The ramp hall of the Barcelona Museum exemplifies a clear movement through space with rectilinear planes, pilotis and light as a modulation system.

"Meier's masterful use of materials -- pristine white aluminum panels, glass, stucco, and granite -- and characteristic modern style emphasize a play of solid and void, light and shadow, through the museum's fluid, geometric form" -Kelly Minner

BARCELONA, SPAIN

The louvers act as filters for the light and creates beams to further enhance the notion of movement through space. Contemporary artworks are exhibited with this opportunity as visitors experience the passing time and space of the passageway.

"With its enormous glass windows and strongly geometric architecture, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art is in itself a work of modern art. -Nicholas Socrates

The Jubilee Church symbolizes the shape of a crown and resides in Rome, Italy. The Ara Pacis Museum and the Jubilee Church both have partitions and hierarchy of spaces within from the relation of the main building and it’s entrance. The overhang in the facade of both buildings contrasts the adjacent spaces to create a more dramatic effect.

Whether it is the experience of entering the grand hall of a church or a relatively dim lobby, Meier considers the spaces between exterior and interior and constitutes a flow of smaller space to a larger space.

The clear windows between the circles, along the roof and the perimeter of the building at floor level cast different shadows and play along the white interior of the church depending on: season, weather and time of day. The effect created is intense and ethereal at times as it can envelope a person from all sides. Meier used the curved shells to create a luminous spacial experience while the shafts of light within and the play of light serve to be a metaphor for the presence of God.

“Light is the protagonist of our understanding and reading of space” -Richard Meier

The Arp Museum, located in Rolandseck, Germany, is built to integrate, to respond, and to echo the forms of the region with series of medieval castles that line a stretch of the Rhine River.

The Arp museum overhangs Kunstler-Bahnhof for the Arts, a former historic village railway station, that is located base of bank-side mountain. The tunnel extends under the railway tracks of the train station acts as a portal that connects and leads visitors to the main building of the Arp Museum.

This design sequence emphasizes ideal relationships between interior, exterior, past and present. An unorthodox type ofpromenade through the entire museum becomes a journey through the different scales and tensions of space.

"The design of the Arp Museum represents a unique and seamless integration of history, art, architecture and nature. " -Kelly Minner

With the application of a common theme and philosophy, Meier generates an endless amount of variation on architectural form. His ideas meet his essential criteria of context, space, light and geometrical alignment. Meier will always approach his designs in a traditional way and set new boundaries for timeless ideas.
