By early 1949, Arborite was being advertised as the “only all-Canadian” laminate on the market, available in 35 solid colors, as well as a series of five colored fabric designs, two tones of marble and a wide variety of simulated wood grains.

We were born out of a deeply held respect for the forests of Canada.

In the 1940s, the Howard Smith Paper Mills wanted to find a way to repurpose waste from the pulping and paper-making processes. Howard Smith, the founder of the company, aspired to preserve the forests of Canada for generations to come; utilizing waste was a way to make the forest more valuable and, in turn,

more carefully managed. Arborite was created as a way to reuse the resins that are by-products of the trees when they are pulped into paper.

Arborite has been Canada’s leading manufacturer of High Pressure Decorative laminate since our founding in 1948.
