Hands-On Archaeology & Institute
Alexandria Archaeology Institute: Gain hands-on experience in site-excavation methods and record keeping. Learn how to use a transit; process and catalog artifacts in the laboratory; and interpret the information. Accessible by Metro. $475.00 per person. Applicants must be at least 16 years old. The field hours (approx. 15 hours) and laboratory (approx. 5 hours) may be counted toward the Virginia Archaeological Technician Certification Program requirements. Registration fee includes morning coffee each day, and opening reception on Thursday evening, three box lunches, and a closing reception Sunday evening.

WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 27 -ALEXANDRIA
Lecture Excavations at the Contrabands and Freedmen's Cemetery and the Concept of the Proper Coffin in the Mid-Nineteenth Century: A series of four archaeological excavations were conducted here to prepare for developing the property by the City into a Memorial Park. Excavation and documentary research results indicate that there was an idea of what a "proper" coffin was like in mid-nineteenth century America. The history of the cemetery, some results of the excavations and the idea of a "proper" coffin will be presented in a PowerPoint lecture by one of the project researchers, Dr. Steven J. Shephard, an archaeologist with Alexandria Archaeology.

Ofrenda - Art for the Dead is an exhibition of local artists' shrines, altars, paintings, photography, music dancing, magic, and spoken word based on the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) tradition. Artist-made Dia de los Muertos altars and ofrendas will draw the beloved dead to visit their loved ones, feast on their favorite food, and drink and listen to their favorite music. The event will include multiple performances, special activities, parade, masked ball, and reception. No Cover, Cash Bar.

Forgotten Cemeteries Heritage Trail Bike Ride: A 14-mile guided loop of Alexandria's forgotten burial sites. Exhibit Jamestown Settlement Galleries Chronicle the nation's 17th-century beginnings in Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures. On exhibit is archaeological material from Paleo- to Woodland-period Virginia Indian sites, including an early 17th-century Paspahegh town in close proximity to the English settlement at Jamestown, and from 17th-century colonial sites, including possibly the earliest slave quarter found in Virginia.

ONGOING IN YORKTOWN
Exhibit Yorktown's Sunken Fleet features the Betsy, a ship sunk during the 1781 Siege of Yorktown. The Betsy, a British troop transport, was the subject of an underwater archaeological excavation in the 1980s. Among objects exhibited courtesy of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources are regimental buttons that led to the identity of the ship. Items ranging from barrel parts to dining utensils provide insight into daily life and work on board a ship during the Revolution.

Werowocomoco: Seat of Power: Artifacts spanning 10,000 years from Werowocomoco, site of the capital of the Powhatan Indian chiefdom at the time English colonists arrived in Virginia in 1607, are on exhibit for the first time in a museum setting. A selection of archaeological objects from the collections of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources complements the Werowocomoco material. The importance of this location, which has been the subject of archaeological research since 2001, in Virginia Indian history and its role in early contact between Powhatan and English cultures is explored in the exhibition.

Lecture Archives, Graves and Bulldozers: Tips for Finding, Documenting and Protecting Cemeteries: Audiences will learn about a regional survey of cemeteries, as well as tips for documenting and protecting cemeteries. We will also explore the value of cemetery records for tracing family histories and learn about Dead on the Web, an online research tool available to anyone. Hands-On Archaeology & Kid's Program
Gravely Graves: Kids and adults can join a VMNH educator at the Gravely Nature Preserve. Participants will hike on the Jone's Cliff trail through the preserve to the Burgess Family Cemetery located on the property. The group will do a cemetery "scavenger hunt" using the information on the headstones. Participants should meet at the picnic shelter at 3:00pm. There will be a fee of $5.00 each.

Monticello Archaeology Lab Open House and Plantation Landscape Walking Tour: The lab will feature displays of recently excavated artifacts with interpretations of our current work. Interpretive walking tours of Monticello's vanished plantation landscape will last about an hour and a half and cover some rough terrain. Monticello archaeologists will
guide visitors to sites where we have worked during several past summers, including a slave cemetery, and will discuss our archaeological understanding of the dynamics of Jefferson's Monticello plantation
