Ara GülerPARISGLOBE
Ara Güler was born in Istanbul in 1928.After initial training as an economist, hebegan his photographic career in the1950's as a staff reporter for the YeniIstanbul daily and then for the magazineHayat. Earnng a living as a photographer inTurkey was not a simple matter at thattime. Güler rapidly began working for inter-national magazines like Paris Match and Lifeand his images were distributed byMagnum.
Güler photographs are very diverse.Sometimes pure photojournalism, otherscapturing archeological digs or portraits ofartists. And, of course, Istanbul.
ParisGlobe will exhibit 25 vintage prints ofphotographs taken in the 1960's inAphrodisias, Bursa, Efes and Istanbul.
Ara Güler has never stopped publishingand showing his photographs. In 2007, he provided the photographs forthe book by Nobel Prize author OrhanPamuk called Istanbul, Memories of a City.
People will be able to view Ara Güler pho-tographs during the upcoming TurkishSeason in France, in particular at theMaison Européenne de la Photographie andat ParisGlobe.
The Turkish photographer Ara Güler is the next photographer to be featured atParisGlobe with twenty five vintage prints dating from the 1960's.
Ara Güler's favorite subject is people, follo-wed by Turkey, his native land.
In 1962 he photographed the rediscoveryand rebirth of Aphrodisias, a small ancientcity in Asia Minor.
His images show objects from daily life inthe 1960's side by side with Romancolumns and statues.

Life is harder in Istanbul: women in a sweatshop looking out at nothing; a man oncrutches on the cobbled streets of Eyup.
The way in which Ara Güler looks at people and how he treats light creates anintimate relationship between us and hissubjects
Güler's black and white images have littleto do with exoticism. He gives us a tender, tough and diverse view of Turkey in the1960's.
