  • Born 287 B.C. in Greek colony ofSyracuse on the island of Sicily
  • Archimedes father was Phidias who was a worthy astronomer.
  • Was related by blood to King of Syracuse, Hieron II.
  • First expedition was to the city of Alexandria, Egypt
  • First invention of his was Archimedes screw pump - made while he was in Egypt
  • Spent some time in Spain to aid the Spanish during the English Maritime War.

  • Returned home started to work for Hieron II
  • Discovered volume when King Hieron II wanted to know if his crown was pure gold. Archimedes discovered solution while taking a bath from how much water overflowed the tub.
  • During second Punic war in 214BC, King Hieron II asked Archimedes to make inventions of war-machines for defense against Roman general Marcellus(second Punic War laid siege to Syracuse)

  • Archimedes claw (utilizing pulley system) a type of crane with a hook that was able to life attacking ships partly out of the water.
