WHO IS ARCHILOCHUS? Archilochus was born approximately in 675

B.C. and died in battle about 634 B.C. He was born in the island of Paros as a

bastard. His mother was a slave woman and his father, Telesicles was an aristocrat.

Archilochus lived most of his childhood in Paros until his father, Telesicles, founded a colony named Thasos where Archilochus lived and fought for a long time.

He then left Thasos because he did not like the way he was treated by Lycambes and because of the poverty.

Archilochus was both a poet and a soldier.

WHO IS ARCHILOCHUS CONT. Most of Archilochus’ writings reflect his life

as a soldier and the needs of the community.

He based most of his poems on his personal feelings and emotions or in other words, his poems where based on his life.

He also wrote about poverty even though he was a wealthy noble.

He wrote songs that like his poems reflect his life as a soldier.

There were times were Archilochus sang to the soldiers to encourage them to fight,

ARCHILOCHUS’ LIFE CONTINUED Archilochus had a complicated love life in

which he wrote about in his poems. He wrote short and funny poems. People performed his poems in military

events or funerals. It is said that Archilochus fought against

Thracians and he died when the Thasians were fighting against the soldiers.

“It was said that a man named Lycambes betrothed his daughter Neobule to the poet and then later withdrew the plan.”-Britannica

Archilochus’ poems were also abusive to his enemies and nice for his friends.

WHY DID WE CHOOSE ARCHILOCHUS?

Archilochus is one of the best and famous Greek lyric poet like I’ve mentioned before.

We researched Archilochus and he was the one with the most amazing life story.

What is more interesting than writing about your own life story especially with music?

He also exemplifies some of the great achievements of Ancient Greece.

His poems show us how the soldier life was like back then.

They also show us what happened in some Greek communities on a daily basis.

ARCHILOCHUS’ WORK:WHAT IS LYRIC POETRY?

Lyric Poetry became famous around the Classical period and the Archaic age. This is really important to the history of Ancient Greece because it shows the type of poetry and the talents they had.

Lyric poetry is usually short and its purpose is basically to show a personal emotion or feeling.

Lyric poetry has to do a lot with music, and sometimes poets used the lyre, a musical instrument, to make their poems.

Archilochus was a famous and one of the best Greek lyric poets.

Archilochus’ WorksArchilochus’ Works This is one of Archilochus’ short poems describing

Thasos and it is translated by Willis Barnstone: “Thasos and Sicily This wheatless island stands like a

donkey's back. It bristles with a tangle of wild woodland. Oh, there is no country so beautiful, no sensual earth that keys my passion as these plains around the river Siris.”

This is another one of Archilochus’ verses about war: “Come bring your cup over the benches of this fast ship

Let's wander around drinking from the barrels of wineGulp down the red wine to the dregs- we're not going to stay sober on this shift!”

HOW DO WE REMEMBERHOW DO WE REMEMBER ARCHILOCHUS?ARCHILOCHUS?

"The Parians who made a hero of Archilochus remembered his patriotic poem and his cult songs, but the rest of the ancient world honored him primarily as a poet of abuse, the first and the best, and one whose evil tongue could kill" (Burnett 55). --Corinna Kaulback

Archilochus gets angry and seduces Hermia. Kind of goes crazy and also destroys Lycambes’ reputation.
