3RD YEAR SPRING 2014NEW YORK CITY, NY 4
-
M.O.A.K. is a 42,000 sq. ft. museum located on 13th st. in New York City. It is dedicated and designed to house the past, present and future works of the artist Anish Kapoor. Critical ideas to think about while designing for his work were the size of the installations, how the pieces were designed to be viewed, and the dualities which the pieces either created or played off of in their surrounding environment. The project was a 10 week project which included a site visit and the study of muse-ums located throughout New York City.

In order to best display Kapoors work I defined 3 fundamental gallery types; double height galleries, this best displayed larger pieces of work which required views from different perspectives to gain an understanding of his work; corridor galler-ies, these would best display smaller wall hung pieces along with his painting; and small room galleries which would house pieces that required to be of the space.
Since each of Kapoors pieces require special attention to its surrounding envi-ronment, movable wall panels are used to set up galleries in ways which would best display the collection of pieces that are being rotated through the museum.

BLUE EARTH PARK - RENOVATION
3RD YEAR SPRING 2014MANHATTAN, KS 10

PLAN
11
Blue Earth Park is located off of 3rd street in Manhattan, KS surrounded by hotels to the east and west, a mixed use building to the south and The Discovery Center to the north. The intent of the project was to design a successful southern side to the park which is an empty lot. For the project we broke into two man teams where we worked with potential stakeholders which included owners of the surrounding build-ings and companies along with parks and recreation city officials. One of the design considerations for designing the park was creating a method for housing the weekly farmers market. After discussing with the stakeholders we came to the conclusion that the farmers tents would be best situated between the arcade of trees and along the street edge.Other design considerations for the park was a place along the southern edge which would engage the food and bever-age businesses to the south and a pavilion which could function as a place for bands to set up and a picnic shelter. The project was a 6 week project that engaged the studio to interact with poten-tial stakeholders. Although the city had no plans of renovating the south end of the park our studio convinced the city council that something needed to be done to con-nect the north and the south through the interaction of the park.

The park pavilion is located at the inter-section of 3 major circulation paths in the park. Its close proximity to the restrooms and a parking lot makes it an ideal place for hosting numerous types of events. It features a flexible design to accom-modate a large variety of functions. In everyday use the pavilion could be used as a sheltered area for picnics and small street performances. Larger events that could be hosted are movies on the green, a stage and a food and drink reception area for weddings, parties, ceremonies and conferences.

The shaded southern plaza is located on the south edge of the park. With it being in close proximity to the business-es and residents on the southern edge it is designed to be an urban oasis that separates the park from the busy street through the use of plantings and alcoves of seating areas. Its use would be to give small groups of people or individuals a place to sit and relax while enjoying food and drinks from the nearby businesses. While feeling like part of the park when your outside of the space when your in-side it feels like a more secluded space from the rest of the park.

SITE PLAN VIEW FROM PARKING

The Flint Hills Center for Craft is a 21,000 sq. ft. educational institute where resi-dents of Riley county could go to learn the skills of glass blowing, metal smithing and pottery making. The project was an 8 week long project which ended with the Bowman Design Forum competition in which I was a finalist.
-
PROGRAMMATIC ORGANIZATION
16
The program of the center is organized into 3 major components, Educational, Public and Residential. These three com-ponents are organized around the court-yard which is shared among the spaces and the corridor binds them together. The three different components are situat-ed around the courtyard to capture specif-ic views of the site and so certain parts of the center have a greater hierarchy while on approach from the street and from the parking.
-
FLOOR PLAN
17
For the 3 different crafts taught each has its own studio space, seminar room and professors office located within its own bay. The education wing also houses a library, and a gathering space. The public component houses a small art gallery to hold works of the stu-dents and the maker-in-residence, a lecture hall for public gatherings and classes, and the administrative suite. Terminating the public wing sits the maker-in-residences apart-ment with no internal connection to the center.

Cross Roads Brewery is a 14,000 sq. ft. brew pub located at 1901 Central st. in the Cross Roads district of Kansas City, MO. It functions as a brewery during the day and a pub at night. The project is a 16 week long project that is a work in progress.
-
Connecting PointThe brewing tanks act as connecting point where the pub meets the street and acts as a threshold where people filter through in order to enter the pub. Heavy walls of brick are situated to the sides of the tanks to emphasize and celebrate both the entry into the building and the brewing process.

Spatial ExtrusionParts of the program located in the heavy masses locat-ed to the sides of the brewing tanks, the laboratory and the private salon, are extruded inward into the double height volume of the pub connecting back to the brew-ing tanks and the pub below. This also allows for unique spatial opportunities below the extrusions.
