• Many Northerners wanted to ban slavery• Many Southerners wanted to keep slavery – Their economic system was dependent

remember!– Even antislavery Southerners didn’t like outsiders

interfering in their affairs

• Sectionalism developed. What is sectionalism?– An exaggerated loyalty to a particular region of

the country

• 11 free states, 11 slave states – If a new state was admitted, the balance in the

Senate would be upset. Why? Think back to the Constitution!

• Many settlers brought slaves with them when they traveled to Missouri

• WHEN MISSOURI APPLIED FOR STATEHOOD, ITS CONSTITUTION ALLOWED SLAVERY– What is the problem here?

Missouri Compromise• 1820• Missouri could join as a SLAVE state• Maine could join as a FREE state• 36-30 N latitude line in the Louisiana Purchase– North of the line would be free– South of the line would be slave

• Henry Clay (Speaker of the House) guided it through the House of Reps

• Temporarily resolved the debate over slavery

• 1844 presidential election (James Polk) was focused on the annexation of Texas – Texas allowed slavery and became a state in 1845– Why is this a problem?

• Mexican American War (1846-1848)– South wanted to take New Mexico and California from

Mexico– Wilmot Proviso: Ban slavery in all lands acquired from Mexico

• South was not happy-they believed that outlawing slavery in the territories endangered slavery EVERYWHERE

• Election of 1848– Zachary Taylor won from the Whig party

– BOTH candidates ignored the issue of slavery • This upset many Americans who abandoned their own

parties and formed new ones• Free Soil Party gained a few seats in Congress with the

slogan “Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Labor, and Free Men”

• 1849 California wanted to become a FREE state

• Antislavery forces wanted to ban slavery in Washington D.C.

• Southerners wanted national law to require states to return fugitive slaves

• Key issue: Upsetting the balance in the Senate

Compromise of 1850• Proposed by Henry Clay, but Stephan Douglas

proposed to vote on each part separately• California would enter as a free state• Texas’ borders were decided• All other territories would have no limit on slavery• Slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C.,

but current slaves would not be• Fugitive Slave Act was included to benefit the slave

state politicians
