since taking to the road in january 2013 with her husband, Wax & Words is an ever-evolving and growing collection of words and textures in wax. demonstrating the ancient art of encaustic (painting with beeswax and coloured pigments) Wax & Words is not to be missed.

a combined photographic and audio composition that examines bundaberg north through bundaberg resident brad marsellos lens and heinz riegler’s audio score. sometimes we have to look to the past to move forward.

LitErary notions: triFFids aLison mCdonaLd Continuing untiL 27 aPriL: thE vauLt

mcdonald’s triffids are ficticious, exotic and coloured overgrown-looking plants that derive from single use plastics. these triffids have taken over the vault space as part of the Literary notions series and were created in response to the 1951 novel, day of the triffids by john Wyndham.

PoRtRAIts of A tEA Cosy

Portraits of a tea Cosy is a tribute to all those who make and give tea cosies to their loved ones. it is an ode to the taking of tea, the making of friends and the keeping of memories.

it is a celebration of family and history and cultures - so much wrapped up and kept warm in a little old tea cosy.

this exhibition is the culmination of a two year journey initiated by yarn artist Loani Prior, aka Queen of tea Cosies, and professional brisbane-based photographer mark Crocker. in this exhibition, the tea cosy is a catalyst for dialogue on the joy of owning something handmade and family tradition. Participants in the photographic component of the exhibition are from Warwick, miles, hervey bay, brisbane, mittagong & melbourne and as is revealed through the interviews captured and played in the gallery space as part of the exhibition - the humble tea cosy is a vessel that evokes nostalgic memories and a deep familial love.

take a walk through gallery two and view over 20 different hand crafted tea cosies by Loani Prior and their teapots, alongside images by mark Crocker of individuals with their beloved tea cosies.

the bundaberg blanket buddies are a large group of regular knitters who knit solely for charity purposes. they have most recently knitted blankets for those in need following recent natural disasters such as the tasmanian bushfires and bundaberg floods. you can join their knitting circle throughout the duration of the Portraits of a tea Cosy exhibition.

the blanket buddies rely on donations to keep their yarn supplies up. they are seeking donations of 8 ply wool and you can drop your stash or stock off to both brag and Charts for the duration of the exhibition.

WhEN: Wednesday 2 april, Wednesday 16 april and Wednesday 21 may tImE: 10 to 12 noon Cost: Free to attend, bring your yarn and knitting needles if you have them or just join in the conversation. Light refreshments provided.

PoRtRAIts of A tEA Cosy foR kIds

never knitted before? Come along to this workshop and learn a new art form or build on your skills. Children will learn how to do French knitting, also known as tomboy knitting or Corking! using simple materials of cardboard tubes and paddle pop sticks as their spool, children will be shown how to wind the wool around the tube to create an interesting shape.

this is a great activity to learn the basic principles of traditional knitting with our volunteer guides and expert tutor jennifer nuebecker on hand to assist participants.

a variety of items will be made on the day using this technique such as bracelets, necklaces, socks, hats, abstract shapes and more.

Books As ARt: 30 yEARs IN thE mAkINg

bundaberg-based artist Catherine mcCue boes will show a retrospective of 30 years of producing handmade artist books that cover a wide range of inspirational points such as literature, poetry, stories, science, travel, environment and biography. often produced as small editions or as unique. these works are often narrative driven, others whimsical and playful and some are dark and moody.

Forty plus handmade artist books will be on display, alongside selected images from within the pages of the books. in addition a selection of artists books from Catherine’s private collection will be displayed.

LItERARy NotIoNs: fINtAN mAgEE

Fintan magee will be painting directly onto the walls of the vault space to create a large scale mural in response to sebastian barry’s novel ‘Long Long Way’. this highly acclaimed novel from 2005 charts the experience of a young man caught between the great War in Europe and the war that is festering in his irish homeland. magee’s own heritage is part of the reason the novel is so appealing and inspirational for him. his father is from northern ireland, where large scale political murals are prolific and a part of the urban landscape. their influence on magee is unsurprising given he has been visiting ireland since he was five years old.

imPressed is the culmination of printed works by 25 Wide bay printmakers from hervey bay, gympie, Fraser Coast, bundaberg and mount Perry. this group exhibition showcases the wide variety, diversity and techniques used to interpret features of the Fraser Coast and surrounding hinterland.

different techniques such as solar plate, etching, lino, woodblock, screen printing and more will be showcased through a wide variety of original artists’ prints made by hand and by this diverse group of artists.

as part of the exhibition – a display of tools and equipment used by the printmakers to demonstrate the process of creation will help aid viewers in understanding these unique and highly skilled medium.

to coincide with the major milestone exhibition by Cai guo-Qiang “ Falling back to Earth” at the Queensland gallery of modern art (goma), brag & Charts will host the regionally touring kids program linked to the exhibition.

as part of activities held at brag children and families will be able to learn about

the artists exciting working methods, participate and display objects and create multimedia gunpowder and firework drawings through interactive tablet applications.

as part of the kids on tour activities children will be able to make their own bamboo bridge crossing with pieces of bamboo and masking tape inspired by blue dragon and bridge crossing 1999 and create their own boats, animals and trees with supplied templates inspired by Cai’s artwork heritage 2013.

also as part of the kids on tour activities, Let’s Create an exhibition with a boy named Cai allows children and families to follow Cai guo-Qiang’s artistic journey across the world exploring his inspiration, travels and techniques.

this is a free program to regional communities provided by the Queensland art gallery’s regional services department.

mEEt thE mAkER: JAN ARNoLd

jan arnold is a talented craft maker and knitter extraordinaire, having learnt her craft at primary school in young, new south Wales. this skill has become a life-long passion.

jan not only creates tea cosies and other novelties, but also knits toys, trauma bears, plates of “food”, and covered coat hangers. the trauma bears are taken to hospitals and the blood bank by the red Cross as a comfort for children who are unwell.

With the revival of knitting as an art form and the interest in tea cosies, jan is hopeful that young people will learn the skill which will develop into a life-long love.

Come and watch jan creating her wonderful tea cosies, and have the opportunity to purchase a unique tea cosy and other knitted goods by jan at our special meet the maker gift shop event.

Cooper and spowart work in the early evening’s nocturnal light, a time of day where the afterglow of sunset and the glow of streetlights transform the everyday experience of place.

Creating photographs is only the beginning of the nocturne Project’s activity. after capture the artists select and optimise images that are then posted on social media sites like Facebook. in this online space each community is invited to share their stories or experiences that are connected with the places photographed. this exhibition will include images that Cooper & spowart have captured in bundaberg, Childers, musswellbrook and grafton.

round pots/square holes, square pots/round holes, this exhibition will investigate the properties of opposites and how things that initially seem incompatible may be adapted to complement each other. starting with squares and circles each element may be explored separately or in combination.

both individually created and combined group pieces will be showcased as part of this ceramic exhibition, with a full range of different firing, glazing and pottery techniques on show by some of the region’s most well-known and loved local potters.

victoria Cooper and doug spowart are artists who work collaboratively to investigate themes, both personal and political, about the representation of ‘site’ and ‘place’ in the australian natural and urban landscape. their artworks not only connect with contemporary social issues but are also informed by historical, scientific and mythological insights intrinsic to each site.

While working ‘on site’ Cooper and spowart utilise and extend the concept of the documentary photographic methodology, to include: community involvement, social media platforms, nocturne light, projections and the camera

obscura. their work is resolved as visual narratives in exhibitions, artists books or photobooks and online platforms like Facebook and blogs.

Fintan magee is a brisbane-based street artist whose artwork is currently taking him all over the world. With a growing reputation for painterly, large-scale imaginative murals, magee has enlivened spaces in buenos aires, miami, La, jakarta, hong kong, vienna, London, dublin, Columbia, brisbane, sydney and melbourne to name a few. he has also exhibited his work in gallery exhibitions and installations throughout australia and was recently featured in the 7th asia Pacific triennial of contemporary art at the Queensland art gallery in 2012 - 13.

the national gallery of australia in collaboration with the bundaberg regional galleries (brag & Charts) and alzheimer’s australia will present a specialised workshop bringing together staff of the gallery, local health care providers and other interested parties to establish a program of gallery art tours for people living with dementia in the bundaberg region.

a program of gallery tours provides people living with dementia an opportunity to connect with the world in enriching and life-enhancing ways. a discussion based tour of works of art provides intellectual stimulation and social inclusion which improves the quality of life for people living with dementia.

the training workshop is run by educators involved in running the art and alzheimer’s Program at the national gallery of australia. the workshop will draw on the knowledge and expertise of the attendees and fosters the necessary partnerships to build a sustainable program in the bundaberg regional galleries.

our galleries hardworking and enthusiastic volunteers put in over 2,500 hours in 2013!

our volunteers work in many roles – they are the smiling faces that greet you when you walk into the gallery, they are the people who pour your wine and serve you nibblies at the exhibition openings. they are always there to help out at the children’s workshops and behind closed doors they are there demounting and installing our exhibitions. they even

cover and maintain the books in our “library”.

the galleries volunteers come from all walks of life, ranging in age from 17 to 87, but all share a common love of art, which has led to the formation of the brag trade – an art group whose members are all brag volunteers.

We are very grateful to all our volunteers and thank each of them for their valuable contribution to both brag & Charts.
