top rail outside radius of 18 inches.

Finishes, species & textures The time-worn, rugged charm of the Wild West? The rich, Old World grandeur of
Europe? Or the polished elegance of a more modern time and place? The wood species,
finish and textures you select for your door capture a distinctive feel and look, while
enhancing its durability. At Architectural Traditions, we continue to use these traditional,
time-intensive processes to uncover the most unique characteristics in your wood and
design a door that is unparalleled. Step into your own style with Architectural Traditions.
glazing process
We’ve refined our Finishing process by creating color solutions and natural glazing tones to highlight the
beauty of the grain, its unique luster, and to add depth and dimension to your door’s design. Glazing can
be added to any of our standard finish colors. This process subtly highlights the mouldings and panel
profiles and artfully emphasizes any distresses.
standard “glaze”
finishing process
Nothing compares to the warm,
smooth, silky glow of natural wood.
It’s inviting to the eye and pleasing
to the touch. We’ve spent years
perfecting our exclusive Rubbed-Oil
Finish System to bring out the
patina and richness of every piece
of wood. Based on a practice that’s
been used by expert artisans for
centuries, this is a time-intensive
process that simply can’t be rushed
by modern methods. Over the
course of five to ten days, we apply
multiple coats of oils, color
solutions and sealers, allowing each
to penetrate the wood. This infusion
of finish materials creates a look
that not only reveals the wood’s
radiance, it strengthens and
protects it. With this process, there
is no surface film to crack, peel or
blotch. Our finishing process also
insures easy maintenance.

i ncense cedarWireBrushed Native to California, southwestern Oregon, and western Nevada, Incense Cedar is exceptionally resistant to environmental deterioration, with an innate strength that makes it split-, bow-, warp- and cup- resistant. No wonder it has been used for centuries in demanding applications such as fencing, patio decks and siding. But, Incense Cedar’s remarkable range of refreshing pastel colors makes it a beautiful and bold chameleon when it comes to doors as well. With so many interesting color variations, Incense Cedar allows you to achieve hues and looks unsurpassed by other species. For a rough, rustic surface, with minimal maintenance, choose our Wirebrushed texture.

species and finishes
Whether you want the ruggedly
handsome feel of Incense Cedar or
the rich and elegant style of
Mahogany, the wood you choose
will determine how your door
looks, and lasts over time.
At Architectural Traditions, we are
proud of the fact that each piece
we produce is unique. In fact, we
consider knots, raised grain
highlights and other details to be
beautiful attributes that highlight
the rare, handcrafted beauty of our
products. You can enhance and
emphasize the special beauty of
wood with finishes in both custom
and standard tones, such as Burnt
Caramel, Glazed Red Mahogany, or
Burnt Mocha. Or select from our
unique surface textures and
distresses, such as European
Distress, Antique Distress and
more, to add character and
authenticity to your doors.

Strong, moderately heavy and hard, this wood has a consistently high quality grain, color and width. Thin gum pockets and cluster knots are common, along with random streaks of blond sapwood. These characteristics , which add distinctiveness, are even more frequent in our Character Cherry.

Our Character Walnut offers larger and more frequent knots, some of which are filled with black epoxy to eliminate light penetration through the wood. Over time, Walnut develops a lustrous patina. What’s more it is heavy, hard, strong, and extremely shock resistant, making it suitable for many applications and finishes.

Featuring small, random indentations throughout the surface, along with randomly worn, rolled edges on a smoother, polished surface, European Distress captures a look that is Old World and refined in one, and that complements virtually every architectural style.
WireBrushed
Available only on Cedar, this time-honored technique brings vibrance and energy to the wood by duplicating the natural weathering process to accentuate the wood pattern and grain. Standard with our Cedar wood, Wirebrushing requires less maintenance than our Sanded textures. Its rough, rustic durability is both charming and reminiscent of an older time.

At Architectural Traditions,
we’ve designed one of the
few Double Hung windows
available today that is crafted
completely of wood—and
combined it with state-of-the-
art engineering. The result?
A charming window, reminiscent
of an older time, where both top
and bottom sashes operate
seamlessly, and the balances
system is concealed entirely in
the sash. In our Single-Hung
version, one sash is fixed and
the other moves. Both capture
an authenticity—and
originality—rarely seen in
today’s modern era.

i ncense cedar w ireBrushed
Native to California, southwestern Oregon, and western Nevada, Incense Cedar is exceptionally resistant to environmental deterioration, with an innate strength that makes it split-, bow-, warp- and cup-resistant. No wonder it has been used for centuries in demanding applications such as fencing, patio decks and siding. But, Incense Cedar’s remarkable range of refreshing pastel colors makes it a beautiful and bold chameleon when it comes to windows as well. With so many interesting color variations, Incense Cedar allows you to achieve hues and looks unsurpassed by other species. For a rough, rustic surface, with minimal maintenance, choose our Wirebrushed texture.
At Architectural Traditions, we
offer a variety of woods and
finishes—from the very refined
to the more casual and rustic.
If you choose, these finishes can
be split so that your interior
windows can project a more
refined, furniture-quality look
while your exterior windows
can complement the exterior
architecture of your house, and
reduce your maintenance.
Double the personality of
your home – inside and out.
Mahogany
One of the most stable hardwoods, Mahogany varies in color from yellowish and pinkish tones to reddish brown. Irregularities in its rich grain can create distinctively attractive figures, giving Mahogany a beautiful feel, full of lovely surprises and discoveries. What’s more, Mahogany polishes to a high luster, making it a favorite among many.
vert ical gra in douglas f ir
The inner beauty of Douglas Fir, including its exceptional stability and strength, is matched only by its outer beauty: a tight-knotted, close- grained pattern combined with a light rosey color that darkens to a spectacular, rich red-brown color over time. At Architectural Traditions, we recommend Clear Vertical Grain Douglas Fir, the highest quality grade available, because it responds so beautifully to the hands of the expert craftsman as well as virtually any finishing process. In fact, nothing matches the smooth glossy tone reflective of Vertical Grain Douglas Fir.
i ncense cedar sanded
With a more refined, polished look than Wirebrushed Cedar, Sanded Incense Cedar has a beautiful rhythm with unique fluctuations and distinct variations in color and grain. Sanded Incense Cedar is an elegant wood choice that offers endless possibilities and imaginative looks.

At Architectural Traditions, our textures highlight the wood grain, their unique patterns and personalities.
Generally, more grain will convey a more rustic look; and less grain will capture a more refined style.
Choose one texture and finish for both sides of your window, or split your look with a different style on each side.
exter ior v iew
inter ior v iew
In keeping with Architectural Traditions' primary goal, which is to help you design your own individual
look, we offer a variety of surface textures and prefinishes. Depending on your design and maintenance
requirements, we can offer our windows with a single texture and finish color, or we can split the texture
on the interior and exterior as well as split the finish color on each side. From a design point of view, a
wirebrushed Incense Cedar texture has a slightly more rustic appearance, which complements the exterior
elevation of many houses. With this texture, the finish maintenance required is less than on a sanded
surface. But on a the interior of the house, you may want a more refined, furniture-quality look for your
windows. This can be achieved through a sanded or Santa Barbara distress and perhaps a different stain
color. The end result: one window with two very different looks on the interior and exterior.

sanded
Sanded textures, standard on Mahogany and Vertical Grain Fir, and also available on Incense Cedar, create a smoother, more polished surface that flatters the grain and emphasizes the natural beauty of the wood. It’s a more formal and sophisticated look that’s highly versatile as well.
wireBrushed, regular d istress
Featuring top impressions with scratches, wormholes and small nicks and gouges, Regular Distress gives an authentically weathered look to your door’s surface. It’s a bold look perfect for Arts & Crafts, Prairie style and Modern Country.
santa BarBara d istress
Chiseld, scraped and sanded with light impressions, Santa Barbara Distress captures a naturally worn feel, best on Incense Cedar with a glazed finish.

This time-honored technique brings vibrance and energy to the wood by accentuating the grain patterns. Standard with our Incense Cedar, Wirebrushing requires less maintenance than our Sanded textures. Its rough, rustic, knotty look is both charming and reminiscent of an older time.

Measuring the resistance of heat transfer through glass, R-Values indicate how well a glazing system insulates: the higher the number, the better the insulation. Solar Heat Gain compares our glazing system to that of an unobstructed opening. And UV Transmittance measures the UV radiated wavelengths transmitted through the glazing system. Architectural Traditions windows were evaluated in full compliance with NFRC requirements to the standards listed below.

warranty information / care & maintenance
At Architectural Traditions, we take pride in the structural integrity of our products. The design and construction of our products utilizes innate characteristics of the materials to enhance their appearance and set us apart from the rest of the industry. Certain cosmetic details unrelated to structural integrity that are considered defects in the usual applications of the materials are used purposely in Architectural Traditions products and add considerably to their beauty and desirability. When ordering Architectural Traditions product, it is important to understand that dissatisfaction with cosmetic details such as size and frequency of knots, variations in the color, texture and grain pattern of wood, slight differences in the patinas on hardware products and their tendency to wear more where they are used heavily are subjective determinations not covered under warranty.
L IM ITED DOOR WARRANTY
Subject to the conditions and restrictions listed below, all stile-and-rail doors manufactured by Architectural Traditions meet or exceed industry standards and are warranted for one year from the date of shipment to be free from defects in material and workmanship.
WARp DAMAgE
Claims due to warp may be deferred for up to 12 months from the date of the claim in order to allow the door the opportunity to return to its original form once it has acclimated to local humidity and temperature conditions. The deferral will not be counted against the warranty period.
Warp shall not be considered a defect unless it exceeds ¼" in the plane of the door. Warp is measured by placing a straight edge or a taut string on the concave face of the door and determine the maximum distance from the straight edge or string to the door face. This warranty is only valid when the door is properly hung, finished, and is sealed on all six surfaces. In order to be covered by the warranty, warp must occur in the door itself, and not be the result of an improperly installed jamb or a wall out of plumb.

Insulated glass: Architectural Traditions, as the manufacturer, warrants all insulated glass delivered to the original customer or its authorized dealer against failure of the air seal for a period of five (5) years. Texture and color variations in the wood, as well as surface checking and other natural aging processes of the wood fiber, do not constitute defects. Slight expansion and contraction of the wood due to differences in temperature and humidity are also not defects.
It is the responsibility of the customer to properly maintain the finish of all products against moisture or excessive dryness, and to see to it that all surfaces, whether finished by Architectural Traditions or by the customer, remain adequately sealed. If water sprayed onto the wood beads up and runs off, the wood is properly sealed. If water penetrates the wood, the window is not properly sealed and this warranty does not apply.
In addition, there is no coverage under these warranties for installation beyond our printed labor schedule, repainting or refinishing, or other expenses or costs incurred due to the replacement of glass. Furthermore, this warranty does not cover loss of time or inconvenience, nor does it cover delays or construction costs for late or damaged delivery or incidental or consequential damages.
This is a pro-rated warranty: see Architectural Traditions Limited Glass Warranty Schedule for specifics.

HARDWARE WARRANTYL IM ITED WARRANTY
Architectural Traditions warrants goods sold against defects in workmanship or materials for a period of one (1) year from the original invoice date. This warranty is limited to repair or replacement of those goods. Architectural Traditions is not responsible for any damage caused by mishandling, tampering, or abuse, improper installation, or any events outside the control of Architectural Traditions. Architectural Traditions will pay reasonable freight charges, but otherwise is not responsible for any incidental or consequential damages including, but not limited to, the payment of any labor costs or other expenses incurred in the return or replacement of defective merchandise.
Architectural Traditions extends a lifetime limited mechanical warranty for its tubular dead bolt latch, passage latch, and privacy latch. This warranty shall be for manufacturing defects only, for products used in private residences.
In addition, Architectural Traditions will extend a 20 year limited warranty on its mortise box when used in a private residence. A one-year limited warranty applies to mortise boxes used in a commercial setting. This mortise box limited warranty shall apply manufacturing defects only; it does not apply to improper installation or any other forms of abuse.
A NOTE AbOuT f IN IsHEs
Finishes on iron-based products are susceptible to rust. While we apply several coats of high-quality lacquer to our iron-based parts, the frequency of use and the environment the hardware is used in will eventually result in wear on the finish and/or the appearance of rust. This is considered to be a part of the normal evolution of the finish and is not a defect. Wiping the hardware with a cloth treated with a light oil, such as sewing machine oil or gun oil will clean the hardware, help control rust, and give it a rejuvenated appearance.
Patina finishes on our bronze and brass hardware are a “living” finish – that is, they change with time and use. The finishes may rub off where they are used frequently and darken where they are not. This is not considered to be a defect. These parts may also be wiped with a soft cloth and a light oil to clean the hardware and enhance appearance.

L IM ITAT ION Of WARRANTY
This warranty sets forth Architectural Traditions’ maximum liability for its products. Architectural Traditions makes no other warranty, expressed or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose with respect to its products except as set forth above. No customer, distributor, sales person, dealer or other representative has the authority to alter these warranties either orally or in writing. Architectural Traditions shall not be responsible for indirect, consequential or incidental damages, unless state law excludes limitation or exclusion of incidental or consequential damages.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights, which vary from state to state. In the event that state law prohibits the exclusion or limitation of implied warranties, the duration of any such warranties shall be no longer than, and the time and manner of presenting a claim shall be the same as, that provided in the express warranty stated herein.
sHORTAgEs AND/OR DEfEcT IvE MERcHAND IsE
If your order has an apparent shortage, you must contact your distributor, dealer or Architectural Traditions Customer Service Department within five (5) days after receipt of your order.
Defective merchandise must be reported within thirty (30) days of receipt of your order. Defective products must be held by the customer for inspection. Merchandise which has been disposed of will not be considered for claims. Architectural Traditions must approve all returns and transportation of defective merchandise in writing.
These warranties do no apply to product shipped outside the continental United States, Hawaii or Canada.
We strive to match finishes within a given order, but parts ordered at a later date will not match the original pieces. They should age to match, but it will take a period of time.
Since bronze does not rust, it is recommended for use in particularly damp environments where iron-based parts might rust severely. Iron-based pieces are not warranted against rust.

Your Architectural Traditions doors and windows have been manufactured to last for years, but as with any piece of fine furniture, the finish will require some simple periodic maintenance to keep it looking its best and to provide protection from the elements. Regular finish maintenance is also a requirement of the warranty. We recommend that you maintain wood products exposed to exterior environments annually. If your doors or windows receive a lot of moisture or direct sunlight (Southern and Western exposures, for example), you will want to examine the finish often. Watch for drying and fading, and plan your maintenance accordingly.
To maintain your Architectural Traditions Rubbed-Oil finish, simply clean the wood and remove mold or fungus, if necessary. Cleaning the wood may be as simple rubbing steel wool across the surface of the door (exterior only). Start with medium-coarse and finish by buffing with fine density. More extensive cleaning may include the use of deck cleaners, or one part household bleach to three parts water.
After you have cleaned the door or window, simply apply a coat of wood oil, with or without color. We use oil by Cabot or Watco, both of which are available in “Natural Oil.” Apply the oil with a brush then finish by thoroughly wiping the door or window with a clean cotton rag. Apply several coats if necessary. The oil will bring back the rich color in the wood.
MA INTA IN INg ARcH ITEcTuRAL TRAD IT IONs ’ TOp cOAT f IN IsH
If you have ordered a top coat finish, inspect the finish annually (more under extreme conditions) and if maintenance is needed, lightly sand the surface and reapply two coats of oil-based exterior polyurethane.
f IN IsH RAW WOOD
It is imperative that the finish you apply fit the exposure expected for your particular application. Extreme exposure or inclement conditions beyond the norm require special attention. Before sealing your door or window, you must follow the instructions below, regardless of type of stain.
With the first two years of the warranty period, our general policy is that a sash with more than 3 failed lites will be entirely replaced with the dealer doing installation. Lites bigger than 12 sq ft., the dealer would provide the glass. This is due to the difficulty of shipping large pieces of glass and the high rate of breakage. The final 8 years of warranty, where labor is not applicable, Architectural Traditions will supply the glass and charge the prorated difference to the dealer, or will issue the appropriate credit when dealer supplies glass.
Every effort will be made to supply glass similar to what originally supplied, but Architectural Traditions makes no guarantees that the glass will match exactly.

For wirebrushed surfaces, sand your door with 80 or 100 grit sandpaper to achieve desired grain texture, remove rough areas, and eliminate splinters. (CAUTION: Oversanding will eliminate wirebrushed texture.) Rub door or window vigorously with medium coarse steel wool approximately 7-10 minutes per side or until all edges are rounded and flat surfaces are slick.
For sanded (smooth) surfaces, you must sand door or window thoroughly starting with 120 grit and finishing with 220 grit. Failure to do so may show inconsistencies in your stain, particularly when using lacquer or varnish top coats.
Our warranty requires that you immediately seal all exposed wood, including all mortised and drilled areas, with at least two full coats of sealer or primer. After it is sealed, let the door acclimatize to the environment before putting the finish coats on the product.
There are two ways to finish raw wood, regardless of whether it’s been stained to change the color or it is left natural. The first is with a series of penetrating oils that toughen the wood fiber as they build up after consecutive coats. The second is with a shell-like paint, urethane, or varnish as a protective top coat. There are advantages to both methods: consult your paint professional to determine which finish best suits your particular needs.
MA INTENANcE AND REpA IRs
At least annually, examine your doors and windows for signs of damage or deterioration. Scratches or dings can be repaired using a cotton swab dampened with wood stain. Remove as much excess stain as possible by dabbing the cotton swab on a clean cloth before touching up the door (this ensures an even color tone). Check periodically to see if the exterior sealants exhibit any gaps, leaks or signs of damage or deterioration, and if so, apply a quality exterior caulking to these areas.
