Arborist—What do They Do?

This is a person who works in the field of arboriculture, which is the science of cultivating trees by planting them, selecting ones for a specific purpose, and caring for trees. Another name for an arborist is tree surgeon, because they help to maintain the health of the trees. To do this they may use a number of techniques.

They may be called to perform tasks that will have a positive impact on the life of a tree, which can include:

Shaping or pruning the foliage on the tree Treating trees with different material to clear up some condition that is threatening to kill

it like blight, which is a form of tissue damage that is caused by a colony of infectious organisms like fungus or virus

Forming surgery on the tree that can range from new small trees to ones thousands of years old

Some may choose to work with all trees while others may specialize in a particular type of tree. To become an arborist involves getting the proper credentials and training. When doing your training your ultimate goal should be a certified arborist. This means that you have not only the correct educational credentials but have at least three years of verifiable experience working as an arborist. If you do not want to pursue this certification you can choose to get the working and educational credentials to become a Certified Arborist Technician. In this profession there is less testing and training.

To become certified you will need to pass an exam but each arborist field has their own set of required credentials and guidelines. There are six different arborist certifications according to the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). In some locales an arborists are not required to

have certification so check with your local and state requirements needed to work as an arborists. On the ISA website you will find what credentials and knowledge you need to become certified. When you receive certification from ISA it is good world-wide.

When you are an arborist, whether certified or a technician, you can find employment in private research for industry, work in local and state parks, in national forests, and recreation facilities. Some even decide to work as a freelancer and often work in consultation with businesses like the pulp wood industry or landscapers helping their business ensure the health of the trees they have planted. They do this by looking at trees to make sure they are healthy, there are no bug infestations, fungus on the tree, or anything else that can make the tree sick or kill it.

This is a great job opportunity for those who prefer to work in the outdoors and loves to see things grow and be healthy.
