Aptis: a new, 100% electric experience of mobility National policies in Europe are encouraging the switch from diesel buses to vehicles that use clean energy. Demand for emission-free transport is growing. Demographic projections show that the global population is expected to reach 9.7 billion people by 2050, with 70% living in urban areas. With annual global urban transport emissions expected to double to nearly one billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2025, public authorities are more concerned than ever about the environmental impact of transportation. Alstom and NTL are already supporting the transition to sustainable transport systems by designing and delivering innovative, environmentally friendly, efficient and appealing rail solutions. The two companies have decided to launch a new type of vehicle to complete their emission-free, 100% electric portfolio: Aptis. Aptis is designed to offer cities a clean and efficient transport system solution. Based on Alstom and NTL’s expertise in vehicles on tyres, axles, motors and traction systems, Aptis incorporates the advantages of a tram to enhance both passenger experience and operation. This is the first time for both companies to diversify into a non-rail product and will complement their range of solutions to provide customers with an entire range of electric, and therefore clean, urban transportation.

The electrical bus market Electrical buses will play a key role in urban transport over the next 10 to 20 years as one of the solutions to replace diesel powered buses. Many countries and cities have already launched projects to replace their fleets. By 2035, most European cities should have electric buses running in their networks.

The Ile de France region will be the market targeted first, as it is expected to grow significantly in the coming years with the objective of replacing 80% of its fleet of buses. In France, the STIF has decided to launch two trials, one of which with the RATP. Aptis will undergo test runs in Paris in the Ile de France region during the second half of 2017. Other cities in France also intend to acquire electric bus fleets and have shown an interest in Aptis. In Europe, Alstom and NTL intend to target the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Spain, markets that are leading the way in electric mobility solutions.

Aptis, a new urban mobility experience Aptis is a new mobility solution. It provides cities with a vehicle that is 100% electric as well as the entire system including dimensioning, charging options, road infrastructure, leasing and warranty options. A unique passenger experience
Aptis’ unique and innovative design is inspired by the tram, incorporating low-floor accessibility and 360° views. With batteries and power systems located on the roof and the wheels situated at both ends with no overhangs, Aptis offers passengers the utterly novel concept of a 20 m2 fully low floor. The double doors, also derived from tram design, allow for easy on-off passenger flows as well as smooth access for wheelchairs and strollers. With panoramic windows at both ends, Aptis offers 20% more window surfaces than buses as well as low noise levels.
An optimised vehicle for the operator
With four steerable wheels, versus only two in buses, Aptis occupies 25% less surface area in curves. This insertion performance brings benefits at bus stops by minimising the space needed to park and offering gains in available space for other vehicles. Aptis aligns perfectly with the pavement to allow wheelchair users and passengers with strollers to board easily, thus reducing stopping times at stations. Aptis has a flexible interior layout, offering configurations to suit the operator’s needs: a lounge at the back, two or three double doors on both sides and a customised interior design which can easily evolve with the life cycle. Seats can be easily added or removed according to the requirements of the city or the line. The total cost of ownership has been optimised thanks to easier, and therefore reduced, maintenance: Aptis has four tyres instead of six for buses, there is an air-cooling system for the motor instead of traditional water-cooling and all components

are more accessible as they are located on the roof. The interior has been designed for easier cleaning and the interior elements can be changed at every stage of product life. Operating costs are also lower thanks to the electric energy resources, a higher passenger capacity, a high exchange rate, energy optimisation and a longer lifetime of around 20 years. Aptis has strong and reliable traction, inspired by Alstom’s Citadis tram range with permanent magnet motors and a longer lifetime. Alstom and NTL are working on various innovative ways of selling Aptis. Some customers may wish to buy only the vehicle, while others may prefer a bundle offer with maintenance. The two companies are working with investors and leasing companies to develop an offer targeting operators who do not own their vehicles, or own only the car body and not the batteries. Alstom is also developing a global system proposal. The charging system
Aptis can be charged in two different ways. The first mode involves bringing enough energy on board to have sufficient autonomy for a full day of operation, then recharging the batteries in the depot overnight using a standard plug (it takes around 6 hours to fully recharge the batteries). The other solution may be either Alstom’s SRS solution or an inverted pantograph, which takes around 5 minutes to recharge, equivalent to a
quick drivers’ break. When installed on Aptis, SRS provides the opportunity to charge the vehicle each time it reaches the end of the line instead of just in the depot at night. Thus, fewer batteries are needed on the version with SRS. SRS also has other advantages: - A higher level of service with fewer batteries, leaving more space on the roof to install air conditioning systems, - Better integration into the existing bus network: no need to install charging systems to charge all the vehicles overnight in the depot, - Smaller impact on the grid: if all vehicles are charged in the same place overnight, installation of specific substations is required.
