INTRODUCTION:  This  porKolio  contains  all  the  learning  progress  that  I  have  learned  in  arch  20  this  semester.  From  a  simple  dog  house  with  a  paper  thin  wall    to  the  complex  cabin  building.  Indeed,  everything  is  born  with  naïve  and  gradually  grow  up  to  mature  complexity.  I  learn  how  to  use  several  tools  in  SketchUp  from  the  easy(push/pull,  scale  and  rotate)  to  hard(sandbox  and  followme).  All  the  tools  I  learned  in  this  class  is  for  expressing  ideas  more  accurately.  I  can  accomplish  my  thoughts  in  a  digital  world.  Let’s  start  my  sketchUp  journal  and  find  how  I  have  grown  up  in  this  lovely  class.

Page 4: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

The first practice in arch 20 is build a dog house. The very first time I learned several basic but important tools in SketchUp. This dog house has some scale problem. Steve fits better in this house, not dog.

Dog House First Draft

Page 5: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

In the second draft, I changed the scale of the dog house and made some stairs, but in this stage I didn’t learn how to use follow-me tool to make stairs, I just use push-pull instead. Then I went to 3D warehouse to find the models of dog and trees. However, I was constraint by this formal dog house, I could make something more creative.

Crazy Cube Arrays in space

Reflections Strengths: •  Successful create cube, transformed

into a component, and replicated multiple times to create this complex arrays.

•  Zoomed into the arrays, turned my shadows on, and place several human figures for scale to create a dramatic shot.

Challenges: •  I need to learn how to use rapid

visualization techniques to hand draw something similar to what I produce in SketchUp.

Page 8: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Floor Patterns Study Front View

•  In this stage, we learned the floor patterns would influence rooms visual experiences. The horizontal floor patterns will make the room more shallow, yet the vertical floor patterns give more depth to this room.

•  First we practice drawing about the floor patters. we could combine different kinds of geometrical shapes in this design. Then we use SketchUp to draw them on computer.

•  Another interesting thing we learn is that we can make scenes for each room. It’s like a short movie which is more attractive and comprehensive than just a single image. It’s very useful when I explain my project to others because the short movie can give consecutive and dynamic scenes in so many different point of views.

•  To make scenes we need to make layers first, SketchUp can hide the structure when we don’t need it by defining the structure layers .

•  The improvement I need in this study is that I could make some floor patterns more complex just like what I draw in hand.

Insert Malevich and the blue sky picture in SketchUp, create a 3 dimensional buildings by tracing the 2 dimensional shapes. •  It is very convenience to use X-

rays in this practice •  First tracing all the shapes I

selected to transform then in to three dimensional building

•  Frequently using pushup tool to stretch the shapes

•  Keep the roofs of the buildings/top view of the whole structure same as the Malevich picture

•  transform structures under roofs

Page 12: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

FollowMe Tool practice This class we learned about a new tool which is powerful, especially when we want create the handrails. We can define the shape and the pass way of the structure, which can go any directions.

Page 13: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Rotate Tool Practice This tool give us a convenience way to change the direction of a structure. We even could press “ctrl” to copy the whole structure and rotate to make several same structures which aim at different directions to create a new structure which have much more complexity.

Page 14: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Campidoglio Inspired Piazza Practice •  First we use polygon tool to draw a 24 sides circle •  Use offset tool to make a smaller one circle inside the bigger one •  Arc tool helps to draw cures connected the small circle with the big one •  Then I use rotate tool to rotate a specific angle times eleven •  Use offset tool to every single closed shapes (what Jerry taught us is breaking the whole circle in to two piece

and just focus one half of it. After finishing all the offset, we could make a cope of this half piece then use scale tool to change the direction

•  Next draw a much smaller and 24 sides circle to make the sun-like shape in the center of the graph •  Color the floor with color tool •  Make stairs and find a status in 3D warehouse

Page 15: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Campidoglio Inspired Piazza with status

From this practice, I have learn how to use sketch up in a correct way to be more efficient and save time. Especially in this complicated shape drawing. If the shape that I need to draw has an obvious symmetry, I can just draw half of it and use ctrl + move tool and scale tool to create another half piece.

Walls and Windows Studies

Elements influence the experience of a

wall

•  The height

•  The thickness

•  The windows inserted in to the wall

•  The shapes—flat or curved

The violation of the walls and the windows inserted in the wall could make a whole different experience when a person stand beside. A low walls may become a chair which people can sit on it. A high and thick wall may give people a sense of stable. And if we create windows on this thick wall, they give the a different influence which give a breath of the whole structure.

Page 17: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Intersect Studies

In order to create a irregular and complex geometry •  Create some basic geometries •  Move and intersect one with another •  Delete the surface that I don’t want This studies help us to learn hoe to create irregular geometry. There are lots of variations when we try to alter the basic geometry.

Paper Airplane Flotilla – Intercept and Folding

This class we learn how to folding a paper airplane in SkethUp in order to practicing the Rotate Tool. Starting with a piece of paper, then draw some line on it as the rotation axis. Then Folding a airplane in SketchUp is just like how we fold a paper airplane in real life, which is really interesting. It is really cool when we put the shadows on our paper airplane army.

Page 19: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Pavilion with Folded Canopy

Page 20: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Pavilion with Folded Canopy •  Initially, we just start with a paper-thin, using the rotate tool to fold a ceiling. •  Use Ctrl + Move tool to double the ceilings to make more complexities. •  Then we added the base, walls, stairs and the handrails. •  Make some specific design on the walls, give more dynamic sense on the whole structure •  Moreover, add a new style which make the building more attractive There is a huge difference between different styles. What a chose is the Pen Black in Sketchy Edges and changing the front and back colors in Face Settings, then turn on the X-ray, and give colors for sky and floor. These two styles give me huge different experience about the building I have made. One is more concentrated on shade and light, one is frame structure and colors.

I woke up in the middle of several sheep. Where am I? some manor?

Across the tree branches, its seems an old house not very far from me. Maybe I need to have a look If I can find some one who can tell me about something .

I pass a small pound which has some carps in it. I can’t stop image sitting under the tree and read books beside the pound.

Wow. This flower parterre is like a fantasy which makes me want to stay here forever.

When I raise my head I see the house I just saw. Will there be some one waiting for me?

I find a woman who is looking for me. Hah, she is my wife. I just fall in to a dream in this peaceful wonderland.

Page 24: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Strength:

•  Having a pass way leads tourists to a journey.

•  Using SandBox tool to create the hills

•  Adding some details to the journey such as sheep,

pound and flower ocean.

•  Colored the pathway with tiles.

Weakness:

•  When I was using Stamp tool, I didn’t notice I

create a extremely cliffy slop that very hard to

let tourists clam.

•  I should make some pathway to the front door of

the house.

Process:  The Home Assignment encourage us to measure the dimension of our own home and accomplish our home in SketchUp. I decided to make the first floor of my home in China. I called my family help me to measure our home and gave me the rough data. The real situation might be a little bit different from the model I crated there because the electric system and some pipelines may hide in the way that couldn’t be measured. I just simplified these complex electric and heat system and made the wall into simple wall. Then I made the furniture and arranged them in the place they stay in my home.

Strength:  •  Correct measurement and scale •  Accurate arrangement of furniture •  Well colored wall and skin •  Pathway & stairs •  Some details such as the plant, wash sink and dishes on

the table Weakness: •  Lack details on the window frame •  Even made some details but not enough •  Didn’t draw the second floor of my home which has the

bedrooms and major bathroom.

Furniture:  •  List the major furniture that I need in this assignment •  Draw them one by one. I draw from biggest one to

smallest one and make the individual furniture in to a group

•  Add some details on the furniture 1.  Handles on the bookcase and refrigerator. 2.  Computer and mouse which I found in 3D

Warehouse, putting them on the desk 3.  Dishes and candles on the dinning table 4.  Make the details and the furniture in to a group

•  Arrange them in to different room, at the same time thinking about what furniture I missed in the list

Photo  Matching

Page 35: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

In  these  classes  we  learned  how  to  transform  a  2D  photo  to  a  3D  building  by  using  SketchUp  Match  Photo  tool.  From  the

confined  photo,  we  need  to  figure  out  the  perspechve  relahonship  and  make  rahonal  extension.  Each  line  shown  up  in  photo  has

to  make  sense  in  our  own  drawing.

•  First,  open  the  windows-‐Match  photo  and  insert  the  photo  in  to  SketchUp

•  Correct  the  red  and  green  perspechve  lines  to  have  correct  vanish  points.

•  Use  Steve  to  nohce  the  scale  of  the  building

•  Follow  the  lines  shown  on  the  photo  and  expand  them

•  Considering  other  photos  to  figure  out  what  is  this  building  exactly  looks  like  in  other  point  of  view

•  Make  a  circulahon  of  this  building  which  could  make  a  story  board  ajer

•  Draw  the  details  such  as  the  handrails,  plants,  café  tables  and  chairs,  umbrellas  and  car.

Page 36: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new
Page 37: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

There  would  be  some  differences  between  the  SketchUp  model  and  the  real  picture,  but  the  circulahon  makes  sense.  People  can  go  up  stairs  from  the  lej  stairs  and  sit  in  the  café  corner  which  has  umbrella  to  prevent  the  harsh  sunlight.  From  the  café  corner  people  can  see  the  courtyard  on  the  first  floor,  or  they  can  move  to  the  balcony  on  the  right  side.

Page 38: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

•  If  people  choose  to  step  to  the  right,  they  can  use  the

stairs  with  handrails  on  the  right  side  to  get  in  to

second  floor.

•  Picture  2  show  the  view  when  sinng  on  the  stairs

which  providing  a  narrow  view  come  across  the  aisle.

Final  Project

Page 43: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new
Page 44: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Project Orders: Perspective/ 3D Modeling •  3D model with exterior, interior, and site; include

entourage; shades and shadows •  Longitudinal and transverse section perspectives •  Animated tour Orthographic Projections/ 2D Graphics •  Site plan with roof plan •  Main and upper floor plans •  Building Sections, longitudinal and transverse •  Exterior elevations

Methods to Accomplishment: •  First use the door as the “ruler” to measure and

calculate the scale of the building from the plan and section

•  Use the proportion of the door to make deduction of the length, width and even the height.

•  Creating the elevation: the pillars underneath holding the whole structure, the second floor and the stairs which make the circulation from ground in to the building.

•  Making plan of the bathroom, open kitchen area and sleeping area.

•  Put the details in to the building, such as the celling lamp, furnishes and living goods

Page 45: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

The Proper Use of Section Tool:

•  When finished the whole drawing. we can use section tool to cut through a ideal section which could help people see exactly what is inside the structure without the disturb of the wall.

•  Whether from the top or font view. People can clearly see what happened inside the building.

•  Using section tool can also help us to find some errors because the proportion is so obvious from the section view.

The Proper Use of the X-ray •  Using X-ray with parallel view can achieve the similar effect

as the section tool does. •  Is can clearly see what is inside the building, the proportion

of the floors and the elevation. •  See without walls disturb •  However, X-ray barely shows the front-back relationship

between the objects inside the building.

Page 46: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new
Page 47: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new
Page 48: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Details in side the building: •  Spiral stairs in some way save the space and keep the

space open. •  The living room, sleeping area and open kitchen can all

accept sun light during the daytime, because of the French sash.

•  People can also go to the outside balcony and there is a deck chair for sunbath

•  The book shelf besides the wall gives people a reading area

•  The dinning table is closed to the open kitchen •  The sleeping area is on the second floor. The close

distance to the celling gives a sense of safety when people sleep.

Strength and Weakness of the French Sash: •  Strength: •  Collect more sunlight than the typical windows •  Sunlight through the French sash can heat the building

during the daytime and keep the room warm during the night

•  Weakness: •  Although the huge transparent windows provide good

view of the outside nature, they have less ability to keep the privacy of the sleeping area.

Household can use a “smart glass that can change color from the out side during the night for these huge windows.

Exercise  SketchUp  in  102  Project

Page 52: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

In Arch 102, we have a project about designing a building located in the borderline between Navajo nation and Utah. The building must provide the facilities include: community space, sleeping area, exhibit room, meditation room and solar collection. After making several real models, I began to use SketchUp to express my idea. I found a lot of convenience when I was using SkethchUp to create my models, because I could copy the same structure and use the scale and move tool to accomplish the complexity. Moreover, I also found my skill of using SketchUp is not enough when I was making the glass bridge. I need practice more.

Page 53: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new
Page 54: Arch 20 Final portfolio-new

Conclusion:  Before  I  took  Arch  20,  I  have  no  idea  of  how  to  make  a  digital  drawing  on  computer.  What  I  could  do  to  express  my  architectural  idea  was  making  some  hand-‐drawing.  However,  when  I  finished  my  final  project  and  retrospect  about  the  first  prachce-‐the  Dog  House,  I  realized  how  much  I  have  learned  in  this  class.  I  even  apempt  to  use  SketchUp  in  my  Arch  102  class.  Although  I  might  have  some  problem  about  some  details  when  I  was  drawing  the  digital  model,  I  knew  how  to  solve  them.  Ajerward,  I  can  use  SketchUp  whenever  I  need  it.  Overall,  I  spent  a  great  hme  in  this  amazing  class.
