PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE23rd Sunday of the Year A, September 06, 2020

How are we taking the challenges of life?

It is hard to imagine that we are already in the ninth month of the year 2020. What a year for all of us! The pandemic has become the defining event of the year. How are we responding to it? As I think about it, I remember an inspirational story I got from a friend some years ago. You may know the story already but permit me to share it:

Once upon a time, a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she did not know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.

Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied. “Look closer”, he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.“Father, what does this mean?” she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs, and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity – the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. “Which are you,” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? “In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us. Which one are you?

What are the challenges you are facing in your life, like the boiling water in the story? How are we taking those challenges of life? During this month, the church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on September 14th and the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15th. On the cross, Jesus experienced tremendous pain and suffering. He gave everything including his life for our salvation. The apparent defeat on the cross was his vic-tory and glorification, our salvation. Our Lady endured much pain and sorrow gazing at her son as he endured the pains of the cross. She offered up her pain and sorrow for the salvation of the world. We turn to her for strength and consolation. May our challenges of life become a way of transformation for us and hope in the redeeming power of the cross. Jesus, I trust in you!

The art of reconciliation: Our gospel reading teaches the art of reconciliation. No human person is an island. We are created as social beings to interact and relate with one another. This interaction sometimes leads to misun-derstanding, conflict, quarrels, and people offending each other. When conflicts arise, what are we to do? When brothers and/or sisters have problems communicating with each other and they are fighting, what is to be done to restore peace? The first approach that Jesus gave is to dialogue with the offender. Jesus instructed the offended party to reach out and seek reconciliation with the offender. This sounds absurd since our common reasoning is that the one who is at fault should be the one to apologize. However, Jesus wants the person who was offended to reach out first just as God reached out to us while we were still sinners. When the first attempt fails, Jesus asked the offended party to make other attempts at reconciliation. We might say that this is difficult to do but it is not impos-sible. Reconciliation frees the mind and liberates the person. It heals wounds. When the offended approaches the offender, a great sense of care, concern, and love is shown. Often times, the offender apologizes for the wrong. But even when this does not happen, we must not close our hearts to loving the individual. That is why St Paul says today that the only thing we are to owe anyone is love. “Love is the fulfillment of the law,” he said. Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSPPastor

SUPPORT OUR PARISH

August 23rd: “God’s love—in-dividual, real, unchanging—is the true source of our worth, identity, and dignity. It real-ly is not a question of who we are, but rather whose we are. Because his love will nev-er change, nothing can re-duce our God-given dignity, and nothing can diminish the immeasurable worth of our lives.”

Stewardship Reflections

September 06 - Stewardship Call: “You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel…” - EZEKIEL 33:7. Many of us are generous with our gifts. However, many of us are not generous in proportion to the gifts we have been given. How often do we give at the minimum level required? Remember, the Lord calls us to Steward-ship, where we nurture and develop our gifts. He calls us to be generous with all the gifts He has given us, especially the one that means the most to us.

Volviendo a ella preguntó. "Hija, ¿qué ves?" "Patatas, huevos y café", respondió a toda prisa.
