Promoting the archaeology and history of Shropshire
The Shropshire Archaeological and Historical Society, registered charity no. 511564, was formed in 1877. In 1923 it amalgamated with the Shropshire Parish Register Society. We campaign for the recording and protection of Shropshire’s rich and varied archaeological heritage. We also promote and publish original research into the county’s exciting history and prehistory.

What we do
Members receive a News Letter twice a year with summaries of recent work and discoveries of local archaeological and historical interest and news of events. Members also receive our Transactions, in which important and scholarly papers on the history and archaeology of Shropshire are published.
The Society also publishes other books and booklets on the history and archaeology of Shropshire (usually available at a discount to members), and transcripts of parish registers.
The Society owns a considerable library of learned journals, to which members may have access.
The Society helps to raise funds to ensure that archaeological finds are available for the local community to see and study, to preserve such finds locally, and to assist original research into our past.
The Society organizes a rich and varied programme of events throughout the year. These include guided walks and visits to historic sites in the summer months, a programme of talks throughout the autumn and winter, occasional day-schools, and an annual lecture.
