graduate student projectLocated in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, The Shadow

House is the culmination of a year researching the “hu-

man shadow” and how that can lead to an architectural

creation. With different transparencies, programmatic

material alignments, topographic reactions, and spatial

sequencing, this project provides the rising underground

arts district a place to relax, see a concert, go to

grab a beer, or have a riotous week long block party.

Matrices _ to help understand the multiple complexities of the project, quick sketches in a categorized grid

unveil relevant truths. Because of the repetitive nature

of the exercise and the close proximity of sketches it

becomes easy to recognize major themes that are guiding

the project. By organizing them and reflecting on them

by placing a layer of trace over the top and writing

immediate reactions, hierarchies are made.

Stream of thought sketches _ get out as many ideas as possible to reflect upon later

Model making _ to uncover any relevant design ideas created from the stream of thought sketching and how they

may apply in three dimensions and can get you into the

site

Repeat _ work through viable ideas and start to apply programmatic elements and diagrams to the project

POETICS _ what is the weight of a shadow?

a quanificationCount the number of beats to your heart when you fi nd youself alone in a room full of people. That is the weight of your shadow.Rythym.

Time the speed of your mind racing though and past memories. That is the weight of your shadow.Velocity.

Gather tears, given and revieced, subtract the ones of joy from the sum. That is the weight of your shadow.Collection.

When translated, these begin to create architectural experience.

The physical and pychological weight of the shadow are summed up as follows : Rythym, Velocity, Collection

CHURCHManhattan mennonite Church

Collaborating with a partner in the landscape architecture department and with the congregation of the Mennonite Church of Manhattan, KS, a design was created to emphasize the lifestyle of the congregation, respect for the land, and make place for them to worship. The sustainable aspects of this design project began from the layout of the site using permeable parking, edible landscapes, rainwater collection, vertical shading devices, and a courtyard. Upon arriving on the site, a few things were taken inventory. One of those was that the building wanted to make a gesture to the horizon of the northwest, where the plains meet the farmland. This picturesque Kansas backdrop is the perfect place to orient the main views. In doing this we stumbled upon some interesting sustainable features. It was diffi cult to fi ght the north to south orientation of the sight. Intstead of forcing the buidling to be enlongated in the east to west direction, a courtyard was added. In doing this , it allowed for more of the building to be exposed to warm southern light in the winter, but be cooly shaded by a system of vertical fi ns and desiduous trees in the over-heated summer months.
