April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

“We, as a Church, have made a collective commit-

ment to the prevention of child abuse, across the

spectrum—physical, sexual, emotional, and even

spiritual,” offers Vicar General Msgr. W. Curtis Mal-

let, JCL, VG. … Preventing child abuse is about re-

specting the God-given dignity of each person, espe-

cially those who are most innocent and vulnerable.

Child abuse is an often hidden cancer which must be

cured by light and love. God’s grace follows those

who protect his little ones.”

To report Child Abuse, please call: 1-855-4LA-KIDS

(1-855-452-5437). If suspected abuse is related to a

diocesan/church/school program, please call the Di-

ocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator Sister Kath-

leen Farrelly, O. Carm, LSCW, SSWS at 337-398-

2987, as well as the vicar general at 337-261-5613 or

406 E. Pinhook Road. Recitation of the Rosary begins at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome to join in these prayers for vo-

cations and perseverance of vocations to the priesthood and

religious life, sponsored by the Serra Club of Lafayette.

Prayer for the Persecuted, Monday, May 18th

Join us on at St. Pius X, 6 - 7 pm, to pray for all of those in Syria and Iraq who have been mercilessly persecuted by

ISIS. Millions of our brothers and sisters have been forced

to flee their homes and lives due to violence. Many end up

in refugee camps, but even more seek shelter in abandoned and dilapidated buildings. Children are unable to go to

school and families are often without basic living essen-

tials. However, with God there is hope. Let us lift those who are suffering in prayer, where we know they will not

be forgotten, and pray that God will change the hearts of

those in ISIS. We will also learn from the Southeastern di-rector of Catholic Relief Services, Cullen Larson, how our

Church is changing lives in these regions in our name, and

the action we can take to ensure that this work continues.

From the Pastor’s Desk

What is our story? How did we come to be the Church we are today? Earlier this week I ran across this passage from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, from the Second Vatican Council. I find it speaks eloquently of all that God has accomplished in our midst, the mysteries we celebrate every Sunday:

“In his desire that all men should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, God spoke in former times to our forefathers through the prophets, on many occasions and in different ways. Then, in the fullness of time he sent his Son, the Word made man, anointed by the Holy Spirit, to bring good news to the poor, to heal the broken-hearted as the physician of body and spirit and the mediator between God and men. In the unity of the person of the Word, his human nature was the instrument of our salvation. Thus in Christ there has come to be the perfect atone-ment that reconciles us with God, and we have been given the power to offer the fullness of divine worship.

“This work of man’s redemption and God’s perfect glory was foreshadowed by God’s mighty deeds among the people of the Old Covenant. It was brought to fulfillment by Christ the Lord, especially through the paschal mystery of his blessed passion, resurrection from the dead and ascension in glory: by dying he destroyed our death, and by rising again he restored our life. From his side, as he lay asleep on the cross, was born that wonderful sacrament which is the Church in its entirety.

“As Christ was sent by the Father, so in his turn he sent the apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit. They were sent to preach the Gospel to every creature, proclaiming that we had been set free from the power of Satan and from death by the death and resurrection of God’s Son, and brought into the kingdom of the Father. They were sent also to bring into effect this saving work that they proclaimed, by means of the sacrifice and sacraments that are the pivot of the whole life of the liturgy.

“So, by baptism men are brought within the paschal mystery. Dead with Christ, buried with Christ, risen with Christ, they receive the Spirit that makes them God’s adopted children, crying out: Abba, Father; and so they become the true adorers that the Father seeks.

“In the same way, whenever they eat the supper of the Lord they proclaim his death until he comes. So, on the very day of Pentecost, on which the Church was manifested to the world, those who received the word of Peter were baptized. They remained steadfast in the teaching of the apostles and in the communion of the breaking of bread, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.”
