Pond Kits vs. Pond PartsA POND IS MADE UP OF MANY DIFFERENT PARTS AND WHEN THOSE PARTS ARE ASSEMBLED TOGETHER CORRECTLY, THEY FORM A BEAUTIFUL AND NATURALISTIC WORK OF ART THAT CHANGES PERSONALITY WITH THE TIME OF DAY, THE CHANGE OF THE SEASONS, AND THE MOODS OF MOTHER NATURE.

Until you’ve assembled them, they’re just a bunch of unrelated parts, without continuity, without function, and without aesthetic appeal.

As a water feature designer and installer you can buy pond parts separately. If you shop around, you’ll find that some manufacturers sell certain parts for less money than other manufacturers. So on the surface, it’s possible to save money if you shop around and buy your parts from a variety of different manufacturers. But that’s only at

first glance.

If you’re willing to take a second, third, or even a fourth glance, you’ll get an entirely different perspective on the right way to buy products for a pond.

THE PARTS MUST WORK TOGETHERIt’s essential to recognize that those parts must be built so they all fit together and work together in harmony as a unit and as a team. If they don’t, you’ve got problems that can add up to headaches. When you buy all the pond parts from the same manufacturer in the form of a kit, not only are you assured that all the parts are built to work together, but if you have questions or need assistance in the future, you’ll have only one owner’s manual to refer to and one manufacturer to deal with.

By buying from one manufacturer, you’re essentially making a volume purchase. The pond kit pricing will likely result in similar savings from the savings you gained by price-shopping all the parts separately. When you consider all the time you wasted by shopping around, comparing prices of this part and that part and coordinating it all, you’re probably losing money, right? If you can find the right place to get all the right parts (in kit form), delivered at the right time, that’s what some folks call “one-stop shopping.” That’s what others call “efficient.” What do you call it?

WHAT IF IT WERE A NEW CAR?Think of it this way. Next time you go out to buy a new car, are you going to buy the engine, brakes, transmission, and body all from four separate dealers? If you did, would you then expect to be able to assemble it in your garage? Do you think it would actually work?

If you still insist on buying your products for your water feature design part by part, at least buy all the parts from the same manufacturer. Just like with cars, avoid buying one part from Ford, the other from GM, and the other from Honda or you’ll never make it out of the water gardening driveway.

The Aquascape Ecosystem

CIRCULATION SYSTEM is really just a fancy way of saying “pumps and plumbing.” An efficient circulation system keeps the water moving and provides the necessary oxygen levels needed to keep healthy fish and plants.

PROPER FILTRATION SYSTEM includes the use of both a biological and a mechanical filter. A biological filter provides surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and remove excess nutrients from the water. A mechanical filter will not only pre-filter the water and house the pump; it will also skim debris from the water’s surface to prevent the accumulation of organic materials on the bottom of the pond.

FISH are an integral part of any ecosystem. Fish will actually reduce pond maintenance, as they graze on string algae and bottom feed from the pond bottom.

AQUATIC PLANTS are Mother Nature’s true filters. Plants are great for adding character to a pond by providing color and texture, but from a filtration

Best Efficiency Point ChartFrom the smallest to the largest, the laws of hydraulics apply to all centrifugal pumps. The lowest operating costs and the longest pump and motor life will be obtained if the pump is applied properly. Just as you wouldn’t buy an automobile according to the maximum speed listed on the speedometer, buying a pump according to maximum GPH should also be avoided. It is important to understand that all pumps have an operating point where the best energy efficiency and the best life expectancy will be achieved, also known as the BEP (Best Efficiency Point).

BEP (Best Efficiency Point) = The point on a pump performance chart at which the flow is the smoothest (low vibration) and where the pump achieves the performance it is designed to meet. See dark blue bands in chart below:

How to use chart:The chart below contains the information you need to select the pump that best fits your water feature application.

1. Determine the flow requirements you wish to achieve. We typically recommend between 1,000 – 3,000 GPH per foot of spillway width for residential waterfalls.2. Determine the total head, in feet, for the project. This is a combination of vertical lift from the surface of the pond plus friction losses in the pipe (rule of thumb: add 1 foot for every 10 feet of pipe length).3. Choose the pump from the chart below, or the following pump pages, that meets your flow requirements and falls as close as possible within the best operating range of the pump.

Downspout FilterA successful rainwater harvesting project relies on properly pre-filtering the rainwater before it enters the storage reservoir.

First Stage in Properly Filtering Rainwater• - The Downspout Filter is installed at the base of the downspout ready to capture and remove a variety of debris that may be flushed into the system during a rain event. Incoming rainwater is passed through a series of mechanical filters that remove leaves, twigs, seeds, and small sediment that accumulate on the surface of the roof between rain events.
