ArcGIS 10 at Purdue

ArcGIS 10 has arrived and with it comes some changes in how the software is licensed and therefore installed and authorized. Use this document as a quick start, but it will behoove you to also consult the on-board documentation and Esri web help materials at support.esri.com.

First, a quick tour of what's new can be found here.

Next, use this matrix to determine which "flavor" of ArcGIS is right for you.

Here are some pre-installation notes from Larry Biehl:

ArcGIS 10 has specific hardware and software requirements. It does not work on all computers. Before installing, please check this site:http://resources.arcgis.com/content/arcgisdesktop/10.0/arcgis-desktop-system-requirements.

That site includes a tester to tell you if the computer you are using can run ArcGIS 10.

Some features of ArcGIS Desktop require a minimum installation of **Microsoft Internet Explorer** Version 7.0 or 8.0. If you do not have an installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7.0/8.0, you must obtain from Microsoft and install it prior to installing ArcGIS Desktop.

Note: ArcGIS Desktop geoprocessing tools require that Python 2.6.x and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are installed; and the ArcGIS media will do this for you. If you choose the Python folder location, remember there can be NO spaces in the folder names of a Python install.

You must follow this step before installation of ArcGIS: Install Microsoft WinHelp patch for Windows 7 and Windows Vista, because WinHlp32 will not function on Windows 7 and Windows Vista without this patch. "This is a known issue with Windows." Get it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607

Video support is required: "24 bit capable graphics accelerator, plus OpenGL version 2.0 runtime and Shader Model 3.0 or higher is recommended."

Now, just in case, here are instructions on how to install software from the .iso you downloaded.

Here is how to authorize the concurrent-use flavor using ArcGIS Administrator.

the *new* license server URL is wpvappkey01.itap.purdue.edu

Here is how to authorize the single-use flavor using ArcGIS Administrator.

OR

A new feature with v. 10 is concurrent use checkout, which you can read about here.

AND...

Instructions for this procedure are here.

Presuming successful installation, authorize with one of the following options:

Mac & Linux Users -- this documentation has been lightly tested against a

Windows 7 environment running inside of VirtualBox. While I make no

guarantees and promise no support, it appears to work just fine.

Here are some post-installation notes from Larry Biehl:

On some Windows 7 computers ArcMap hangs on launch: The installation looked good and ArcCatalog would launch but ArcMap hangs and screen is blank. We discovered that the default.gdb was corrupted and ArcMap basically kept trying to create a "new" default geodatabase, however, all of these were corrupted also. There were literally thousands of default.gdb files on this machine. To see if you have the same issue, find the folder where the defualt.gdb is kept, usually it is in your user profile. For example, on my Windows 7 machine it's in c:\users\Larry\MyDocuments\ArcGis. If you have many defualt.gdb folders then you likely have the same issue, which is a problem in operating system with the subprogram MSXML4. You need to delete all the "default.gdb" files and then download and install of MSXML4 SP3 from this Microsoft site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=en This cleared up my problem.

On Macs: Re: Problem with ArcMap 10 hanging - I was able to get ArcMap 10 to run in Parallels by turning off "Share Mac OS X folders with Windows" within Parallels. The setting is under the Devices / Shared Folders - menu. I found that if this setting is not turned off then ArcMap essentially won't start.
