April, May, & June 2016 Newsletter President’s Message:

Greetings and Happy Spring,

I hope that this newsletter finds you all healthy and happy and enjoying time in your

garden. It has been a magnificent spring so far!

2016 has been a busy, productive year at our center. In January, we had our first

'Carnival de Albuquerque', a Mardi Gras Gala with food, fun and dancing. We had a

great team of dedicated volunteers who helped to design, decorate and stage the entire

event. Roger Burns Entertainment generously donated their musical talent and was the

highlight of the evening! February saw our annual Rummage Sale with over 40

volunteers, many of whom volunteered each day for set-up, pricing, sales and tear down.

March has been busy with floor renovations and other interior changes, especially our

renovated Garden Shop. Our gardens are coming alive as we speak, where we recently

hosted a well attended workday in the gardens. We had a great showing of Master

Gardeners and several of our other member clubs were represented.

April will be here before we know it, and the AGC schedule is packed with a

Cactus/Succulent Show and Council's Annual Flower Show - with a fabulous Beatle's

theme this year. Many are looking forward to our Spring Fair Plant Sale. In May, you

may enjoy The Orchid Guild Show, an Iris/Aril Show, a Rose Show and the National

Convention and African Violet Show! June brings our organization great exposure

with an Ikebana Floral Arts Workshop, our Garden Tour, followed a week later with

"Friends in the Garden" and a Daylily Show.

Center or most nurseries From traditional to whimsical, from classic to

contemporary, the gardens of Twin Parks and Altura Park

are featured this year. Presented by the Council of

Albuquerque Garden Clubs, this Annual Garden Tour has

many designed by noted local architects and designers.

The neighborhoods known today as Altura Park

and Twin Parks have custom built homes that began

development in the mid-1950s with recent ones built in

the early 2000s. The parks are the hub of the

neighborhoods which lie across Constitution from each

other. Twin Parks and the west side of Altura Park with

their wide-open grassy areas are used for soccer and other

sports. There are also two tennis courts and a children’s

playground in Altura Park.

A number of the original homes have been re-

landscaped over the past 60 years and reflect the maturity

of decades of large tree growth along with the

incorporation of contemporary water-wise landscaping.

There will be plenty of parking around the two

parks, and reasonably fit people will be able to walk to all

the gardens while enjoying the stroll through the

neighborhoods. Several of the Gardens are enhanced with

live music wafting through the air.

A Garden Lunch including drink and dessert will

be available at Garden # 7 for $15. The Garden Artists’

Art Show is also located there. Tour tickets are $15 and a

combo tour and lunch ticket is $25

Club News:

Albuquerque Daylily Society: The Albuquerque Daylily Society has been anxiously

awaiting the arrival of Spring and the growth of our

beloved Hemerocallis , both new and old! The executive

committee has been hard at work planning ADS 2016

events. We are looking forward to another great year!

In April, we will be meeting at the Pittman residence,

where photographer and member Art Bova will speak

about photographing our flowers to look their best. ADS

will also be participating in the Council Garden Fair and

Plant Sale on April 29th and 30th and will have hardy

bareroot cultivars available for purchase.

May’s schedule involves getting our plants ready for

bloom season and a meeting at Mimi Glover’s home,

where we will have a program by Barbara Shapiro,

regarding the daylily’s trend into varying unusual forms.

June is always the highlight of our season, with bloom

beginning and our annual Daylily Show and Summer Sale,

held this year on Sunday, June 26th from 14pm. As

always, it is a labor of love and always enjoyable to share

our passion with the public! We will also have a meeting

at the Tuffnell home where we exchange valuable

information about plant grooming and design in

preparation for the show.

As always, we welcome new members! For more

information, email Amy Howard at

[email protected] . Happy Gardening!

Cactus & Succulent Society of New Mexico: The Cactus and Succulent Society of New Mexico will be

holding its annual spring plant show and sale on Saturday,

April 9 and Sunday, April 10, 2016. The location will be

the Albuquerque Garden Center at 10120 Lomas Blvd.,

NE, from 10 AM until 4 PM each day. There is no

admission charge.

The show will display several hundred plants,

including some of the finest specimens from many

different private collections in our region, including many

of our society's members. However, you do not need to be

a member to exhibit plants. Please bring your very best

cacti and succulents to be exhibited at this show. Entries

are accepted at the Albuquerque Garden Center on Friday,

April 8, from 1 PM to 8 PM. Helpful information on

entering your own plants can be found at a particular link

off the society's main website, accessed via:

http://www.new-mexico.cactus-

society.org/cdocs/Presenting Plants for Show--Rev 11-

13.pdf or contact Daniel Finley via [email protected] or

use before you arrive, if you desire, from the following

website: http://www.new-mexico.cactus-

In addition to the judged show, the society's

annual sale brings in vendors from various places, and

puts forward a wide variety of cacti and other succulent

plants available for purchase, which range from bargain

starter plants to spectacular specimens. The nicest

specimen plants will be sold via a silent auction, which

will be done at least once each day. Bidders are urged to

be present at the close of bidding to purchase the plants.

An additional special feature of the sale is a selection of

some locally grown, hardy species for the yard---at least in

Albuquerque, and, sometimes, further north.
