The 50 Most Beautiful Homes 2018110

Two houses on two one-acre plots—each responding to their specific surroundings, but united by a common aesthetic. Cast in the local vernacular, with just the required amount of structural intervention. And furnished with sweeping landscape views. Mumbai-based architectural firm SPASM Design devised two villas that were entirely in sync with their views. The one meant to come up on flat terrain was a single-storey structure enclosed by a 10-foot-tall wall in local red laterite. A veranda skirting the interiors connects the rooms and allows for movement between spaces. With a deep blue pool set at the 40-foot-wide opening, the spaces open out to a layered view—of water, the lawn and the rugged mountainous terrain. The other house, with a pool at the upper level, a pavilion-like living room and a smaller courtyard, was built around the original inhabitants of this parcel of land—its nine mango trees. The structure was built around their proportions, with the rooms weaving in and around them. Brick and terracotta are the materials of choice here, with brick jalis allowing the modulated breeze to filter through. The Twin House is a product of disparate design, united by the natural elements that dictated their proportions—land, sky, wind and water.
