INTRODUCTIONArchimedes of Syracuse was a GREEK MATHEMATICIAN

physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. He was born IN. 287 BC in the seaport city of Syracuse . Archimedes gives his father's name as Phidias, an astronomer about whom nothing is known. Archimedes died in 212 B.C. during the Second Punic war, when Syracuse was captured by the Roman forces after a two year siege.

FACTS

Discoveries and inventions by Archimedes

Archimedes has many discoveries and inventions to his credit, but he considered his theoretical work as his main triumph. Along with his inventions in mathematics and geometry, he is also known for the weapons he created for King Hiero II to help protect Syracuse. He is credited with many inventions in the field of mathematics and physics such as "Archimedes law", hydrostatics, calculus, etc.

'ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE'

Archimedes was on a mission to solve a question that was asked of him by King Hieron II of Syracuse The question that the king had asked was about his crown. Was it pure gold or partly silver? he took a bath in his bathtub. He realized that the amount of water that overflowed the tub was proportional to the amount of his body that was submerged. this principle is known as the 'Archimedes Principle

The Archimedes Screw Pump•  King Hieron II commissioned Archimedes

to design a huge naval warship, the Syracusia. It was purported to be the largest ship built in classical antiquity. Since a ship of this size would leak a considerable amount of water through the hull, the Archimedes screw was purportedly developed in the bilge water order to remove

The Archimedes Claw

The Claw of Archimedes was a ship shaker. The claw consisted of a crane-like arms from which metal the claw defends a harbor by dropping hooks onto an attacking ship and then violently shaking the ship.rappling hooks were suspended.

ARCHIMEDES' CONTRIBUTION TO MATHEMATICS

• ARCHEMEDES WAS ONE OF THE BEST MATHEMETICIAN OF ALL THE TIME. HE WAS BELIEVED TO BE THE ONE OF THE THREE GREATEST MATHEMATICIAN ALONG WITH ISSAC NEWTON AND CARL GAUSS. ARCHEMEDES BROUGHT THE SUBJECT OF MATHS TO THE THRESHOLD OF MODERN MATHEMATICAL THINKING.

CONTRIBUTIONS IN MATHS

• DISCOVERED HOW TO FIND THE VOLUME OF A SPHERE.

• A FORMULA TO FIND THE AREA UNDER A CURVE , THE AMOUNT OF SPACE THAT IS ENCLOSED BY A CURVE.

• POWER’S OF TEN:- A NUMBER WHICH TOKE AWAY THE USE OF THE GREEK ALPHABET IN THE COUNTING SYSTEM.

• IT IS BELIEVED THAT HE WAS THE ACTUALLY FIRST TO HAVE INVENTED INTEGRAL CALCULUS , 2000 YEARS BEFORE NEWTON ANDLEIBNIZ

Legacy

• There is a crater on the Moon named Archimedes in his honor.

• The asteroid 3600 Archimedes is named after him.

• Archimedes has appeared on postage stamps issued by East Germany, Greece, Italy .

• A movement for civic engagement targeting universal access to health care in the US state of Oregon has been named the "Archimedes Movement.”
