The Three R’s:
Making a Difference in Today’s World
Back when I was growing up, we were told that the foundation of education was the Three R’s: Read-ing, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic (perhaps spelling should have had higher priority, as well). That’s all it will take for kids to be able to make a difference in the world. A few years later, we learned a new set of three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Again, having an impact on our world required us to attend to this new set of three R’s.
In April, as we move beyond the joy of the Resurrection and follow the mission of Christ to the ends of the earth, let us re-learn a new set of R’s: Relieve. Reverse. Refill. Together, these R’s will make an impact beyond our walls and beyond our generation. Let us join the disciples as we make a difference in our community and around the world.

Justice Matters would like to update you on a pressing issue--
Affordable Homes. Last year we asked city commissioners to
invest in a demonstration project to show how we, as a city,
could make sure people can afford to live in Lawrence. The city
accepted the challenge! And through a collaboration that in-
cludes Tenants to Homeowners, Habitat for Humanity, Family
Promise, the Willow Domestic Violence Shelter, and the city,
we will build three permanently affordable homes for women
and children fleeing domestic violence and others moving out
of homelessness. Over their lifetime, we can expect the project
(three new houses) to provide comfortable homes for up to
twenty-six families. This will demonstrate what can be accom-
plished by a cooperative effort and with the leveraging of a rel-
atively small amount of money, but it is only a drop in the
bucket. The need is great. So Justice Matters will be proposing
to city officials that they scale up this type of investment to fix
this long-standing and worsening problem. If this ministry is to
succeed in making Lawrence a more just community, we need
your help. Please make plans now to attend this year’s Nehe-
miah Assembly at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00), Wednes-
day, April 13, Lied Center. Together we are and will make a
difference—“let justice roll on like a [mighty] river” (Amos
5:24).

Wednesday Nights: ‘Telling Our Stories’
Last Wednesday, Evelyn Falen showed us all about the technological
possibilities of our organ. It was interesting and fun! This Wednes-
day, April 6, Tim Bonner will share a part of his faith story with us.
Tim will be starting at Central Baptist Theological Seminary for a
Doctor of Ministry degree this fall. He will share with us how God
has been working in his life as he came to that decision, and anything
else he feels led to share with us. We hope that you can come and
share in Tim's story, as we continue our series of "Telling our sto-
ries." Our Wednesday meal begins at 6:00 p.m. and Tim’s story
begins at 6:40 p.m.
