A Message from our Pastor

Dear Parishioners, Christ is risen! He is Risen indeed! This Second Sunday of Easter has had a variety names in its history. In the ancient Church, it was called Dominica in Albis, (the Sunday of the White). It was the day on which those who had been baptized at the Easter Vigil removed their white garments. So great was their joy that they wore these baptismal robes for the entire week. This Sunday also came to be known as “Low Sunday,” a designation common within the Anglican tradition. The origins of this phrase are more obscure. Perhaps the phrase was used in comparison with the previous Sunday, i.e., Easter. From the standpoint of ritual and ceremony, this second Sunday of Easter is quite low when compared to the high solemnity of Easter

Sunday itself. It may also have been given this name to describe the exclamation of the apostle Thomas when he saw the Risen Lord for the first time (which is the Gospel Reading for this day), “Lo and behold.” The Eastern churches of the Catholic faith refer to this as “Thomas Sunday” because the Gospel for this day narrates the account of Jesus’ appearance to the apostles in the absence of Thomas. When the other apostles relate the good news of the Lord’s resurrection to Thomas, he is doubtful until he sees with his own eyes.

In the Jubilee Year 2000, St. John Paul II gave this Second Sunday of Easter the designation, “Divine Mercy Sunday.” The Divine Mercy devotion is based on the private revelations of St. Faustina, a saint who was particularly dear to this Holy Father. On this day, the faithful may participate in a number of liturgical and devotional practices that focus on the boundless mercy that God, through Jesus, bestows upon humanity. And finally, this Sunday has also been called “The Eighth Day” in that it concludes the octave period that got attached to Easter as a way of extending its celebration. More symbolically, however, the notion of an “8th” day is apocalyptic and connotes a future reality that has made its inroads into the present. In other words, the 8th day evokes the idea of the new creation that has begun and that brings the former creation (which was accomplished in 7 days) to its highest fulfillment.

Thus the 8th marks a new order and the dawn of a new time, all of which have come about because of the resurrection of Christ. On this Sunday, we rejoice to welcome our second graders to the Table of the Lord for the first time as they receive Holy Communion. Next Sunday, the Third Sunday of Easter, we will welcome 6 adult candidates into full communion with the Catholic Church. Since all of them were previously baptized, they were not confirmed or given the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil as we have done in the past. Going forward, the regular practice in the Joliet Diocese will be to have only adults who

have never been baptized receive the three sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. This is to recognize the baptismal dignity of Christians from other denominations and thereby reserve the Easter Vigil for those who are truly converts to the Christian faith. Because of its salvific significance, the Church celebrates Easter for 50 days, until the feast of Pentecost. We need at least that amount of time to absorb much of what we celebrated during Holy Week and on Easter Sunday itself. The following sonnet by Edmund Spenser (c. 1552-99) may help us to unpack some of the meaning behind this greatest feast of the Liturgical Year and the Christian life.

Easter Most glorious Lord of Lyfe! that, on this day, Didst make Thy triumph over death and sin; And, having harrowd hell, didst bring away Captivity thence captive, us to win: This joyous day, deare Lord, with joy begin; And grant that we, for whom thou diddest dye, Being with Thy deare blood clene washt from sin, May live for ever in felicity!

And that Thy love we weighing worthily, May likewise love Thee for the same againe; And for Thy sake, that all lyke deare didst buy, With love may one another entertayne! So let us love, deare Love, lyke as we ought, —Love is the lesson which the Lord us taught.

Blessings,

St. Joan of Arc School

In addition to learning about Lent and Jesus' death and resurrection, PreK and Kindergarten also had an Easter Egg hunt and colored Easter eggs. We had a wonderful time learning and celebrating this blessed season!

Liturgical Volunteers Needed! We are looking for individuals to act as Mass coordinators, especially for the 4:00 p.m., 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. liturgies, to share the duties so that you would not be required to be present every week. We are also in need of individuals to help with cleansing vessels after the 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. liturgies. You do not have to currently be a liturgical minister in any capacity in order to volunteer for either Mass coordinator or vessel cleanser. If you are currently a liturgical minister, you can volunteer as well. We need you! Contact me at 630-353-4517 or [email protected] or when you see me at church. Cathy Lentz, Liturgy Coordinator

“When I see that the burden is beyond my strength, I do not consider or analyze it or probe into it, but I run like a child to the Heart of Jesus and say only one word to Him: ‘You can do all things.’ And then I keep silent, because I know that Jesus Himself will intervene in the matter, and as for me, instead of tormenting myself, I use that time to love Him.” (Diary of St. Faustina 1033, page 392)
