Featuresand Benefits

A Complete Line of ConvectorsTrane architectural radiation convectorsare ideal for heating small areas inmodern commercial, institutional orindustrial buildings. These areas includeoffices, apartments, entrances andrestrooms. There are wall-hung, floor-standing, semi-recessed andfully-recessed models.

Available for hydronic or steam heating,Trane convectors can be used incombination with wall fin to allow theuse of one source when designing aradiation heating system. (See FIN-PRC004-EN for wall fin applications.) Aconsistent cabinet design matches wallfin enclosures. The linear styling blendswell with virtually every architecturaldesign.

Convectors are an effective heating system for small areas. The attractive stylingblends with an architectural design.

Channelized hinge mounting permitsthe front panel to be raised for easyservice and cleaning.

Quick-opening fasteners make it easy toopen the front panel.

Panel Construction FeaturesThe front panel is constructed of 14 or16-gauge steel. Channelized hingedmounting and quick-opening fastenersmake it easier to open and raise the frontpanel for cleaning and servicing. Thebottom edge of the panel is rolled backso it is less likely to be dented.

Units can be installed before the wallsare plastered. In fact, the mountingchannel of a unit can serve as a plasterstop.

The element floats freely on a steelsupport assembly, allowing forexpansion and contraction.

Access doors are available.

The front panel swings up for easy access.

Wall-Hung ConvectorsThese units keep floor or carpeting freeof dust-gathering corners. They areavailable in front outlet, sloping topoutlet and extruded grille top outletstyles.

Recessed ConvectorsRecessed units take heating equipmentcompletely out of the room. With frontsfinished to blend smoothly with wallsurfaces, semi-recessed and fully-recessed units provide uninterruptedcompatibility with modern interiors.

Floor-Mounted ConvectorsA floor model is available in the sameoutlet styles as the wall-hung model. Itcan also be ordered with integral inletgrilles which help protect the unitinterior. The front panel can be removedeasily to simplify cleaning.

Durable Heating Elements

3-Position Hanger

Vent Plug

Positive Temperature ControlAn efficient damper is mounted on theelement. The damper reduces unitcapacity by 70 percent. The bead chaincontrol system is jam-resistant. Thecontrol knob is mounted on the outletgrille.

Only the brass headers rest on endbracket tabs of the support assembly. The element assembly floats freelyduring expansion and contraction, relieving the fin-tube portion of anystrain. Support assembly expansion andcontraction is absorbed by verticalbrackets. There is no direct contact withthe cabinet and end panels allowingmaximum heat transfer to be achieved.

A rugged mechanical fin-tube bondhelps assure durability and long life. Die-formed aluminum fins are mechanicallybonded to copper tubes. The tubes arealso mechanically bonded to brassheaders with the ends rolled back in aboiler tube style.

Hot Water SystemsThe rating of convectors in a hot watersystem is determined by average watertemperature, temperature drop and inletair temperature. Tables PD-7 through PD-30 contain Trane convector ratings at 10,20 and 30°F temperature drops andaverage water temperatures with 65°Fentering air temperature.

Steam SystemsThe rating of convectors in a steamsystem is determined by steam pressureand entering air temperature. Tables PD3through PD6 contain Trane convectorratings with 1 psi steam and 65°Fentering air temperature. Refer to TablePAF-2 for steam correction factors aboveone-pound gauge.

All ratings are in accordance withprovisions of Commercial Standard CS140-47.

Ratings at Other Than StandardConditionsUse the following formula to determineoutput:

Cs = [ ts- ti

] 1.5

HO = Hs x Cs

215-65

This is an exponent to the 1.5 power perIBR correction factors whereCs = Correction factorts = Steam temperature at operating

SelectionProcedure

Heating EffectConvector capacity ratings in this catalogrepresent condensation capacityincreased by the percentages shown inTable PAF-3. This is in accordance withprovisions of Commercial Standard CS140-47.

Rating of Units Longer and Higher ThanStandardRating of units longer than standard isdetermined by extrapolating frompublished rating tables. Ratings for unitsabove 38-inches high are about fivepercent higher than the highest standardconvector.

Effect of Grilles on RatingsShown in Table PAF-4.

Two Elements in a CabinetThe rating of a standard convector is notmaterially increased by placing twoelements, one above the other, in acabinet.

Conversion FactorsBtu to EDR Table PAF-5 permits selectionof convectors for hot water systemsdirectly from steam rating tables afterheat losses have been calculated in Btu.For example, assume a forced hot watersystem with room heat loss of 8,000 Btu.The average water temperature is 190°Fat 20°F temperature drop. From TablePAF-5 the Btu per square foot of steamcapacity is 160. Dividing 8,000 by 160equals 50 square feet EDR. The requiredconvector can then be selected from thesteam rating table.

Chart PD-1 — Gallons Per Minute of Hot Water Required Chart PD-2 — Gallons Per Minute for Various MBh and

Temperature Drops

Chart PD-1 can be used to determine theapproximate gpm required for thedesired MBh with various watertemperature drops. The example shownbelow may also be used to determinegpm.

Example18.1 MBh10°F temperature drop0.206 Factor from formula18.1 x .206 = 3.73 GPM

GPM = BTU *500 x Water Temperature Drop

*The weight of a U.S. gallon of water at60°F is 8.33 pounds. At a flow rate of 1U.S. gpm, the weight of the watercirculated through the system in onehour is 1.0 x 8.33 multiplied by 60minutes = 500 pounds.

Chart PD-2 may be used to approximatethe gpm required for various MBh andtemperature drops.
