AQUATIC CARBON BIOGEOCHEMISTRY OF COASTAL TEMPERATE RAINFORESTS WORKSHOP FEBRUARY 8-10, 2017 Page 1 of 9 Participants (Steering Committee in Blue) Interests and Expertise Workshop Expectations Simone Alin NOAA, Pacific Marine Environmental Lab [email protected] 206-526-6819 I am a chemical oceanographer at NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. My research focuses on coastal carbon cycling and ocean acidification in the California Current System and Salish Sea/Puget Sound. I was a regional leader for the North American Coastal Carbon Synthesis (CCARS) effort, which included land-ocean linkages as one of the key fluxes of interest. As such, and because the Olympic Coast and Salish Sea are areas near and dear to me, I am interested in making connections and possible paper collaborations arising out of this workshop. Megan Behnke Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center University of Alaska Southeast [email protected] 907-957-2738 I run stream sampling and water analysis at the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center, and work to keep data loggers logging successfully around the Juneau area. During my undergraduate years, I studied the photochemical and microbial breakdown of dissolved organic carbon in small tundra and permafrost thaw streams in Siberia with the Woods Hole Research Center, and investigated glacial iron bioavailability at WHOI. I hope to gain practical skills in DOC analysis, and to further narrow in on current opportunities in temperate rainforest biogeochemistry for my upcoming graduate study. Allison Bidlack Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center University of Alaska Southeast [email protected] 907-796-6269 I am an ecologist with a general interest in the coastal rainforests of the North Pacific. My objective is to foster collaborative research in this ecoregion; increase funding and visibility for basic and applied research; and provide science-based information relevant to community decision-making. I am interested in solidifying a research network focused on coastal margins processes across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. This network will facilitate and enable integrative, transformative work in the face of ecosystem change and funding challenges. Sarah Bisbing Cal Poly [email protected] 970-449-3606 I am a forest ecologist who works at the intersection of theoretical ecology and forest management to understand how species’ adaptations and ecosystem response to disturbance shape community structure, ecosystem function, and long-term stand dynamics. Research in my lab works to 1) identify species’ threshold of tolerance to past, current, and future conditions, and 2) assess impacts of altered abiotic and biotic conditions (via climate change and both natural, and anthropogenic disturbances) on conifer regeneration and community composition. I collaborate widely across disciplines to generate community, ecosystem, and landscape level findings that go beyond field-specific application and produce integrated, cross- disciplinary management and conservation efforts. I look forward to expanding our community of coastal temperate rainforest researchers and networking across disciplines to identify knowledge gaps, future studies, and a strong, collaborative, interdisciplinary network.
