ReardonSmith Architects Completes New Four Seasons Hotel

in Baku

Page 5: Archetech - Issue 9 2013

The new and palatial Four Seasons Hotel, designed

by specialist hotel architects, ReardonSmith, has

opened in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. In a city where

East meets West and where sculptured high-rise

towers co-exist with centuries-old buildings, the

Four Seasons building references the French Beaux-

Arts style of the late 19th Century – as directed by the

owner. It is a jewel in the crown of Baku architecture

befitting the Four Seasons brand and is an exuberant

building of classical proportions appropriate to its

location near the president’s office. At the same

time, it is a building designed from the inside out

to ensure that the hotel’s operating performance

and guest experience match its visual promise.

Conrad Smith, Managing Director of ReardonSmith

Architects, explains: “The external appearance

of the building was as much influenced by its

internal requirements as by the desire to create

a certain style of façade. So, while this happens

to be a quite traditional building envelope, we

very much observed the mantra of ‘form follows

function’. That said, we carefully researched the

Beaux-Arts period to make sure that the detailing

is authentic and, in this way, to avoid pastiche.”

Page 6: Archetech - Issue 9 2013

Situated on a prestigious but

constrained plot at a crossroads

overlooking the Caspian Sea, the

key to unlocking the site proved to be

the location of the main entrance on the

sea-facing elevation, together with the

creation of a colonnade the length of the

façade. This eliminated the potential of

traffic congestion around the arrival point

since limousines could cruise through

the colonnade to the hotel entrance and

then to the underground parking entrance

carefully accommodated within a rotunda

on the corner of the building.

The efficient street level plan was a

significant influence on the scale of the

building; it also achieved the all-important

ceremony of arrival for a hotel destined

to host numerous state and celebrity

occasions. Classically detailed bronze

door and window frames as well as iron

railings and balustrading to the guestroom

balconies embody the decorative charm of

the Beaux-Arts movement.

The ground floor plan inside flows from

the exterior. Designed on a primary and

a secondary axis, the layout means that

guests arriving in the entrance lobby in the

centre of the building can see at a glance the

key public areas to each side, including the

all-day dining restaurant, a bar and lounge

areas, and the lift lobby ahead. A feature

staircase takes guests to the first floor

which is entirely dedicated to banqueting.

The value in Baku of being seen to arrive at

glittering occasions meant that there was

need for only one grand entrance, allowing

guests to promenade through the hotel and

on to their event in either the ballroom or

the banqueting suite. The ballroom is

600sq metres and column-free,

necessitating a rigorously calculated

solution for the space that is both

lightweight and immensely strong in

response to the seismic character of the

region.

There are a total of 175 guestrooms

and suites. All the guestrooms are very

generously sized with an average footprint

of 52 sq metres and, since the corridors are

single loaded, each room offers a view of

either Baku or the Caspian Sea, completing

the luxury experience. This plan resulted in a

space in the centre of the seven guest floors

within which ReardonSmith has designed a

stunning “Roman basilica” soaring to a height

of 12 metres under a vaulted ceiling and

housing a large swimming pool. The rooftop

spa with its numerous treatment rooms,

a hammam and wet areas nestles under

a glazed roof with a marble-encased hot

tub area extending into one of the domes.

A speciality restaurant and bar as well as

a number of private dining rooms are also

accommodated on the top floor capturing

more unforgettable views building is clad

in local, pale-toned stone and has a pre-

patinated copper roof. “Our design of the

Beaux-Arts style Four Seasons Baku, coming

close on the heels of the modern glazed

tower also in Baku which we designed for

JW Marriott, amply demonstrates how we

successfully work within all architectural

styles to create world-renowned hotels,”

says Conrad Smith. “What our buildings

have in common is a simple and efficient

form that means front and back-of-house

are seamlessly integrated and they function

effectively.”

Your company information is probably our most valuable asset. Luckily Abbot Datastore have realised this for over 30 years and as a consequence have provided secure

storage for company data to architects, designers, surveyors and the construction industry throughout this time. We are ϐdata storage companies in the UK.

Even though very few hand produced blue prints and drawings are created these days, we still look after thousands in their original form thanks to the long and trusting relationship we’ve established with our clients. Of course since CAD became the new media tool of choice designs, plans and drawings are now all held on hard drives, tapes and MSD’s. Likewise, the

Abbot Datastore business model moved with the industry to provide secure offsite storage for all computer media formats in environmentally controlled vaults. It also reassures our customers to know that our 24/7 delivery and collection service is available within two hours, every single day of the year. Depending on your particular circumstances this method has proven more reliable than Cloud in many disaster recovery emergency requests.

With the introduction of CAD we were somewhat saddened to see so many drawing boards deposited into our archives only to see out the last years of their useful lives sat in storage, while their owners came to terms with the bright new future. However, some things never change as more and more models, prototypes, samples and equipment have gradually replaced yesterday’s material in storage and will no doubt in their turn

become the valuable relics of tomorrow.

With business premises at a premium and that long held desire ϐfading away, perhaps it’s time to consider another course.

ϐcentres, three of which are in Central London. This means we can offer the best rates available with accessibility like no other.

So if you have drawing tubes, boxed documents, models and ϐǡeverything on LTO computer tapes, back it up with us and rest assured we’ll be moving with the industry for the next 30 years.

Heritage Works - an invaluable

publication o!ering a toolkit of good

practice for the use of historic buildings in

regeneration

Deloitte Real Estate: Following ‘good practice’ principles can increase the chances of success of heritage-led development projects in our urban and rural environments, according to leading experts from !e British Property Federation (BPF), English Heritage, !e Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Deloitte Real Estate.

Relaunched today, Heritage Works is an updated publication from the 2006 "rst edition that takes into account new national planning policy guidance and provides new case study evidence to show how heritage-based regeneration can work in practice. It is collectively written by these principal bodies combining their expertise and in-depth knowledge of heritage properties and the market. !e practical step-by-step guide for developers, owners, local authorities and advisers provides invaluable advice and warns of common pitfalls and points to ways of overcoming them. It signposts more than 30 information sources and is intended as the ‘"rst-stop’ reference document or ‘toolkit’ for the regeneration of the historic environment and heritage buildings.

Simon !urley, chief executive of English Heritage, said:“Heritage Works provides practical advice on what creates successful heritage-led regeneration. It shows that by applying some basic principles, developers are giving themselves and our important historic buildings a much better opportunity for success.”!e publication features a chart for navigating listed building consent and lists issues to consider when assessing heritage properties. It also considers the importance of breaking cycles of decline, as well as a range of issues such as concept development, economic bene"ts, characterisation, VAT, fund-raising, CIL, the public realm and conservation management plans.

Liz Peace, chief executive of the BPF, said:“England possesses some of the "nest architectural heritage in the world that when used properly as an asset, and given new life, continues to be one of the cornerstones of the economic and social revival of many of our towns and cities. Such regeneration represents an

opportunity for conservationists and the development industry to work together to transform the built environment and public realm for the communities that live and work there.”

Rob Colley, partner and head of public sector at Deloitte Real Estate, said:“Enlightened developers and authorities are leading the way in realising that heritage assets can play a central role in achieving the successful and sustainable revitalisation of our towns, cities and rural areas. Historic buildings are increasingly seen as an opportunity rather than a constraint: they create focal points of character and can confer economic and social value beyond their own boundary. !e work of Gloucester Renaissance, Royal William Yard in Plymouth and Leopold Square in She#eld are great examples that heritage really works.” Mark Walley, RICS UK and Ireland executive director, said: “An action critical to success is really understanding the heritage asset in question. !is includes early consultation with English Heritage and the local planning authorities, ensuring a viable economic use and paying the right price for the asset. We don’t have to go far to see successful schemes enhancing our built environment. !e 53 acre redevelopment of the former railway lands at King’s Cross incorporates 20 historic buildings into its fabric – helping to de"ne and enhance one of the most important regeneration projects in Europe.”

More than 80 per cent of applications for listed building consents are granted. Forthcoming research from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery fund indicates that listed buildings are particularly favoured by retail and restaurant occupiers, helping to create vibrant urban environments, and that more than half of commercial occupiers of listed buildings are from professional services. In certain areas we see major concentrations of creative industries based in listed buildings. Soho Conservation Zone has 280 such companies and the Clerkenwell Green Conservation Area 165.

Colley concludes: “Conservation meaning strict preservation is thankfully progressing towards a more balanced, $exible and enlightened approach, with a greater degree of consultation and collaboration between owners, developers, occupiers and planning authorities.”

Inspired by the Park House

project Robin Partington Architects has announced that its Park House project in London, has won a 2012 Be Inspired Award from Bentley Systems, Incorporated. !e project won in the “Innovation in Generative Design” category. Commenting on the award presented to Robin Partington Architects, Huw Roberts, Bentley Vice President, core marketing, said, “!e projects in the ‘Innovation in Generative Design’ award category used associative parametric modeling to automate design processes and accelerate design iterations. !e projects exemplify new ways to e#ciently explore alternative building forms and design options without manually building a detailed design model for each scenario. !eir use of generative design accelerates design and documentation e#ciency and improves design quality.

“!e Park House is a 1.04-acre city block redevelopment on the edge of Mayfair in London, United Kingdom, comprising retail space at the basement, ground, and "rst-$oor levels; seven $oors of o#ce space on the western end; and 39 private residential $ats to the east. !e GBP 100 million project posed structural challenges due to its unique façade, mixed use, proximity to a London Underground tunnel, and retail requirements of a world-renowned location.“As the judges noted upon reaching their decision, with the help of Bentley’s generative design so%ware, GenerativeComponents, Robin Partington Architects solved extremely di#cult design challenges, including pushing the boundaries of glass bending. !ey were able to explore various iterations of glass technology and its abilities, which allowed the team to use cold-bending on over 85 percent of the glass panels to minimize the need for curved panels. On behalf of my colleagues at Bentley, I congratulate Robin Partington Architects on this extraordinary accomplishment!”

Launch of Architect’s Eye 2013Architect’s Eye, a competition which celebrates and encourages photography by architects, has just been launched. !e competition, organised by International Art Consultants, is now being held for the fourth time since its launch in 2007.

!e competition is open to UK architects and is split into two distinct categories: Architecture and Place and Architecture and People. !e former focuses solely on the aesthetics of the architecture and places it creates, while the latter explores and celebrates the interaction of people with the environments created by architects. !e winner in each category will receive a weekend break for two anywhere in the EU. !is year the Architect’s Eye Judging Panel is chaired by leading architect Simon Allford, Director at international studio Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. Simon is a frequent lecturer and critic in the UK and abroad and he has been Vice President of RIBA ( Education), a Chair of Design Review CABE and the Architecture Association. Simon’s recent projects include the Google Headquarters at Kings Cross, the Angel Building, Chobham Academy, !e Saatchi Gallery and Yellow Building.

!e winning works will be showcased in an exhibition at the Roca London Gallery coinciding with the start of the London Festival of Architecture in July 2013. Architect’s Eye and Roca join forces again following their fruitful partnership during the Architect’s Eye Photography Exhibition in 2012. Roca has come on board this year as the Venue Sponsor by providing the Zaha Hadid designed Roca London Gallery to host the competition awards and exhibition. Peter Zumthor is presented with the Royal Gold Medal for architecture

!e world renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has received one of the world’s most prestigious architecture prizes, the Royal Gold Medal at a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London. He was presented with the medal by RIBA President Angela Brady, in the presence of over 200 guests.

Given in recognition of a lifetime’s work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen and is given to a person or group of people who have had a signi"cant in#uence “either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture”.

Known for running a small yet powerful and uncompromising practice, Peter Zumthor founded his award-winning "rm in 1979 in Switzerland. His most celebrated projects include the Kunsthaus

Bregenz in Austria, the !erme Vals (thermal baths) in Vals, Switzerland and the Kolumba Art Museum in Cologne. He designed London’s 2011 Serpentine Pavilion and is currently designing a house in Devon for philosopher Alain de Botton’s Living Architecture architect-designed holiday home scheme.

He is exceptionally talented at creating highly atmospheric spaces through his mastery of light and choice of materials. Zumthor’s buildings, such as his small rural chapels and the !ermal Baths at Vals, are an experience for all the senses, with every detail reinforcing the essence of the building and its surroundings.

RIBA President Angela Brady, who chaired the Honours Committee which selected the Royal Gold Medal winner said:

‘Peter Zumthor’s work renews the link with a tradition of modern architecture that emphasises place, community and material practice. His writings dwell upon the experience of designing, building and inhabitation while his buildings are engaged in a rich dialogue with architectural history. I will be delighted to present him with the

Royal Gold Medal.’Peter Zumthor will be presented with the Royal Gold Medal on Wednesday 6 February 2013 at a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, during which the 2013 RIBA International and Honorary Fellowships will also be presented.

In his book !inking Architecture, published by Birkhauser, Zumthor set down in his own words a philosophy of architecture:

‘I believe that architecture today needs to re#ect on the tasks and possibilities which are inherently its own. Architecture is not a vehicle or a symbol for things that do not belong to its essence. In a society that celebrates the inessential, architecture can put up a resistance, counteract the waste of forms and meanings, and speak its own language. I believe that the language of architecture is not a question of a speci"c style. Every building is built for a speci"c use in a speci"c place and for a speci"c society. My buildings try to answer the questions that emerge from these simple facts as precisely and critically as they can.’

Decseal waterproofing for IKEA car park

A project to install a protective dual function waterproofing and anti-skid system to the car park of the IKEA store near Leeds has been completed using Stirling Lloyd’s Decseal.

The advanced methyl methacrylate resin-based Decseal system has been applied by Stirling Lloyd Construction to the 6,300m" top deck of the car park. Liquid applied Decseal easily copes with the awkward contours, profiles and joints associated with multi storey car parks, decks and ramps.

As well as for its track record of success, Decseal was specified because it could be pigmented with IKEA’s distinctive yellow and blue corporate colours to match the store fascade. The system’s rapid application and fast cure benefits allowed Stirling Lloyd Construction to hand over the completed project within the five week schedule. The bite of recession felt in recent years has meant the unsurprising introduction of cut backs, a need for tighter budget controls and delivery of cost e!ective solutions to the construction environment.

Through these times of austerity, one regional steelwork contractor has bucked the trend, and now has plans to further develop their business to ensure future success through diversification of the products and services they o!er their clients. This company is Multi-Fab Construction Ltd.

Managing Director Steve Tomlinson founded Multi-Fab Construction (MFC), in 1986. Since inception MFC have built an outstanding reputation in the West Midlands, Wales, the South West and Greater London for designing, fabricating and erecting the highest quality Steel Framed Buildings and other steelwork structures (Bridges, staircases, mezzanine floors etc) for the Commercial, Industrial, Leisure and Agricultural markets. Employing a philosophy that the business is only as strong as the relationships it maintains with its clients, designers and contractors.

WOOD INTERIORS MAKE A COME BACK

The demand for wood in interiors has seen a massive revival in recent years. Nowhere is this trend more evident than in the stairparts market where metal and glass balustrading is no longer the preferred choice, with people demanding a more homely touch to their staircases - a touch which only wood can provide.

The trend has been reinforced by recent research by UK staircase brand id modern stairparts who surveyed visitors to its stand at last year’s Grand Designs Live. The company found that 97% of consumers were interested in using wood in their staircases with just one in six choosing metal as their preferred material.

The 1990’s saw a lot of talk about home working and telecommuting but witnessed very little movement towards the changing work attitude. In the last ten years, telecommuting, along with self-employment have really taken o!.

For examples of great value full insulated Garden o"ces starting from under £5,000, contact

Dunster House on 01234 272 445 or www.dunsterhouse.co.uk

The images used for this article were provided by Dunster House and show models of the Lienne and Alexander Garden O!ces.

With the advances in technology you can move your o!ce to the bottom of the garden with ease. Your home wi-fi can be extended across your garden and the majority of Garden O!ces have the option for electrical installation. Many Garden O!ces are available fully insulated with double glazed windows and doors, a significant improvement from the conditions Mr Dahl would write in.

Garden O!ces are more cost e"ective than many realise. It is cheaper to purchase a garden o!ce than it is to extend your home or move; there’s also less worry, hassle and stress involved. Moving your o!ce out of your home and into your garden ensures a stronger division from home and work, as well as keeping you away from your television or household chores. Cutting down the commute will also allow you to be more visible at those crucial family and school events.

Home Offices from Dunster House

Before the end of 2012 over 4.2 million people were registered as self employed. Now over 3.7million people in the United Kingdom work from home on occasion or use their home as a base for work. This is no surprise considering in 2011, the then Business Secretary, Vince Cable, announced his aim for employees to request a more flexible working pattern by 2013, whether it was the use of flexi-time or telecommuting from home.

For those that work from home on a regular basis there’s always the problem of space. Not everyone has the spare room readily available to work in from home, and those that do may find that the room soon becomes unavailable with the arrival of children. Moving home is stressful and expensive, and the same can be said about extending your property. So, why not purchase a Garden O!ce? Roald Dahl wrote his children’s stories in his own Garden O!ce and look at the success he created!

The Dune Housearmund/Vigsnæs Architects (JVA)

A building with a complex roofscape geometry, that references local seaside buildings, while remaining distinctively contemporary.

© Living Architecture

Page 19: Archetech - Issue 9 2013

The Dune House is a stunning reinvention and reinterpretation of the English sea- side dwelling. Designed by a Norwegian practice celebrated for their creative responses to the highly seasonal Nordic landscape, The Dune House will be JVA’s first UK building. It is located on the southern edge of the village of Thorpeness, on the Su!olk coast.

“For us the most interesting tension was to create something that would not only fit in with the local landscape and ‘society’, but would also be refreshingly new”, says director Hakon Vigsnaes.

“The gabled roof is particularly ‘English’ – not something you would find in Norway – so we wanted to make a feature of that.”

The roof, clad in a lightly tinted orange steel alloy, reflects the changing colours of the sea and sky and the panoramic windows on the ground floor o!er views of the sea, whilst giving the sense of the house being nestled in the dunes. JVA wanted to create more than just a space for sleeping upstairs, so each of the four double bedrooms has a bathtub in it, with windows carefully positioned so that one can lie in warm water and take in views of the North Sea and surrounding meadows. Separate shower and toilet facilities are attached to each room and there is a small library and roof terrace on this floor.

The ground floor, with its living area, kitchen, terrace and further en-suite bedroom, is at once open to the landscape and protect from it by being set into the dunes. Sliding doors can be opened on the ground floor to give 360 degree views, a move which emphasizes the floating appearance of the upper floor.

While the materials of the ground floor (concrete, glass and aluminium) root the building with a reassuring sense of heaviness, the upper floor (made of timber planks) gives a nautical feel that echoes the gables and seaside huts of the area.

“The gabled roof is particularly ‘English’ – not something you would find in Norway – so we wanted to make a feature of that.”

DESIGN THAT’S MADE TO LAST FROM BC DESIGNSMake a design statement in the bathroom with the Kurv bath from BC Designs’ ‘thinn’ bath range. The bath is made using Cian solid surfacing technology; a repairable, decorative surface material manufactured using an advanced blend of acrylic modified polyester resin and mineral fillers. Using this technology BC Designs has combined design and durability producing a bath which is both stain and scratch resistant. Unlike many other baths it is also non-porous, non-yellowing and resistant to thermal shock.

The bath has an overflow built seamlessly into the body of the bath and is available with or without a plinth. Seen here with a gloss finish, a matt finish is also available.

The ‘Kurv’ bath without plinth measures 900mm width x 1890mm length x 560mm height. The ‘Kurv’ bath with plinth measures 900mm width x 1890 mm length x 640mm height.

The Usual Approach The Solution

create some spacewith a Shared Bathroom Solution

Hoyles Shared Bathroom Solution is an effective way to utilise building space.

One bathroom between 2 rooms can save an entire bathroom worth of fl oor space plus the cost of the sanitary ware.

As well as the obvious money saving benefi ts the Shared Bathroom Solution provides secure door control, preventing the bathroom being used as a passageway and total privacy for its users. An incorporated advanced assistance alarm automatically releases a door if help is called for and prevents users from hogging the bathroom.

Two doors not enough? Why not add a third door for access from a corridor!

Early in 2009 CRM Architects was invited by Fairgate Investments Limited to consider proposals for the redevelopment of a retail park of deteriorating quality at Narborough Road/ Braunstonegate, Leicester. Working in conjunction with project managers, Redbourn Group, and the design team, proposals were prepared, tenant interest established and discussions entered into with the local planning authority.

It became clear that Leicester City Highways department had signi!cant aspirations for the highways system around the site and so, following land swap negotiations, a revised plan was agreed. Part of the exchanged site area incorporated an old Victorian brick-built egg sewer that had to be diverted due to its position beneath one corner of the proposed building. "ere were also a number of TPO trees along the boundary of the site.

"e planning department at Leicester played an important lead role in identifying the scope of the site, the implications of the removal of the tree screen and crucially the requirement for a building of signi!cant style for this important location on one of the arterial roads into Leicester.

By early 2010 the site layout, additional highways works, sewer diversions, style of building and speci!c tenant requirements had been distilled into an agreed scheme. Planning consent was granted and details of the scheme worked up so that an archaeological survey could be undertaken on the site. Roman remains had previously been found on the site and our investigations, carried out by Leicester University Archaeology Group, con!rmed those !ndings and obtained further samples from the site.

Vinci Construction UK was appointed Main Contractor and works started in November 2011 with sewer diversion and highways works so that the building construction works could start in January 2012. Vinci was also appointed to carry out the tenant !t out works and this has enabled a fast-track construction programme for the

building to be complete in time for trade opening in July 2012.

Creating a small carbon footprint for the building is upper-most in the minds of designers at the moment and so CRM Architects worked to incorporate energy saving measures within the project. "ese included using reconstituted cladding panels made from compressed waste stone materials for the building façade, SUDS drainage to the car park area to reduce drainage out-fall rates, rainwater harvesting to provide grey water for the wc facilities, combined heat and power systems, passive natural air ventilation #umes to the main retail area, large areas of glazing to a$ord views out and increase building envelope permeability together with deep daylight penetration enhanced by large roof lights above the retail area. "e design of the building is predicated on the desire of the local planning authority for a building of quality facing onto Narborough Road to compensate for the loss of trees and opening up the views into the site."e design needed to be a sculptured form in order to justify the setting, tight on the main road, and so incorporated a modelled outward sloping façade of planar-style glazing and polished reconstituted stone incorporating deep canopies and lobbies to the west and south elevations. "is provides a degree of passive solar control whilst allowing glazed elevations to express the visual permeability of the designed envelope, as expected by the retail tenant. Flush facing materials and a raking transition from glass to stone establishes a homogenous design style whilst creating movement in

three dimensions on the façade and enhancing the sculptural context.

CRM Architects are the BREEAM assessors on this project where reducing the building carbon foot print is a key element of the design process. "e retail store has been designed to achieve a BREEAM “very good” rating standard.

PROJECT OVERVIEWThe aim with this project was to push the boundaries in environmental and sustainable design. The approach taken was to produce south-facing terraces of earth-sheltered, two-storey dwellings with green roofs and large terraces. The majority of the glazing was placed on the south eleva-tion to make best use of the winter sun and sea views. The GZHOOLQJVEHQH¿WIURPVXVWDLQDEOHORZWHFKVROXWLRQVVXFKas passive solar gain, high levels of insulation, rainwater collection and exhaust air heat pumps. The green roofs help to blend the development into the landscape, improve bio-diversity, reduce the speed of rainwater run-off and provide attractive outlooks for the residents.

Externally the dwellings use locally sourced timber cladding and lime render to create a modern ‘beach hut’ aesthetic. Internally, care has been taken to use as many natural prod-ucts as possible, such as the recycled newspaper insulation and the wood wool sheathing and insulation boards. This combined with the ventilation system and natural daylighting all help to create healthy internal environments.

The project gained a successful planning approval in 2FWREHUDQGWKH¿UVWWZRSKDVHVFRPSULVLQJKROLGD\homes, are now complete.

“Our business depends on the natural environment for its success. So when we decided to enhance our offer with new self-catering apartments and holiday homes we wanted to create something that would respect its prominent coastal setting while setting new standards for sustainable devel-opment in our sector and appeal to our environmentally conscious customers. Kebony will once again exhibit its award-winning alternative to tropical hardwood at Ecobuild from 5 – 7 March 2013. This innovative Norwegian Cleantech 100 company will not only exhibit its impressive product range at stand S925 but its latest project - KREOD – will form the eye-catching media and visitor centre for the show at stand N3040. KREOD is London’s newest architectural landmark: a visually-striking sculpture made of Kebony and the brainchild of Chun Qing Li, Managing Director of Pavilion Architecture. Following a stint at Peninsula Square (between the Emirates Air Line and The O2 Arena), KREOD will be used as the press and visitor centre for Ecobuild –hosting daily talks on its pioneering design and state-of-the-art technology. Organic in form, environmentally-friendly and inspired by nature, KREOD resembles three seeds and consists of three pods that combine through a series of interlocking hexagons to create an enclosed structure that can be combined in a variety of configurations. Each pod is formed of a staggering 1,000 individual pieces of wood cut precisely to an accuracy and tolerance of 0.02mm. Meanwhile, at stand S925 Kebony will exhibit its award-winning alternative to tropical hardwood and preservative treated wood. A non-toxic, easily maintained, beautiful and environmentally-friendly wood, Kebony is resistant to decay and cost e!ective due to its durability and long lifespan. The pioneering Kebonization* process transforms sustainable wood species into those with comparable, and often superior, attributes to tropical hardwood. Kebony is applicable to a range of uses including: decking, flooring, cladding, roofing, windows and both indoor and outdoor furniture. As such, Kebony has been used for a number of high-profile international projects including: Kebony’s first major UK residential build - 25 Hurst Avenue, the newly-redeveloped Yarmouth Harbour, the Hackney Picturehouse, London’s Colindale School and even a Wallpaper*-commissioned Kebony Dog House! In recognition of its green credentials, Kebony AS was named as one of the world’s most promising clean technology companies in the Global Cleantech 100, both in 2010 and 2011, in competition with more than 3,000 companies from 50 countries. Kebony also received Deloitte’s ‘Fast 50 Award’, was cited as one of the top 50 companies that could change our world in 2010, alongside being cited by CNBC as a top 25 creative European Company. Kebony also received the Nordic region’s the Swan and Glass Bear awards and numerous UK industry awards including the 2012 Cleantech Connect ‘top 50 fastest growing companies’ and the Best Business Award in 2012. Commenting on this year’s Ecobuild Jan Terje Nielsen, Kebony’s Director of Marketing says: “Ecobuild is a very important industry-event and we are delighted to not only exhibit but have one of our recent projects showcased. KREOD is an architectural masterpiece and a superb example of sustainable innovation. We encourage all those visiting this year’s Ecobuild to take a look at KREOD and attend our programme of talks.” Jan Terje Neilsen and Chun Qing Li, Managing Director of Pavilion Architecture are both available for media briefings. IBSECAD has grown into an industry leader in the CAD (Computer Aided Design) co-ordination field. Working with main contractors and sub-contractors, IBSECAD helps to bridge the gap between design and build by utilising the latest technology to visualise construction plans and support its clients in delivering projects on time and under budget. For Richard Baglow, Regional Director of IBSECAD, the traditional process for reviewing with projectors and paper copies left something to be desired:

“IBSECAD have a lot of workshops with client teams, design teams and site teams, running through the CAD models on the screen, for which we use a package called Autodesk Navisworks which made it easier for the clients to visualise their projects but it was a relatively slow process.” The solution was a SMART Board® Interactive whiteboard. Richard explains why they chose SMART Technologies: “As a 3D design company, IBSECAD is heavily involved at all stages of the building process. With a SMART Board installed, we can make any annotations to pictures and images that we see fit, manipulate the display with touch gestures on the board, write in digital ink on the display and save, print and distribute the outputs at any time. Previously, we would have to think carefully about any annotations we made because they were always on paper. Now, with the SMART Board, it is quick and easy to alter a design without ruining the plan. It allows everyone to understand what we have created, how we have created it and why. The SMART Board is superb at keeping everyone on track with project schedules. By capturing a detailed record of the collaborative process, it also provides greater clarity and transparency, which reduces the risk of any last minute disputes over the decisions taken.”

Richard believes that the SMART Board has helped IBSECAD to stay ahead of the competition:

“The SMART Board is the best piece of technology we have ever invested in. We’re leading the way in our industry with this technology. We make sure that we write it into tenders and tell prospective clients all about our SMART Board and the benefits for progress review meetings and sign-o! workshops. On the University Medical Centre project in Louisiana, we used the SMART Board to work with colleagues on the other side of the Atlantic. It proves that with these tools, we can bid for, win and deliver contracts anywhere in the world.”

Unlocking the best of

bi-foldsDavid Ginger, Technical Director of Origin Frames Ltd, looks at the commonly asked questions for the ever more popular home improvement solution of bi-folding doors.

SecurityThe traditionally weak areas for most doors are the cylinder/locking barrel and the handle as they often use insecure cylinders which allow burglars to bump, drill or snap the cylinder. Ensure there is a multi-point lock on the lead door. Opt for an 8-point multi-point ‘Secure By Design’ police accredited locking system with a

kite marked magnum security cylinder with coded key to o!er the ultimate in door security. Laminated glass is even tougher than standard glass for those wanting extra security.

It is also important that the hinge is made out of a strong material, such as aluminium, so that the doors can’t be levered o!. A rivet nut and bolt screw arrangement is the strongest and most secure design.

U-ValuesThe major consideration regarding heat loss and energy e"ciency is the U Value which can vary greatly across folding sliding doors. The current U Value regulations are 1.8W/(m2K) when you are replacing existing doors and 2.0 W/(m2K) for new builds or extensions. Aluminium bi-folds with triple glazed units can achieve U Values of 1.3 W/(m2K). Double glazing can achieve 1.67 W/(m2K) using 24mm units.

The main contributor to low U-Values of aluminium folding sliding doors is the thermal break which resists thermal transfer from the outside face of the doors through to the living area inside. Thermal glass is also available.

Thresholds and drainageFlush thresholds on external bi-folds are very popular but it is a common myth that they can be completely weather rated. The best solution is a standard threshold sunk into the floor; this will allow for full weathering whilst keeping internal and external floor levels within a few mm.

There are two types of drainage that can be used on external bi-folds, which apply to both flush and standard thresholds: face and concealed.

Di!erent configurationsMore complex folding sliding door configurations such as 90 degree corner or bay configurations are becoming popular in new build properties with conservatories and orangeries. To have a moving corner post configuration where there is a completely unspoilt view, structural support is required. Alternatively a fixed corner post can be used to add support throughout.

GRAND DESIGNS FROM APEER

Apeer Doors has added a stunning new design to its product portfolio with a doorset aimed at those with grand designs in mind.

The new Apeer APP4 door comes in a generously proportioned 1100mm width in response to growing demand for larger-than-standard sized doors. It is suitable for the many new build homes now featuring bigger entrances as well as houses that need wheelchair access.

Said Apeer marketing manager Linda Tomb: “We are seeing more and more requests coming through for larger front doors. This is a reflection of the vogue for more imposing entrances – as well as the growing number of homes requiring wheelchair access.

“However, we are so confident in the appeal of the contemporary styling of the APP4 that the new design can also be made to reduced dimensions for smaller entrances.

Made to the same high spec as all Apeer 70 doorsets, the new addition features a double rebate profile, triple glazing, multi-point locks and a Kitemark cylinder along with the option of a bar pull handle and wind up lock.

The lock used with the bar pull handle is a Heritage AV2 lock system from Winkhaus. A Euro profile cylinder is located at a similar height to a traditional round cylinder pull, locking the door automatically once it is closed. No external lever handle is required to operate the locking points: the lock can be deadlocked or opened externally by a quarter turn of the key.

The bar pull handles themselves are o!ered in three lengths – 1,000mm, 800mm and 600mm - in three contemporary, brushed steel options. For those who prefer a traditional lever handle, this style is also available.

Apeer 70 doors have now been o"cially recognised as ‘Energy A Rated’. The company will be exhibiting at the Fabricator and Installer Trade (FIT) show at Telford International Centre in April 2013.

Ecobuild (www.ecobuild.co.uk), the world’s premier showcase for sustainability and the built environment, returns to London’s ExCeL in March 2013. We take a closer look at what’s on o!er for the architectural technology community.

Ecobuild – taking place from March 5th to 7th at London’s ExCeL, should be a date in the diary for anyone working in the architecture field. It’s the world’s largest showcase for sustainable design and construction and o!ers more than 1,500 exhibitors, 1100 expert speakers, plus dozens of interactive and educational attractions.

The three-day event is the perfect opportunity for architects to rub shoulders with academics, government representatives and a whole range of industry experts, to discuss the latest developments in the world of sustainable design.

This year, top architects from around the world will meet at Ecobuild to debate current issues facing the future of the profession at Ecobuild’s ‘Design Architecture & Sustainability’ conference.

RIBA president Angela Brady will kick o! day one with the hot topic of ‘Sustainable design should be irresistible design’ and will be joined by Louis Becker, International Director and partner from international architecture practice Henning Larsen.

The crème de la crème of the design world will come together in the Ecobuild Arena at the heart of the show floor to cover topical issues such as ‘Reinventing the high street’ led by the Chief Executive of Igloo and ‘Encouraging sustainability through art’ with Oliver James, psychologist, writer and broadcaster and Tom Hodgkinson,

writer, editor from The Idler.

‘Is BIM the saviour of sustainable design?’ is set to be an engaging debate, bringing together experts from ARUP, Make Architects and Penoyre & Prasad and hosted by Thomas Lane, Group Technical Editor, Building Magazine and Ecobuild.

Kieran Long, architecture critic from the Evening Standard will ask the important question ‘How far can wood replace concrete and steel?’, whilst Aecom’s Sustainability Director will focus on the latest issues and opportunities surrounding ‘Water sensitive urban design’.

Further issues to be covered include ‘How can design help to create sustainable communities?’ and ‘Lessons from the past’ led by Professor Herbert Girardet, co-founder of the World Future Council.

Ecobuild will also bring together a wealth of top sustainability experts to debate and share their unique perspectives on the global sustainability agenda with the launch of its Sustainability Overseas conference programme.

Forming part of Ecobuild 2013’s wider conference programme in association with UKGBC, the one-day conference stream will take place on Wednesday 6th March 2013 covering the challenges and opportunities of sustainability around the world with experts from UK Green Building Council, RICS, AECOM, International Sustainability Alliance, BRE, Premier Inn and many more. For the full programme line-up and speaker information, please visit http://bit.ly/sustainabilityoverseas

Industry experts will discuss hot topics such as ‘Understanding the

sustainability drivers in overseas markets’, ‘What sustainability strategies are needed for di!erent climatic zones?’ ‘What and where are the market opportunities for sustainability expertise in BRIC nations?’ and ‘Successfully delivering sustainable buildings in emerging markets’.

Set to be an exciting year, 2013 will also see a wealth of new features and content showcased at Ecobuild. The new Future Materials Gallery is a must-see for every architectural technologist. Think scientists in lab coats and beakers bubbling away, the new Future Materials Gallery will bring the world’s latest building technologies together in a futuristic showcase to educate and inspire the next generation of architects at Ecobuild 2013.

Mind-blowing innovations will be on display, from self-healing concrete and use of ‘biomimicry’ - stone, cement and wood substitutes, to heat responsive ‘thermobimetals’ metals that act like human skin, and the pioneering application of “blue smoke” - the world’s lightest solid, to create see-through doors, windows and structures without fear of heat loss.

Also new for 2013, The Light Box will take architects on a journey from day to night; showcasing the latest sustainable lighting technologies as they walk through this inspirational feature.

From daylighting design and energy e"cient LEDs, light bulbs and Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL), to emerging technologies such as sunlight transportation, visitors will learn how to implement sustainable lighting solutions that dramatically reduce energy consumption and address the latest environmental regulations.

Remmers have been awarded the prestigious FeRFA Large Project of the Year Award for the 600m2 bespoke resin floor in the new purpose built, state of the art Audi car centre in Leicester.

A designer showroom in need of designer flooring; this project involved the installation of a unique vertical design with just one construction joint sweeping into the main showroom floor area. Specially coated aggregates to exact granule sizing and colour were applied and installed by Phoenix Specialist Flooring Contractors, to produce a decorative and contemporary resin finish.

Steel trims were sourced and powder coated to the exact same colour as the resin floor to hide any transitions giving the floor and wall the appearance of one sweeping finish.

Oak Floors Online is rapidly becoming well known for the high quality of their products and service, along with an honesty that’s quite frankly a ‘breath of fresh air’ within the flooring industry.

Not content on simply selling oak flooring and its related products just to make a profit, Oak Floors Online make every e!ort to help and advise every customer about how natural oak flooring performs in various environments, so that each person can make an informed decision on whether or not it is the correct and suitable choice for their own situation.

Many companies steer away from the truth about potential issues with oak flooring and its installation, but Oak Floors Online actually highlight them from the beginning in an aim to ensure that the customer sources the product they want, and knows how it needs to be maintained thereafter.

“It’s better to lose an order than to supply the wrong product or information to simply ‘get the sale’ because if the sale goes wrong thereafter, it leaves the customer unhappy and out of pocket, whilst giving the product and industry a bad reputation” says Will Morris, the Director of Flooring Operations and Development for Oak Floors Online. It’s this honest approach that has helped Oak Floors Online grow over the last few years, whilst developing many ongoing relationships with satisfied customers who return time and time again.

Rather than stock hundreds of di!erent flooring products that may confuse potential customers, Oak Floors Online choose to keep a selected range of, in their opinion, the most popular and desirable finishes available, and at very competitive rates.

This is backed up by a passion for quality that often exceeds what the most demanding customer expects, thus providing the perfect mix of attributes for a successful business that puts its customers first.

Free samples of all oak flooring products are available via the website at:

www.OakFloorsOnline.co.uk Looking for structural oak flooring for installation over UFH? Look no further…

Innovation is at the forefront of everything that happens within Oak Floors Online, and one recent development may solve a problem for many Architects and Project Designers when it comes to specifying or recommending suitable oak flooring for installation over Under Floor Heating systems.

Oak Floors Online have developed a unique product called ThruFlow, which is a 22mm thick engineered product with a full 6mm wear layer of oak that’s heat-bonded to a high quality Birch plywood underside.

This plywood underside has a precise pattern of holes drilled accurately and su"ciently into it during manufacture to reduce the thermal resistance of the finished product, whilst still maintaining the structural strength and stability that’s required for these installation situations.

Thermal resistance for the 22mm ThruFlow is significantly better than a standard 20mm or 21mm engineered product, so allowing the UFH system to work more e"ciently whilst the floor performs robustly and e!ectively within the most challenging of UFH situations.

The ThruFlow is currently only available as a Brushed & Natural Oiled finish but other finishes are planned for the future, when Oak Floors Online have gathered more information about market demand.

Linked to and supported by a successful Timber Merchant and Roof Truss Manufacturer, Oak Floors Online can provide anything and everything to do with timber, including any bespoke shape and size of oak that may be required.

PROJECT DATA

Project Name: The Arts Space, Hereford College of ArtsType Of Project: EducationLocation: Hereford, HerefordshireClient: Hereford College of ArtsContract duration: 8.5 monthsInternal floor area: 360m2Form of contract and/or procurement: 2-stage Design and BuildContract Value: £920k

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project delivers much-needed cafe and exhibition space for the Hereford College of Arts within a dynamic and sustainable new volume.

The College demanded an innovative, design-led solution, with a strong green agenda. They wanted an open-plan, flexible space, but encouraged the design team to explore new ways of servicing, supporting and enveloping this volume to create an inspiring and sustainable building that would act as a fitting backdrop to the artistic endeavours of the College and its students.

Environmentally, the emphasis was on a passive approach to operation, with as little reliance on active ‘systems’ as possible. We wanted this building to fully integrate its sustainable strategy, so that the focus was on the space and the activities within in it, not on the technologies

behind it.

The building’s distinctive form derives from the constraints of the site - the parallelogram ‘wedge’ of the main cafe / exhibition area responds to the geometry of the adjacent roadway. The main volume is defined as an elegant glass box, which is then protected as necessary from environmental pressures.

STRUCTUREThe unique ‘twisted-trestle’ structure is made from a combination of glu-laminated timber beams / columns, cross-laminated timber panels and slender steel props. CLT was used on this project for its unique characteristics which allows panels to span two ways. The idea of this free-spanning deck, supported by timber trestles was developed by the design team using a number of balsa wood models.

Support to the entrance

elevation is as light as possible, allowing clear views of the building’s inviting interior, whilst substantial timbers on the opposite side firmly root the building to the ground. Their tree-like form is intended to invoke comparisons with Herefordshire’s native orchards.

INTERIOR

The interior treatment strives to create a calm, neutral space for the display of art. To this end, the majority of environmental services within the main space have been concealed and the functionality of the building fabric has been significantly enhanced - e.g the fritted solar shading doubles as a media projection screen and the timber-slatted wall panels provide both acoustic and thermal insulation.

OM There’s a fabulously fresh new

look to 2013 at Whitehead Designs, with a sumptuous new brochure and stylish new website that both showcase the quality and craftsmanship of their bespoke UK-made furniture in beautiful detail.

‘We’ve invested in lots of stunning new location images of our furniture, as well as large, clear detailed shots of individual pieces’ explains Janet Houston, Head of Sales & Marketing. ‘Shot in natural light in real interior settings makes it so much easier to imagine the furniture in your own home, whilst the individual images really highlight the quality and detail of our workmanship.’

The website is an easy-to-use, tablet friendly tool, perfect for showing in client presentations. It allows you to zoom-in over a product and see features, dimensions and finish options.

Once registered on the site - a 10-second process - designers can add products to their own ‘favourites’ list, annotate them with their own ‘comments’ (useful for project references, for example) and even share their selection - a great way to send chosen designs straight to a client to review. ‘I know it will become an invaluable tool for designers in an increasingly competitive market’ Houston enthuses, ‘being both useful and impressive to designer’s clients.’

Visiting the Whitehead marketing showroom is the other way to see their latest new designs, from contemporary chic to traditional elegance, such as the ARUNDEL SOFA, a sleek contemporary design, perfect for home cinema rooms, or the grandly traditional KEDLESTON 3 SEAT SOFA, for sumptuous comfort in stately homes or boutique hotels.

THE TOWER, GREAT WEST QUARTER, BRENTFORD

Introduction:

Positioned along the ‘Golden Mile’ in Brentford, the 27-storey

Great West Quarter Tower will be the tallest building in

Hounslow. It will offer views over London and the nearby

Kew Gardens from the publicly accessible Viewing

Gallery and will also incorporate one of the largest

light sculptures in Europe.

The rationale for a Tower in this location was

determined by the study of existing point blocks

along the route’. These buildings create visual

interest and act as a gateway to London, a

tradition started in the 1920’s when a number of

industrial buildings were built along this stretch

in the Art Deco style. When complete, the Great

West Quarter Tower will take its place amongst

these iconic buildings and become an important

landmark for West London.

The Design:

Designed as part of the Great West Quarter

development, the building’s massing and

positioning on site was informed by wind tunnel

testing. This testing resulted in a Yacht Mast plan

that works with other buildings on the site to

reduce wind turbulence.

The double skin façade creates a sculptural effect

through the use of layering and transparency; this

Phase Change Materials : Passive Cooling

How It Works?PCM allows for the over-night cool energy to be stored in Tube-Ice ceiling panels (Charge Period). This storage process allows the PCM to absorb the internal and solar heat gains throughout the day, hence producing a free passive cooling system.

Benefits :PCM o!ers a truly Zero-Carbon energy free cooling solution; providing numerous benefits that include a highly retro-fittable design, which can be applied to both new or existing buildings alike. It requires minimal to zero maintenance and as a result allows for significantly lower long term energy costs.

In an age where both businesses and people are ever-continuously looking for opportunities to combine green initiatives with strong economic performance. It is rare to find modern green technologies that satisfy both requirements. PCM represents that rare exception, a truly unique solution that uses yesterdays knowledge to tackle the big environmental problems of today.

Zero Carbon and Energy FreePhase Change Materials (PCMs) are ideal products for thermal management solutions. This is because they store and release thermal energy during the process of melting & freezing (changing from one phase to another). When such a material freezes, it releases large amounts of energy in the form of latent heat of fusion, or energy of crystallisation. Conversely, when the material is melted, an equal amount of energy is absorbed from the immediate environment as it changes from solid to liquid, hence establishing a Passive Cooling e!ect.

Started 10 years ago with my eldest daughter

Emma, Nomad Ideas is a family business which

sources unique and beautiful kilim rugs from

Turkey. Using these rugs we create bespoke

furniture, home accessories, shoes, bags and

many other lovely things for you and your

home.

ϐIstanbul and our contact there soon became a

ϐǤthe business after she gained a distinction

in a three year course from The Association

of Master Upholsterers. She works using the

traditional methods so the beautiful old kilims

have a chance to live another lifetime on a

piece of furniture.

We also sell the rugs themselves. Nothing looks

more beautiful or brightens up a room better

than a kilim, each one tells its own unique

story through pattern and colour, whilst

bringing a warm and homely feel to any space.

With the added bonus of being very hard

wearing!

When needed we use local craftsmen to make

the bases, be it the metal frame work for the

brushed steel fender seats or the wooden

frames for our furniture, they are all designed

to be strong and made to last. This allows us

to make each piece truly bespoke, whether it’s

twisted or straight uprights for your fender or

an unusually shaped stool, it’s all possible.

ϐare usually antique, depending on the

requirements. All are stripped back to the

frame which then is treated and strengthened

before being traditionally re-upholstered.

There is no point putting a precious rug on a

piece of furniture that will not stand the test

of time.

Our business is a family concern so we are

very happy to discuss any design ideas you

may have. Every detail is carefully thought

through and we hope nothing is left to chance.

We’ve made furniture and products to send to

Greece, France, Germany, America and many

other places. Every item is lovingly wrapped

and packed in a crate so it arrives in perfect

condition. We pride ourselves on going the

extra mile to create pieces that will be passed

down, with happy family memories, to your

grandchildren, as we feel this is no less than

these beautiful old kilims deserve.

The New Cultural Centre and

Library in Karlshamn, Sweden,

is designed to gather the city’s

cultural functions under one roof.

schmidt hammer lassen architects

has just won an international

competition to design this 5,000

square metre cultural centre.

Karlshamn will get a sculptural

and flexible building containing

a library, an exhibition area, a

cinema, a tourist office and a café.

It will be the city’s new meeting

place and will embrace diversity.

The building is situated on Östra

Piren between the industrial

harbour, the local folk high school,

the city and the beautiful Swedish

skerries. The facade and roof are

designed to meet the scale and sight

lines of the surroundings hereby

creating a distinctive shape.

“Through a poetic interpretation

of the surroundings we have created

a meeting place, which will be a

striking visual focal point that

connects the city to the landscape

and the water,” stated Ms Trine

Berthold, associate partner at

schmidt hammer lassen architects.

She continued: “The meeting place

is defined by a sculptural, folded

roof made of wood that gathers

activities and visitors in the

building under one roof – which is

both the motto and the main concept

of our design.”

The main access to the Cultural

Centre and Library will be from

the square at Östra Piren. A large

glass facade ensures visual contact

between the inside of the building

and the surroundings. Visitors

will be able to get an overview of

the whole cultural centre from the

information square and the atrium

in the centre of the building. The

different functions are carefully

situated to create synergy while

ensuring open, flexible and

accessible spaces that invite

visitors to interact, be curious

and create.

The facade of the building is clad

with robust wooden lamellas to

minimize solar gain while allowing

visual contact with the inside of

the building. During winter, the

warm light from the building will

appear inviting to visitors. In the

summer, a long bench, stretching

the length of the facade, will invite

passers-by to sit down or engage

in activities around the cultural

centre.

“The New Culture Centre and Library

in Karlshamn is a library of the

future, which is accessible,

diverse and flexible. It is an

example of a reinterpretation of

the Nordic architectural tradition

with a focus on the human scale, the

Nordic light and the use of robust

materials,” explained Mr Kim Holst

Jensen, partner at schmidt hammer

lassen architects.

The New Cultural Centre and Library

in Karlshamn is the latest project in

a long row of libraries designed by

schmidt hammer lassen architects.

This is the third library designed

by the practice in Sweden. In 2006,

the 8,000 square metre library in

Halmstad was inaugurated, and

the extension of the Växjö City

Library was completed in 2003.

Furthermore, schmidt hammer

lassen architects is working on

two libraries in Canada – one in

Halifax and one in Edmonton – and

another library, Dokk 1, in Aarhus,

Denmark. Dokk 1 will be the largest

public library in Scandinavia when

it is finished in 2014.

Safety Tread was approached in the middle of last year by Architects Pascall and Watson to help design and manufacture a bespoke stair nosing for London Heathrow

Airport Terminal 2. A long design and development programme was carried out in house by Bell Plastics. The nosing had to overcome several key features to meet the exact requirements of the project, such as size and weight. It also had to be su!ciently rigid to meet the vast volumes of daily tra!c, not only of footfall but also for constant attack from a vast array of luggage, which was achieved by using an extra thick aluminium profile. The nosing was approved and delivery of the finished nosing’s commenced in November 2012 with the final delivery due in February 2013.

Safety Tread was chosen to develop the product, not only because of their ability and flexibility to design and manufacture a very unique type of safety stair nosing, but also because the products are renowned throughout the industry and amongst architects globally for being of excellent quality and finish whilst o"ering non-slip properties in dry, wet and even greasy environments that far exceed the requirements of the HSE.

The Nosing which was finally chosen for the installation not only looks aesthetically pleasing but the customer will also be reassured that the product will last for many years to come. All Safety Tread products, including the Nosing for Heathrow, are manufactured to outlast and outperform inferior products by several years meaning they are ideal for all applications but also high footfall areas and environmentally challenging conditions.

With over 25 years of manufacturing experience behind us, our products must, by now, have been installed in just about every environment imaginable. Safety tread products are a range of bespoke, premium, high quality anti-slip stair nosings, which are manufactured in the UK. The products are manufactured using recycled aluminium profiles, which when combined with ‘carborundum’ provide a product that is exceptionally long lasting. This is not only beneficial to the environment but also provides a more economical solution than cheaper plastic materials.

The treads will provide excellent slip resistant properties to any staircase, internal or external, be tailor-made to fit the exact dimensions of the stair tread, be provided in any colour and also look extremely professional showing that the owner cares, not only about the image they want to portray but also that they view health and safety as extremely important to the needs of their sta" and customers.

ighting the wayCollingwood Lighting’s products and expertise have been put to good use as part of the renovation of private residence, The Long House in Lindsey, Su!olk.

Used to deliver both practical and decorative lighting throughout the building, a series of Collingwood’s LED ground lights and uplighters have been used in both indoor and outdoor applications.

A combination of Collingwood’s GL008 and GL038A were used to highlight elements of the stunning exterior fascia and gardens – being installed outside, these ground lights in particular were used due to their robust nature. Combining toughened walk over safety glass and marine grade stainless steel these exterior fittings made perfect sense. The LEDs themselves can also be specifically angled to focus on the chosen element - in this case to illuminate the front of the building and several trees within the beautifully landscaped garden.

Internally, Collingwood’s GL019 and GL040 LEDs were used to help draw special attention to period features including beams, walls, stairs and doors. Manufactured with an attractive stainless steel finish, these fittings o!er an outstanding aesthetic that works well with the surrounding décor of The Long House.

Ipswich based electrical contractor, Electricare Contractors Ltd worked on the project and Director, Ben Allen was instrumental in gaining Collingwood the specification. He said: “We were looking to achieve an energy e"cient solution and wanted fixtures that weren’t intrusive once in place. As lighting specialists, working on projects from the very first consultation through to handover, we consult with the client directly to ensure we deliver a tailored solution to meet their needs. Owing to our all encompassing approach, applying careful consideration to the lighting/technical design before carrying out the actual lighting installation, we are able to eliminate the need for separate designers and electrical installers to be involved. With these points in mind, we selected Collingwood’s discreet yet powerful, GL range of LEDs as we were confident they would be right for the job.

These were ideal for this project as it was possible to achieve varying lighting levels, depending on where the lights themselves were installed. A series of the GL038A LEDs for example, were used to light up several

trees surrounding the house. These flood lights run at just 4W, yet supplied ample

output to light the trees to stunning e!ect – o!ering an energy e"cient solution

that achieved the desired result. From an aesthetic perspective, we were able to blend the contemporary look of the lights with the traditional appeal of the building by using modern stainless steel fittings against a traditional oak backdrop – this delivered a stunning end result.”

He continued: “By using indoor or outdoor fittings where required, we were able to use the same LEDs throughout which is testament alone to their versatility. This helped speed up the installation process for us meaning we were able to complete the project in good time – a point of particular note considering the residential nature of the project.”

The GL038A, GL008, GL019 and GL040 groundlights from Collingwood that were used within this project o!er outstanding durability, due in part to their weatherproof nature. Manufactured from 316 marine grade stainless steel and featuring either walk over or drive over tempered glass, the range is suitable for use almost anywhere and looks great once in place thanks to its sleek aesthetics.

The Epson SureColor SC-T7000, SC-T5000 and SC-T3000 4-colour printers o!er fast, reliable printing on coated and non-coated media up to 44-inch (1,118mm), 36-inch (914mm) and 24-inch (610mm) wide respectively. Designed to fit seamlessly into the o"ce environment, the printers feature sleek styling, small footprints and low noise levels, and are operated from the front to allow convenient placement against a wall.

The SC-T7000, SC-T5000 and SC-T3000 are ideal for applications where speed and economy are paramount, such as printing architectural designs and plans, maps, presentations, posters and indoor signage. The printers take just 28 seconds to produce an A1 print in draft mode on plain paper, and o!er optimised running costs with a choice of 700ml, 350ml and 110ml ink cartridge sizes.

Further improving e"ciency, the printers are quick to set up, with automatic photo and matte black ink switching, and are so easy to use that operators do not need special training. All controls are at the front of the printers, while media is fed in at the top. The finished prints emerge at the front, stacking neatly into a basket. Tracking how much paper is left on a roll is simple thanks to media barcode printing.

Martin Johns, market development manager, pro-graphics at Epson UK, says: “When developing a new printer, we always ask our customers what they need. Our customers told us they want a printer that fits easily into their current production environment, so we’ve added an HP-GL emulation mode. Another popular request was an HDD drive for print spooling, so we’ve given all three printers an optional 250GB HDD.”

The printers use Epson’s new UltraChrome XD Ink, which has been specifically developed to produce high-quality, durable prints with deep blacks, a wide colour gamut and crisp, dense lines with a minimum width of 0.02mm. Epson’s Variable-size Droplet Technology brings clarity to fine detail while delivering optimum e"ciency for larger areas of colour.

Helping to reduce impact on the environment, the SC-T7000, SC-T5000 and SC-T3000 use water-based inks and are qualified by ENERGY STAR for their excellent power e"ciency.

As burial field- [Karres en Brands]

Cemeteries have always been, and still are, reflections of society: they

provide an insight into the relationship between the collective and the

individual, the social environment of the time, the overall natural scene, the

funerary culture and developments in the field of design and landscape

architecture.

Karres and Brands created a design for the garden of remembrance of the

Nieuwe Ooster cemetery in Amsterdam, the largest cemetery (in terms of

numbers of graves) in the Netherlands. The Nieuwe Ooster was laid out

in three phases: in 1889, 1915 and 1928. The first and second phases were

designed by Leonard Springer. These sections have a clear spatial quality

all of their own, but the third phase does not share this quality. It bears

a resemblance to the style of Springer, but is not the same. Adaptations

and expansions have left it devoid of structure and identity. The garden of

remembrance lies within this phase.

Instead of spatially linking the three zones, we found it necessary to give

each area its own separate identity. By increasing the contrasts, a clear

triple division of the cemetery is brought about, so that the qualities of

each individual zone are enhanced. A new identity has been created for

the third phase. A robust but simple intervention was called for here. The

basis is a zone with parallel strips of varying widths, each with its own

design principle. Within this unambiguous structure, choices are made

possible for individual wishes. Some of the strips include hedges that

divide the zone into spatial compartments. The existing graveyards and

the garden of remembrance are incorporated into the zone like rooms

with green edges. Birch trees are loosely spread throughout the zone as

a whole. An elongated pond and an urn wall form spatial accents, and a

special destination for cremation ashes.

Like our changing society, the customs and rituals surrounding the burial

of the dead continually endure change. The increasing demand for urn

graves presented the opportunity to create a columbarium which forms an

important spatial accent in the new structure of the crematorium’s garden

of remembrance. The building forms one of the strips that structure the

area, and provides places for 1,000 urns. The columbarium is an elongated

volume dissected by pathways.

The separate elements of the building created in this way are linked by

slanted lines in the exterior walls and roof. A number of rooms to house the

urns are hollowed out within the volume. From the outside of the building

– which is 120 metres long, 5 metres wide and 5 metres high – has the

appearance of an introverted and robust zinc sculpture. From the inside,

the rooms form enclosed, peaceful white interiors. Within the rooms

visitors are sheltered from the surroundings, only the white terrazzo walls

and the sky are visible. A pattern of single and double niches is hollowed

out of the walls. At certain key points there are special niches where

openings in the walls offer a glimpse of the surroundings and let in light.

Rainwater is fast becoming one of our most precious resources.

With climate change creating severe flooding and water stress in the coming years, it makes sense for rainwater to be better managed and used locally, rather than overloading our urban drainage systems.

Flushing our WC’s with drinking quality water, whilst the rainwater overloads our sewers, is a waste of natural resources. The Flowstow® concept improves water e!ciency by harvesting and using rainwater at a reduced capital expense. As the storage tanks are located where normal cisterns would be, it replaces the need for large underground tanks, pumping equipment and the additional pipework found in traditional systems. Flowstow® also reduces the size of any soakaway or attenuation to meet planning conditions.

Flowstow® is suitable for both new and refurbished buildings and conforms to BS 8515.

When looking at an ageing building, few

people cast a critical eye at the state

of the roof. The windows are clean, the

garden tidy and the interior spotless, but

the roof is almost invariably unkempt.

Black moulds hide it’s colour and moss

slowly mats itself in the bonds, so slowly

that few take notice.

The encroachment of grime and moss

has it’s effects : Beyond the architectural

at risk. Doing nothing is ultimately the

expensive option. The risk varies with the

Architects do not seem to enter this

There is no easy answer to the return

Flashing Functionality an Important Consideration in Severe Weather, advises Cavity Trays Ltd Cavity Trays Ltd, the longest-established specialist in its field now has flashing options available across its range of approved cavity trays. There are now four BBA flashing materials from which the client may select: Lead, Synthetic, Copper and Aluminium. This extends the clients options pending the adjacent roof type and finish, location and aesthetics. But, Cavity Trays has announced it is not reducing the dimensions of its flashings, despite alternative manufacturers o!ering trays with flashings that do not match the length of the tray. ‘Our approved trays are accompanied with a performance undertaking’ commented a company spokesperson, ‘and our Type X tray for gable abutments has high-exposure rating. Adequate flashing laps can be critical especially in locations of variable exposure – a view promoted by the LSA. We have experimented with varying flashing dimensions but having identified the adequacy of our current flashing dimensions in relation to tray size and flashing interfacing, and do not wish to reduce the intended cover margins. Further information about the Type X trays can be found in: Gable Abutments, volume 21. Available upon request.

Devon County Council’s appointed consultant, NPS, speci"ed Kemper System’s solvent-free 2K-PUR cold liquid applied system along with the company’s Kempertherm PIR insulation board for a project that was carried out both during the school holiday and within term time. Kemperol 2K-PUR system was the ideal choice, as a cold-applied wet-on-wet system it is quick to install and avoids the need for any hot works on site.www.kempersystem.co.uk

A Room foR LondonPublic bookings to spend a night in A Room for London, a one-bedroom installation on the roof of Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, open on 8 September 2011 (for nights January to June 2012). The second stage of bookings (for nights July–Dec 2012) will open in January 2012. Prices start from £120 (for up to two people).

Perched high above the city, this beautifully crafted space o!ers a unique and playful perspective on an area of London more com- monly seen from river level. With an en-suite double bedroom, kitchenette, library and viewing deck, guests are invited to rest and reflect upon what they see and hear during their one night stay; logging their thoughts, observing cloud patterns, the character of the river and deeper undercurrents.

David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner drew inspiration from the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad whilst in the Congo in 1890, a journey echoed in his most famous work Heart of Darkness. The winning design for the Room was selected from over 500 entries in an open international competi- tion set by Living Architecture and Artangel, in association with Southbank Centre. Living Architecture is a social enterprise that creates opportunities for the public to experience contemporary architecture at first hand and has commissioned five UK holiday homes designed by talented architects.

A Room for London will be a visionary landmark for the city in the year of the London 2012 Games, pre- senting an opportunity, for those in London and beyond, to celebrate and connect to the capital and its cultural past, present and future.

Artangel, in association with the Evening Standard, today launches Ideas for London, a competition to inspire Londoners’ most remarkable proposals for their city. The com- petition is a call for original ideas relating to technology, the environment, social good and everything in between. Ideas can be submitted at anytime from 6 September 2011 – 5 Sep- tember 2012. One winner will be announced each month during 2012, and invited to stay overnight in A Room for London, developing their idea with a number of influential guests.

Ideas for London is part of Artangel’sA Room for London programme of invited guests, which will see internationally acclaimed writers, musicians and artists muse on the city throughout its Olympic year. The programme also includes A London Address, a series of reflections by writers on London and its cur- rent place in the world, and Sounds from a Room, a sequence of webcast performances by musicians from across the globe created above the busy metropolis. A dedicatedA Room for London website will broadcast writings, images, songs, blogs and live events opening up multiple conversations within the capital and beyond.

A Room for London is part of the London 2012 Festival – as the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad this UK-wide festival will feature leading artists from around the world from 21 June – 9 September 2012.

Farewell BSFB

reaking-up is tough. A swirl of emotions - the dissolved,

personal relationship, the pain of compromise, the small

victories, the dim memory of early romance......and now, the

need to move on.

Blackburn Central High School opened in September. I was the

Project Architect from inception to completion and now it is

½RMWLIH3RISJXLIPEWXSJXLI&YMPHMRK7GLSSPWJSVXLI*YXYVITVSNIGXW%½REPLYVVELMRHEVOXMQIWXLIPEWXTSWXSJEGEQTEMKRlaunched with high aspirations, mired in bureaucracy, put on trial

and now summarily guillotined by the coalition government. I

struggle now to make sense of it all and to consider rationally

the achievements and mistakes of the project. Perhaps I am still

too close and I ‘need time’ but here is my note of absolution

and exorcism nonetheless:

Blackburn Central High replaced three schools, including a

local special needs school. It brought together mainstream

and special needs children from different communities within

Blackburn. Racial tensions are never too far from the surface in

this part of the country and the need to encourage cohesion and

understanding between Asian-heritage and White communities

was of paramount concern for the project. Even the location

of the main entrance had to be carefully positioned so that it

didn’t favour one community or the other.

BBC’s Panorama programme recently depicted the lives of

some of the inhabitants of the local Shadsworth estate. Many

local people felt the programme unfairly demonised the place

and would only reinforce the negative perceptions, leading to

further degeneration. Blackburn Central High School was built

for these children and others locally. It was meant to provide a

high-quality facility for them and for the wider community, to

say loudly that they matter, that they have a future that is worth

investing in and that their aspirations are worthy of support.

It was to be the proverbial beacon of hope, the pioneering

spaceship landed to provide a focal point of inspiration,

education and excellence.

I think, on a good day, that most of those original intentions have

here, in a way which expresses the very urgent and real, social

and educational intentions for the project.

-FEXXPIHJSVXLIFSPHVIHWXVMTIW8LIZMWYEPMWEXMSRW[IVIVIZMWIHten times to show different colours and the pupils apparently

favoured blue - a colour associated with the town and one

it would provide the best contrast, both with the rest of the

added bonus. Eventually I won the battle. Not exactly a user-led

piece of design but I think they’ll thank me for it in the long run.

My break-up blues have subsided for now and the memories
