AQUATICS CORPORATE PROFILE
2019
CORPORATE PROFILE 2019 | PAGE 2
ARGO® is a multidisciplinary professional practice which provides
services in Architecture. Masterplanning, Engineering (Structural and
Civil), Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Project
Management. Our experience spans continuously the last 36 years as a
professional practice. Will Marcus, Principal and Managing Director of
Argo is the founder, heading up a small but highly specialised team of
architects, engineers and project managers who have been responsible
for a significant number of projects across the globe including over 2,700
aquatic projects.
Argo’s sister company Globe Architektur, registered in Germany is also
an architectural and structural engineering practice. Globe was seeded
by Thomas Bauer of Argo in 2006 and is closely associated with Argo’s
Brisbane office providing invaluable technical and manpower support in
relation to larger and more complex project works.
Argo is recognised as a leading innovator in architectural design and
master planning, having designed projects that have won significant
international and Australian awards for design excellence and
environmental sustainability. Argo’s design innovations include the
world’s first moving Olympic pool floor operating with cable/sheave
systems, the world’s first composite plastic moving Olympic Pool
bulkhead, innovation in water slide design, the world’s fastest starting
block for Anti Wave International (so fast that it was prevented from
being used at the 2000 Olympic Games by the US team,),interactive
water play equipment, recognition as holding the intellectual property
for creating the fasted Olympic and Short Course Olympic pools in the
world and for creating and developing the beach edge profile for
domestic, sports and leisure pools. These innovations are now industry
standards.
Argo’s experience stemmed from Will Marcus’s start in swimming pool
construction with his father in 1977, where Will learnt the trades
associated with pool construction, progressing through project
management, sales and marketing and finally directorship duties. This
start in aquatics lead to Will’s eventual involvement with Aquatic
Centres, Olympic facilities and Water Theme parks.

Argo’s international experience covering 19 countries and domestic
experience of over 2,700 aquatic projects ensures that Argo is fully
capable of delivering project outcomes anywhere in the world and to
world’s best practice. By working closely with our clients, cross-fertilizing
concepts between cultures and countries, Argo has been able to create
significant innovation in aquatic and leisure projects. Innovations that
have significantly improved commercial return to clients and created
memorable experiences for end users.
Each new project creates its own special opportunities for innovation
and creativity in its design and operation. These are discussed with
clients early in the design process and implemented if proven practical
and affordable to manage.
As a professional service provider, Argo employs a highly skilled and
specialised team of professionals to deliver outcomes. ARGO’s cohesive
methodology for delivering services has been developed over the
decades to ensure that the best possible project solution is discovered
and constructed. Argo’s prior experience in managing aquatic facilities
allows masterplanning and architectural design that responds well to
facility operational issues and optimises return on capital expenditure; in
part achieved by minimising staffing requirements through clever site
planning and other operational efficiencies.
Argo’s continuing involvement with clients over many years, (in some
instances the relationships are approaching 20 years) is testament to our
commitment to quality service through clear communication.

operating within diverse cultures and remote locales. We have
developed an understanding of the significant cultural differences within
Australian society as a consequence and can cater effectively to
demographic needs throughout many markets, especially in South East

Argo is also well placed by having sister offices in England and Germany.
The expertise gained on major offshore projects being readily accessible
to Australian projects and vise versa.

Ring Pty Ltd; Regional representative for Bion Energy (UK) and more
recently, Will has been appointed Chairman of Rock Against Adversity in

Argo provides professional services using CAD platforms which are
effective and relevant to our clients. Argo is able to blend traditional
architectural projections and latest computer generated presentations
including immersive technology, to explain projects in the most clear
and effective ways for clients and contractors.
Our standard platform is 3D REVIT and ARCHICAD. We have BIM
capacity and seek to implement this technology where appropriate to
ensure clear coordination between the design and documentation
team and the contractors on site. Argo also uses Allplan by
Nemetzchek, a sophisticated 3D building software CAD package
typically used in Europe and North America. We couple LUMION to the
CAD software to generate high resolution animations, renders and
immersed environments.
QUALITY SERVICE DELIVERY
Key to Argo’s capacity is our capacity to listen. We hear our clients’
needs and deliver them with improvements and innovation that is a
hallmark of our engagement. This quality of interaction with our clients
ensures that we deliver outcomes, which are beneficial to our clients
and in most cases (due to the public nature of aquatics), to
communities. Our practice is certified by ISO-9001, we observe a triple
check quality assurance system for design and document delivery and
Argo embraces the ‘continual improvement’ method of operation,
where every project experience is analysed for opportunities to improve.
QUALITY SITES
Sites of high caliber are rare and Argo wastes no opportunity for
developing projects on special sites so they distinguish themselves.

5.0 SOFTWARE AND DELIVERY

Examples of this are Wetside on Hervey Bay’s foreshore in Piabla, Coolum
Beach Christian College, Sunshine Coast QLD and Nilai Memorial Park in
Negeri Sembilan in Malaysia.
QUALITY MATERIAL SELECTION
The volume of usage a facility experiences and the subsequent heavy
wear to which the built surfaces will be exposed requires careful material
selections to ensure that true value in not displaced by capital cost
economy. A value engineering approach to this type of facility is of
particular importance.
QUALITY ENVIRONMENT
The general public is now very aware of the natural environment and its
importance in our built environment. Sustainability now has more
meaning for most people and we believe that architectural and
engineering design must address these issues carefully. Argo’s
commitment to the environment is part of our quality approach to
project delivery and can be exampled through the Sunshine Coast
Regional Stadium which is highly awarded for its innovation in and high
level of environmental design and Wetside at Hervey Bay, which similarly
won several state awards for its environmental design breakthroughs.
QUALITY DETAILING
Some environments are aggressive, such as coastal land with corrosive
salt spray, pool halls with high humidity and chemical content and urban
sites with acid rain and other pollutants from traffic and industry. Such
environments require careful detailing and material selection to ensure
longevity and low maintenance in the fabric of the buildings and
structures.
