  • HOME OF THE KNIGHTSA GYMNASIUM AND ATHLETIC CENTER FOR THEMENLO SCHOOL. ATHERTON, CAwith Kevin Hart Architecture

    This school chose a site constrained by heritage trees, a strict height limit, and vocal residential neighbors. While the normative gymnasium typology is characterized by a static monolithic volume, this athletic center shifts volumetrically to accommodate its constraints. The result is a cinematic series of spaces intertwined in both plan and section. The buildings L-shape activates campus open spaces on two sides, while presenting a quiet face to its neighbors. The folded wooden ceiling plane turns up at the lobby drawing spectators from the center of campus into a tall daylit gallery from which they overlook and descend, arena-style, into the two gymnasiums. A long display box embedded in the exterior wall showcases memorabilia from inside and out. The southern wall of the main gym is detached and faceted to encourage novel forms of ball play and invented games in the adjacent courtyard. The gyms are naturally ventilated with air tempered by the cool earth below grade. A ground-source heat pump trans-fers heat noiselessly via a closed water loop into the earth.

    Previously, the tenants at this existing ofce building in Silicon Valley entered through a mute rear lobby off the parking lot. We proposed to relocate the lobby off the street, visible from the highway, and create a new entry sequence composed of material and programmatic layers which, read together, cre-ated a strong graphic identity.

    The Camino Nuevo Charter Academy is a college preparatory school for inner city youth with a mission to mold independent thinkers in environments of design excellence. Housing 500 students, the new high school is comprised of a long, curving building stretched out between Silverlake Boulevard and a 101 Freeway off-ramp, in the shadow of the Hollywood sign. Be-cause of the intense urban condition, it was crucial to recover pieces of urban space and create an educational haven with-out isolating the School from its neighborhood. The winding classroom wing buffers the social spaces from the busy boule-vard while the ofce and media wing anchors the main pedes-trian entrance. By single-loading the main classroom wing, we accomplished two important social and sustainable functions: direct visual connections between the classrooms and the in-ner courtyard and natural light owing into each classroom. The street edges are clad in perforated corrugated metal to dampen sound and provide glare control.

    3 Degrees of Felt takes the existing canonical space of the Guggenheim and transforms the experience with a soft, continuous material intervention. In or-der to accommodate the 450 artifacts of the Aztec Empire, we designed a single linear element that undulates to create display areas within its folds. The project creates a smooth, non-uniform display system that organizes the artifacts at their appropri-ate scale while highlighting the curatorial themes of the exhibition. Made of dark thick felt, the wall ab-sorbs both sound and light transforming the classic white interior into a deep, hushed envelope.

    Harvard wanted an easterly counterweight to their marble-clad medical school quadrangle. This counterweight was to be both mammoth, nearly doubling the laboratory space on the medical school campus, and urbanistically precise. Our site strategy was to plug-in the new public spaces to the existing greenway connecting the medical quad to the emerald neck-lace. We pulled the garden space into and through the new building along a circulation concourse that divides the struc-ture. Our architectural strategy was to heap the service-hungry and highly specialized laboratory space on the north side of the building thus freeing up the scale and character of the ameni-ties portion, including an auditorium, conference center, cafe, and courtyard. Lastly, we attempted to mediate the vertical separations between oors in the lab block by inserting voids--meeting spaces, tearooms, and gathering places. TRANSPARENT LINK

    This project proposes the synthesis of the material and the immaterial; cast and broadcast. By working with the natural topography and preserving the forest, the project uses the re-quired program to cast the natural void of the landscape. The Nam June Paik Museum creates a congealed entropic middle ground between program and site, artice and nature, art and technology. The roof becomes the performative surface of the project--a lake of light, media, motion, and infrastructure that mechanically maps and uidly compensates for the levels of electricity consumed within.

    This competition entry for a new park and pavil-ions in a New England town is based on four ob-servations and four strategies.

  • GROW THE PARK

    This spatial strategy proposes to expand the size of the park, both physically and perceptually. A low-relief, folded topography (of equal part cut and ll) actually increases the parks surface area while subtly demarcating zones of intimacy and expansiveness, of public and private experience, always with a clear visual and hydrological relationship with the canal.

  • AMPLIFY HABITAT

    A hypernatural ecological strategy aiming to create unusual concentra-tions of chosen bird species in avian neighborhoods across the park. Stri-ations of different ground cover habi-tats along one grain of the park cut across lines of varying fruit and nut-bearing trees. Specic bird species are amplied at the intersections of this grid that provide preferred food sources and nesting sites.

    This circulation strategy choreographs patterns of movement through the site according to the ve-locity of the circulation. Destination programs and amenities are both lures and landmarks along the way. A wide, arrow-straight civic promenade on the canal offers a place to stroll in a group in every season. Bird-watchers and solitude seekers can meander among the folds of the park. Bikers can move through the site unimpeded.

    This temporal strategy amounts to wearing linen after Labor Day. City of Birds proposes a park with infrastructure to engage visitors in the winter as well as the summer, in the evening as well as during the day. Responsive urban furniture greets its brave December visitor with warmth and light. The greenhouse coffee shop provides a shelter at the end of a brisk fall walk. A nursery on Main Street brings spring visitors as well as rental in-come to the village.

    The dense fog in Chongqing, combined with the prevailing particulates and pollutants, render most buildings as simple proles on the horizon, silhouettes of grey on grey. This tower design works within the limita-tions of the endemic concrete construction to create an aloof, ambiguous forms inected as it twists to capture the rare views of a distant moun-tain. The core of concrete frame and sheer walls remains constant all the way up, allowing standardized formwork. Only the pour-stops of the cantilevered slab edge are shifted each level. This extra space, outside the core, houses sun rooms and open balconies for each unit divided by thickened walls of copper louvers that conceal the individual split-system air conditioners that are ubiquitous in this area.

    Where the form inects, a warped exterior wall surface geometry results. The curvature map of the surface resultant is used to locate the open balconies on the facade. Thus, the skin appears to pull apart as it curves, allowing light and air into the desirable corners units.

  • LOOSE KNOTCOMPETITION ENTRY FOR THE NEW MADRID CON-GRESS HALL AND CONFERENCE CENTER (CICCM)with Kevin Hart Architecture

    A semi-dense programmatic solid, folded together on both vertical and horizontal axes, creates extraordinary exibility for the effective use of spaces in many different combinations. This functional knot is unied by a crystalline skin with vari-able openings creating a powerful form in scale with the ad-jacent towers. The vertical arrangement of program spaces has many advantages over the more common horizontal ar-rangement. In vertical movement, the actual walking distanc-es are shorter, and the use of escalators and elevators in the atrium/exhibition hall encourages socializing en route. Verti-cal movement of freight, food and equipment by elevator is preferred by exhibitors and operators; it is also more efcient, permitting more frequent changes of events. To facilitate way-nding, a tactile media wall folds up from the plaza to connect the primary program spaces. This chimeric and performative surface spans landscape and building to link the activities of the Center and provide directions, schedules, and graphical branding via a programmable embedded LED matrix.

  • BERKLEE DORM: A HOUSE FOR (40) MUSICIANSCritic: Carol Burns

    Berklee College of Music is a school without a campus. Bostons sidewalks, rooftops, and clubs are appropriated as institutional spaces. This projects citing seeks to clarify Berk-lees de facto institutional posture as a diffuse urban campus. The architectural organization takes cues from the rigid ag-gregate urbanism of the Back Bay. In opposition to the linear aggregation of the neighboring rowhouses, the dorm rooms aggregate densely and entropically into suites leaving loosely congured, semi-public in-between spaces that provide for a variety of activities, performance, and hybrid programs.

Embedded in the geometry is a simple set of parameters that allow the complex curvature to be approximated by paper-like, developable surfaces. We realized a non-hierarchical construction system of discreet premanufactured units which could be shop manufactured from sheet-stock of any material and snapped together on site. This unitized monosurface tapers in section to accom-modate the rigid needs of book storage as well as the exible space of the body.

    This project investigated multiplicity and malleability in a spa-tial system by created a meaningful spatial construct and de-ploying it across a site, in this case a hillside in Valparaiso. The spatial construct is a device for framing views--of the ocean, the city, and artifacts--that is deployed as a series of pavilions connected by gardens and water courses. The result is an open museum connecting the tourist high ground on the prow of a prominent hill with the new redevelopment along the waterfront. The complex mediates circulation velocities, water drainage, and tourist services.
