Weekly Address on Gas Prices

Saturday, April 23, 2011

Washington, DC

This is a time of year when people get together with family and friends to observe Passover andto celebrate Easter. It¶s a chance to give thanks for our blessings and reaffirm our faith, whilespending time with the people we love. We all know how important that is ± especially in hardtimes. And that¶s what a lot of people are facing these days.

Even though the economy is growing again and we¶ve seen businesses adding jobs over the pastyear, many are still looking for work. And even if you haven¶t faced a job loss, it¶s still not easyout there. Your paycheck isn¶t getting bigger, while the cost of everything from college for your kids to gas for your car keeps rising. That¶s something on a lot of people¶s minds right now, with gas prices at $4 a gallon. It¶s just another burden when things were already pretty tough.

Now, whenever gas prices shoot up, like clockwork, you see politicians racing to the cameras, waving three-point plans for two dollar gas. You see people trying to grab headlines or score afew points. The truth is, there¶s no silver bullet that can bring down gas prices right away.

But there are a few things we can do. This includes safe and responsible production of oil athome, which we are pursuing. In fact, last year, American oil production reached its highestlevel since 2003. On Thursday, my Attorney General also launched a task force with just one

job: rooting out cases of fraud or manipulation in the oil markets that might affect gas prices, including any illegal activity by traders and speculators. We¶re going to make sure that no one istaking advantage of the American people for their own short-term gain. And another step weneed to take is to finally end the $4 billion in taxpayer subsidies we give to the oil and gascompanies each year. That¶s $4 billion of your money going to these companies when they¶re

making record profits and you¶re paying near record prices at the pump. It has to stop.

Instead of subsidizing yesterday¶s energy sources, we need to invest in tomorrow¶s. We need toinvest in clean, renewable energy. In the long term, that¶s the answer. That¶s the key to helpingfamilies at the pump and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. We can see that promisealready. Thanks to an historic agreement we secured with all the major auto companies, we¶reraising the fuel economy of cars and trucks in America, using hybrid technology and other advances. As a result, if you buy a new car in the next few years, the better gas mileage is goingto save you about $3,000 at the pump.

But we need to do more. We need to harness the potential I¶ve seen at promising start-ups and

innovative clean energy companies across America. And that¶s at the heart of a debate we¶rehaving right now in Washington about the budget.

Both Democrats and Republicans believe we need to reduce the deficit. That¶s where we agree. The question we¶re debating is how we do it. I¶ve proposed a balanced approach that cutsspending while still investing in things like education and clean energy that are so critical tocreating jobs and opportunities for the middle class. It¶s a simple idea: we need to live withinour means while at the same time investing in our future.

That¶s why I disagree so strongly with a proposal in Congress that cuts our investments in cleanenergy by 70 percent. Yes, we have to get rid of wasteful spending ± and make no mistake, we¶regoing through every line of the budget scouring for savings. But we can do that withoutsacrificing our future. We can do that while still investing in the technologies that will create jobs and allow the United States to lead the world in new industries. That¶s how we¶ll not onlyreduce the deficit, but also lower our dependence on foreign oil, grow the economy, and leavefor our children a safer planet. And that¶s what our mission has to be.

Thanks for listening, and have a great weekend.

We all know how important that is ± especially in hard times. And that¶s what a lot of peopleare facing these days.

Even though the economy is growing again and we¶ve seen businesses adding jobs over the past year, many are still looking for work .

Page 19: April 23, 2011 Word Assesment Phase a, B, C, D

And even if you haven¶t faced a job loss, it¶s still not easy out there.

Your paycheck isn¶t getting bigger, while the cost of everything from college for your kids togas for your car keeps rising.

That¶s something on a lot of people¶s minds right now, with gas prices at $4 a gallon. It¶s justanother burden when things were already pretty tough.

The Level is Even

Now, whenever gas prices shoot up, like clockwork, you see politicians racing to the cameras, waving three-point plans for two dollar gas.

You see people trying to grab headlines or score a few points. The truth is, there¶s no silver  bullet that can bring down gas prices right away.

But there are a few things we can do. This includes safe and responsible production of oil athome, which we are pursuing.

In fact, last year, American oil production reached its highest level since 2003. On Thursday,my Attorney General also launched a task force with just one job: rooting out cases of fraud or manipulation in the oil markets that might affect gas prices, including any illegal activity by traders and speculators.

Page 22: April 23, 2011 Word Assesment Phase a, B, C, D

We¶re going to make sure that no one is taking advantage of the American people for their ownshort-term gain.

And another step we need to take is to finally end the $4 billion in taxpayer subsidies we give tothe oil and gas companies each year. That¶s $4 billion of your money going to these companieswhen they¶re making record profits and you¶re paying near record prices at the pump. It has to

stop.

Instead of subsidizing yesterday¶s energy sources, we need to invest in tomorrow¶s. We need toinvest in clean, renewable energy. In the long term, that¶s the answer.

That¶s the key to helping families at the pump and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Wecan see that promise already. Thanks to an historic agreement we secured with all the major autocompanies, we¶re raising the fuel economy of cars and trucks in America, using hybridtechnology and other advances.

As a result, if you buy a new car in the next few years, the better gas mileage is going to saveyou about $3,000 at the pump.

But we need to do more. We need to harness the potential I¶ve seen at promising start-ups andinnovative clean energy companies across America. And that¶s at the heart of a debate we¶rehaving right now in Washington about the budget.

Page 25: April 23, 2011 Word Assesment Phase a, B, C, D

Both Democrats and Republicans believe we need to reduce the deficit. That¶s where we agree. The question we¶re debating is how we do it.

I¶ve proposed a balanced approach that cuts spending while still investing in things likeeducation and clean energy that are so critical to creating jobs and opportunities for the middleclass. It¶s a simple idea: we need to live within our means while at the same time investing inour future.

The Roman Republic first showed an inte rest in Iberia in the wake of the First Punic War.Iberia had long been the major source of mercenaries for the Carthaginian army, as well as

a source of natural resources. For a time Carthage controlled the southern part of the peninsula and Rome the upper part near the Pyrennees. The Second Punic War began over

a border dispute in Iberia, and in the wake of Rome¶s victory at Zama all of Iberia fellunder Roman sway. Unfortunately, the inhabitants, a mixture of Celts and local

populations, were fiercely independent and resisted Roman rule at every turn.

The First Celitiberian War was fought in the years 181±178 b.c. Roman forces under theleadership of Tiberius Gracchus subdued many of the tribes, and he developed a reputation

for fairness in dealing with his defeated enemies. Until 155 the region remained fairly

peaceful, as the Romans consolidated their hold on the coastal regions and the interior tribes recovered from the war. In 154 the Lusitani (of modern Portugal) attacked Romanterritory but in 151 they were defeated by the Roman Sulipicius Galba. He offered them

terms of surrender that they accepted; he then slaughtered 8,000 men who had given uptheir weapons. This act of treachery was unfortunately not uncommon, for most officials

sent to Spain had little desire to be there and faithlessness in their dealing with theCeltiberians was a regular practice.

Weekly Address on Gas Prices

Washington, DC

This is a time of year when people get together with family and friends to observe Passover andto celebrate Easter. It¶s a chance to give thanks for our blessings and reaffirm our faith, whilespending time with the people we love. We all know how important that is ± especially in hardtimes. It is impossible to ascertain whether or not the Amazon mythhad any substantial basis in reality. No archeological evidencehas been uncovered which would remotely suggest theexistence, in the Bronze Age or at any later time, of a community consisting entirely of female warriors; nor arethere any material remains or contemporary written records

which can conKNrm the notion that the myth preserves a

memory of a time when a matriarchal society in AsiaMinor was struggling for survival in the face of the growingpatriarchal dominance of the incoming Hittite peoples.

out there. Your paycheck isn¶t getting bigger, while the cost of everything from college for your kids to gas for your car keeps rising.

That¶s something on a lot of people¶s minds right now, with gas prices at $4 a gallon. It¶s justanother burden when things were already pretty tough.

In fact, last year, American oil production reached its highest

level since 2003. On Thursday, my Attorney General also launched a task force with just one job: rooting out cases of fraud or manipulation in the oil markets that might affect gas prices, including any illegal activity by traders and speculators.

We¶re going to make sure that no one is taking advantage of the American people for their ownshort-term gain. And another step we need to take is to finally end the $4 billion in taxpayer subsidies we give to the oil and gas companies each year. That¶s $4 billion of your money goingto these companies when they¶re making record profits and you¶re paying near record prices atthe pump. It has to stop.

This was in harvest. After this, in the same year,

before Martinmas, went King Edward to Buckingham with

his army, and sat there four weeks, during which

he built the two forts on either side of the water, ere

he departed thence. And Earl Thurkytel sought him for

his lord; and all the captains, and almost all the

first men that belonged to Bedford; and also many of

those that belonged to Northampton.

This year Ethelfleda, lady of the Mercians, with the

help of God, before Laminas, conquered the town called

Derby, with all that thereto belonged;

Instead of subsidizing yesterday¶s energy sources, we need to invest in tomorrow¶s. We need toinvest in clean, renewable energy. In the long term, that¶s the answer. That¶s the key to helpingfamilies at the pump and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

We can see that promise already. Thanks to an historic agreement we secured with all the major auto companies, we¶re raising the fuel economy of cars and trucks in America, using hybridtechnology and other advances. As a result, if you buy a new car in the next few years, the

better gas mileage is going to save you about $3,000 at the pump.

Sometimes I hear, mainly from far right speakers, that Rooseveltdeliberately caused the destruction of our fleet at Pearl Harbor. Ata lesser, and more probable level, I have heard that Secretary of War Stimson said we would be willing to sacrifice three cruisers toget into the war, but not five. This might be true, but neither Stimson nor Roosevelt wanted to lose our entire battle line for thatpurpose.

I beg you, at the same time, to do me the justice to be assured, that thisresolution has not been taken without a strict regard to all theconsiderations appertaining to the relation which binds a dutiful citizen tohis country; and that, in withdrawing the tender of service, which silencein my situation might imply, I am influenced by no diminution of zeal for your future interest; no deficiency of grateful respect for your pastkindness; but am supported by a full conviction that the step is

compatible with both.

Beginning with England before the war, anyone who was addictedcould get a certificate of addiction, and using it he could go to a doctor for drugs by prescription. The doctor was theoretically treating him with theintention of his eventually stopping drug consumption. The addict, however, could normally find a shady doctor who would simply give himas much as he wanted. The addict was a highly profitable patient sincehe paid his fee without putting the doctor to too much trouble.

But we need to do more. We need to harness the potential I¶ve seen at promising start-ups andinnovative clean energy companies across America. And that¶s at the heart of a debate we¶rehaving right now in Washington about the budget.

It¶s a simple idea: we need to live withinour means while at the same time investing in our future.

of protection against official prying in cases of taxes. A judgecan be inconvenienced by an aircraft hijacking or killed by abomb in the luggage compartment. Certainly, friends of the

defendant who brought guns into the courtroom would disturthe judge. In all of these cases, a search would reduce therisk.

In times of crisis or danger, Sabe often took the place of theQueen, while Amidala pretended to be a simple servant known asPadme Naberrie. Shortly after being elected Queen, she was

thrust into the galactic forefront during the rise to power of Senator Palpatine and the crisis with the Trade Federation. She showedwhy she had been elected during the conflict, standing tall againstthe Neimoidians and traveling to Coruscant to petition her case tothe Galactic Senate. However, political maneuvering was outside her scope, and she

often deferred to Palpatine¶s judgement.
