The name of Russian Hill should go back to the Gold Rush-era when settlers discovered a small Russian cemetery at the top of the hill. Those bodies were never officifally identified, however, it assumed that those bodies probably belonged to Russian fur-trader and sailors from nearby Fort

“The Crookedest Street in the World”The block of Lombard between Hyde and Leaven-worth Streets began as a straight, cobblestone street with a 27% grade. In 1920s, peope lived on this street wanted cars, howeve, the street was too steep for vehicles to climb. Therefore, Carl Henry came up with the idea of transform into a curved street. “The Crookedest Street” was constructed in 1922. At the beginning, it was a two-way, brick paved street. The curved switchbacks were installed and the grade was reduced to 16%, which consists of eight turns. In 1939, the street modifiied into one-way due to the overloaded traffic. In high

What is a cable car? Cable cars were invented to take place of carts and carriage pulled by horses. the cable car is pulled along a rail system by a channel running underground at a constant speed. The driver, or “Gripman”, pulls a lever to activate the “grip” which is the part that grabs onto the moving cable. If the driver wants to stop, he just simply releases the grip and

activates the brakes. The public service of cable cars began on September 1, 1877. However, in the late 1880’s and early 1890’s, the electric street car was coming into favor. Due to the cost of electric street cars were twice as less to build and 6 times less than operate the cable cars. The company operated cable cars attempted to convert many of the cable lines to electric cars. Althought

San Francisco is the 4th most populous city in California and the 12th in the United States. It is notable for its chiliy summer fog, steep hills, Victo-rian and modern architectures, Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and Chinatown. PROPOSAL STIE 1Ina Coolbirth Park was named after Ina Coolbirth (1842 - 1928), who was the poet laureate of California, colleague of Jack London, Isadora Duncan, George Sterling and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The tiny park’s terraces are caved from a hill so steep that it is difficult to see if anyone else is there or not. It is one of teh city’s magic hidden gardens. The hibitat of decks and flowers frames a meditative setting and spectacular view of the bay peeking out from among the trees.

PROPOSAL STIE 2The second proposal is at the end of Vallejo Street which facing Taylor Street and Ina Coolbirth Park. The reason I choose it is because of the unique and steep slope on the site and the ability of viewing the whole

San Francisco.

The Parking area at the corner of Columbus AveBetween Bay Street and Francisco Street

FINAL PICK OF SITEFinally, I chose the parking area on Columbus Ave, in between Francisco and Bay Street. I felt the first diagonal street of San Francisco and the relationship of global and local are interesting ideas that I would want to continue work on and explore for the rest of the

semester.

After the second iteration, instead of using the actual material from the original models. I begun to try other materials for the tension and compression, and opening it up with cutting the mesh into strings.
