LEARNING PORTFOLIO

THE FIRST GESTURAL MODEL WAS TO EXPLORE MORE OF THE LINEAR DESIGN. COMPARING FROM MY LAST PROJECT, I THOUGHT THE LINEAR & RECTILINEAR WAS MORE INTERESTING AND MORE APPEALING. (GESTURE ON LEFT, PREVIOUS PROJECT ON RIGHT).

THE PROPERTIES ON THIS GESTURAL MODEL I WANTED TO EXPLORE WAS THE COMPARISON BETWEEN OPEN AND CLOSED SPACES, WHILE HAVING AN OPAQUE OPENING TO HELP CONTRAST BETWEEN THE LIGHT AND THE DARK.

COMING FROM THE GESTURAL MODEL, I DESIGNED A MODEL HOUSE THAT HAD THE SIMILAR PROPERTIES. THE ROOF IS SLOPED DOWNWARDS WHILE HAVING THE FAÇADE OF THE BUILDING WITH BOTH CURVILINEAR AND RECTILINEAR. THE REASON FOR THE CURVILINEAR WAS TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY INTERESTING PROPERTIES BETWEEN THEM AND IF IT WAS WORTH THE RISK IN EXPLORATION.

THE DOWNSIDE OF THIS PARTICULAR MODEL WAS THAT THE MODEL DID NOT HAVE ANY MEANING TO IT. THE CURVILINEAR AND RECTILINEAR SIDES DID NOT RESPOND TO ANYTHING, THUS LEADING INTO A DEEPER EXPLORATION.

The idea evolved from combining both rectilinear and curvilinear by using a different design. Instead of having rectilinear as the floor plan, it is now integrated into the windows to create various views from the houses. The inspiration is based off of the houses in the San Francisco hills. The two buildings, house and

gallery, is a mirror image of the way the houses are formed and arranged within the hills.

From the bottom of the hill, there is handicap accessible ramps leading into the gallery and each platform sets a different view towards the San Franciscan hills.

Each of the ramps are formed in a curvilinear shape to give the viewers a curvilinear feel towards the top.

The major flaw on this design was the landscape. The landscape was not developed well since it had many awkward slopes from various

places. The landscape did not seem to have a connection between the intended views and the properties of the buildings.
